Agreed. Sonic was a special case, simply because people have always wanted to see Mario vs. Sonic.
But honestly, Snake had no business being in the game. Yes, he had two old (and by all accounts bad) ports on NES. But he's known for the MGS series, and even though the Twin Snakes remake did come out on GC, I still just felt like he never fit SB. The obvious Konami choice would/should have been Simon Belmont, with an awesome CV based background, and a bunch of awesome, classic game inspired CV music to boot. THAT would have fit, and been awesome.
Solid Snake? Meh. So when I see people say "Oh they should totally put Bayonetta in it, because Nintendo's HELLA publishing Bayonetta 2, so why not, she'd be awesome".......it's facepalm worthy. It truly is. It isn't just a matter of "has ONE of their games been on a Nintendo console ever". It's the principle of "do you belong/FIT in the Smash Bros. universe", just as much, if not more. Mega Man fits because his 6 original games were on NES, he was a huge part of NES history. The first 3 (and best 3) Mega Man X games were on SNES. The forgotten gem MMV was on Game Boy. Plenty of history there, AND he fits the universe, he fits in with the other cast of characters.
The day that SB becomes a "hey, who else can we throw in here just to provide fan service?" franchise, and not, fundamentally at it's heart a celebration of Nintendo and it's consoles, is the day the series really goes down the shitter. I'm not denying that on some level, if it could ever happen, some kind of "Video Game All-Stars" crossover wouldn't be cool if done right. But Smash Bros. does not need to be, and should not be it.
