Out of curiosity, how big is Doctor Who outside of the UK? I could never quite figure out how much of an impact the BBC and shows like this and Top Gear, for example, have.

Depends on country. But Top Gear has a massive audience outside the UK and is translated into many languages. Doctor Who is also pretty damn huge. Both are extremely popular in Australia to the point where they even try to give next day after the UK release viewing here to stop people torrenting it.

A good choice as he is an excellent actor.

Hmm, pie.

He looks like he'll make a good doctor but I haven't really seen much of him, i was concerned Matt Smith wouldn't be able to fill David Tennant's shoes but he's done really really well, so lets hope this guy can be even better.

He'll do a great job.

As I read elsewhere - it'll be interesting to hear what the Tumblr Fangirls think. Especially the "I heart Doctor Who, but Matt Smith isn't as hawt as David Tennant" faction.

Predictable, but interesting.

Who is much, much more than just Tennant & Tumblr Fangirls - and will be around long, long after they've departed. With an actor of Capaldi's range - from unbelievably comic to heart wrenchingly tragic - I feel we could be heading back to a Barry Letts inspired golden age - my personal favorite show runner - if the darker undertones that Moffat has slowly been introducing over the last couple of seasons are any indication.

Yay.

It's a welcomed change in the trend that has been surrounding Dr. Who for some time, with each doctor looking younger than the previous one, but of course with that trend the next doctor would have been a teenager.

I don't recognize the actor but looking at imdb I found something funny, in World War Z he plays a... "W.H.O. Doctor"!

Never heard of him but love Doctor Who so we'll see what he is like whenever the new episodes come out.

I still think of this guy when i hear Doctor Who though it's been a few years since he was the doctor. I wish the BBC did more quality shows like they used to. We have to pay for it through TV license so we should expect more and better programmes

Doctor Who is very well known in Canada. I have been watching the series for a very long time. Jon Pertwee was the first Doctor that I was introduced to and Tom Baker is still my all-time favourite. Doctor Who collectables and toys can be found quite easily.

I have never heard of this new guy before. I used to watch Torchwood for a  few seasons, but he was not on it then. I do not think it is being shown in Canada anymore.

Do you remember any of the old series specials that featured all the Doctors together? I wonder if they could do something like that again? Those were very cool.

In the absence of evidence to the contrary, always assume you have the upper hand.

Some extra indication of how popular it is here in Aus. The "Doctor who live: The next doctor who" BBC special is playing in prime time 8:30pm slot here tonight.

Could be an interesting choice. I wonder who he will draw the most comparisons to of previous doctors.

My money is actually on Eccleston.

maybe, hoping more for a style more towards pertwee/baker.

That is a good corss.  I'm thinking more Peter Davison/Tom Baker but some Pertwee would be good mixed in there too.

Pertwee grew on me as the Doctor.

But then they all do.  I think I usually don't like/not used to them at the beginning.  Take a while for them to grow on me.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Actually, he had a very big roll in 'Torchwood: Children of Earth'

He was the boring desk job government offical that had to make a bunch of painful decisions.  His performance in the show is something in my opinion would win an Acadame Award if it was a movie.  I would put that performance up with any of the best captured on film.
