Forums - Gaming - The most disappointing game of this generation

From a broader perspective, maybe Diablo III. I don't think there are too many people who would call it a serious improvement over the second game in anything but visuals, which is pretty disappointing.

On a personal level...Skyward Sword. I keep coming back to that, but I rarely get hyped for games, and this one actually caught me up in it. When I finally got my chance to play, I was really let down.

I believe in honesty, civility, generosity, practicality, and impartiality.

I'm just going to underline FFXIII here.

Not only on it's own merits but it deserves as special place for spawning 2 un-needed and unwanted tacked-on sequels that actually took up an entire console generation.

It's the trainwreck you could barely make up.

Spore. I spent so many hours with the creature creator because it was amazing and that got me super hyped for the game which ended being a big pile of nothing.

Holy shit! I forgot all about that game!

I always wanted to play that

As someone who listed FF XIII in my first post here; I can't agree with this.  FF XIII-2 was a vast, vast improvement over the first game and hardly "tacked on" at all.

Xenoblade:

My hype was immense... colossal...and when I finally got a $70 copy I was pumped. Then I played it and loved it! Then I got to the big overworld. It all went downhill from there.

I tried to love it, I really did... I just couldn't.

Yoshi's Island DS:

Just ew. Ewwww.

Rayman Origins:

I managed to get caught in the hype and the reviews deceived me. It wasn't even a passable platformer.

Final Fantasy XIII.

One of the biggests turds i ever played. And im a fan of Jrpg's. For the time it ook to develop, for the build up it had, for how easy it would've been to make it enjoyable. They completely botched every part of the game.
They are trying to go the action/adventure route with FFXV, but while i dont hate that genre, i think they should go back to see what made the series so great on the playstation era and emulate that.

Prerequite:  Had to be somewhat hyped pre-release by the media, fanboys, etc

I would go with Mass Effect 3.  Without going into too much spoilers (although this is few years old and most know what happened), the ending retrospectively ruins Mass Effect 1 and 2.  All that hard work and meticuously decisions made thru the first 98% of the trilogy ruined by the ending.  The redone ending is "too little, too late".  You can't undo 1st impressions.

Other notable disappointments:

Killzone 3 (single player campaign is horrible but the multiplayer was good)

Grand Theft Auto 4 (vastly inferior to San Andreas in every way except for having better graphics)

Halo 4 (the ending is a short QTE fight with the boss with a somewhat boring story)

Dead Island (this is a close second to Mass Effect 3 but this was a new IP, the trailer had everyone talking)

Medal of Honor 2010 (the developers was talking beef to COD until the game was actually released)

Pretty much every Call of Duty game since Modern Warfare 1 (except for Modern Warfare 2) (no explanations needed)

Aliens: Colonial Marines (again no explanations needed)

Final Fantasy 13-1, 13-2, 13-3 (yes, I preemptively put the 3rd game here without playing it)

Assassin's Creed 3 (Connor was a boring character and the Desmond storyline was forgettable)

Star Wars: The Forces Unleashed (not sure how this game got a sequel)

I'm sure there are other games that I've missed (nor played such as Black Ops Vita).

I left off Skyrim.  Yeah, this game had everything such as story, ambiance, RPG elements, however the core battle mechanics were broken.  Fighting other foes (monsters, animals, people) was awful with absolutely no rhyme/reason other than blindly pressing attack (or magic), and there was almost no noticeable improvements from Elder Scrolls Oblivion.  If this game was renamed Elder Scrolls Sims, then I would call this the best RPG sims game ever.

Metal Gear Solid 4

Final Fantasy XIII

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Based upon my own personal expectations, at least.

The most dissapointing? Where were your expectations?

I'm going to go with FFXIII, don't know what saddens me the most, remembering all the expectations, or seeing copies at the garbage bins.

For me ...

RAGE
Mass Effect 3 (not for the ending)

Playstation = The Beast from the East

Sony + Nintendo = WIN! PS3 + PSV + PS4 + Wii U + 3DS

Deaf island, played it for a bit found it ok then just got really bored of it and stopped playing, luckily I borrowed it and didn't spend money on it
