Given the fact its the only Zelda at the time, for many it WAS their first by default.
It was a pretty brutal game for knowing where to go.
Link to the past remains my favourite.

Soleron said: I should have said, no additional guidance. The picture and purpose of the Blue Candle is in the instruction manual. It's clearly a permanent item.
Oh, I see.

You can lose your sheild repeatidly in the game and the blue candle is replaced by the red candle.

Aonuma said "doesn’t go away after each use".
Soleron said: The candle still "doesn’t go away after each use" like Aonuma said. Also, would you said the sword is not a permanent item, despite being upgradeable?
I was just being technical. Rol already showed he hasn't played the game really. Which is sad since he's so entrenched in LoZ creation now. Kinda looses site sometimes why the original was so great... partly due to the complexity.
I beat it without Nintendo Power's pussification of the map. Made my own damn map. Pencil and paper can be useful people. The only help I remember getting was the key for lost woods. Maybe a random secret item like a heart container as well. Otherwise it was all me and my 11yr old brain.
RolStoppable said: So what happens if the boomerang in A Link Between Worlds can be replaced by a magic boomerang? Don't answer, because this is getting silly anyway. The actual point in ALBW is that a large number of permanent items are up for sale which should mean that the world will open up depending on your choice of what to buy first. Although it's perfectly possible that the amount of rupees needed for each item more or less forces the choice on the player.
I wasn't serious anyways.
Though this game is making me want to buy my kids 3DSs this year. Ugh. Damn Zelda looking way good on a portable.

It does mean the predictable miniboss -> item -> item related puzzles -> item related boss structure has to change. They will have to plan for you having various combinations of items in your inventory, which will lead to a lot more unintended advancement (a very good thing).

Didn't they say in an earlier ND that this game's dungeons can be attacked in any order?
Just throwing this into the discussion:
It could possibly be that this is not a shop to buy the first iterations of these items. It could also be an 'upgrade-shop'...

Maybe they're just being deceiving with the shot, but Link only has 4 hearts in the screenshot.
