Was thinking about this as I was playing Xenoblade today, but is there currently a need for game over screens? I mean, in the days of the Arcade, Game Over/Continue screens were designed to
1. Give you time to insert coins to continue playing
or
2. Drive the sense of failure so that you would try again and therefore pay more coins.
But nowadays when we die in a game, isn't it better to just plop the player back to right before they died so they don't have to scroll through a menu and click continue multiple times? I would imagine that would get tiring after a while. For example, imagine having to endure a death screen each time you died in Super Meat Boy or the challenge levels of Rayman Origins. Games can be harder if they don't force the player to view a game over screen again and again because then failure doesn't feel as tedious. It's a lot less stressful challenging a lvl 100+ superboss if one can come right back before the fight without any major consequence. It gives the player more freedom to tackle the challenges.
Or are some games just better off with them? And if so, why?
