Forums - Sony Discussion - PlayStation 4 gives up to 5.5GB of RAM to game developers

Who the hell cares if it were Sony or MS fans?
The fact remains that MS got a pretty bad response after they were honest and tell everyone that 5GB are for gaming.

Sony is doing the same now and their "light OS" is actually heavier than Windows. Sony will use 3.5 GB for multimedia stuff as well.
They just refused to talk about this.

My prediction that the technical gap between both consoles will be smaller than ever is coming true.

Were they honest and telling everyone?  All I've found is that "In a long interview today Marc Whitten of Microsoft confirmed how much of the Xbox One’s 8GB RAM will be taken up by the OS and games. He did this indirectly by not denying past rumors of the RAM being broken down this way. He was directly asked if 3GB RAM was used for the OS and he shyed away from answering, hinting that it may be true."  which isn't really the same as coming out and saying "Yes that rumor is true it's 3GB for the OS."

As far as I know no company has ever come out and specifically stated the RAM allocation for a system, they've simply said no comment and haven't denied rumors which people then take to mean that the rumor is true.

Because from what I've heard, these are not the final dev kits. Hence, they still only have 8GB of RAM for everything, including dev functions. The final ones will have more RAM, probably 10GB-12GB. That could be wrong, but there is still the possibility. Which is why I said I would laugh my ass off IF that turned out true.

@ dirtyp

Wow, a few reasonably short paragraphs is a wall of text to you? I guess it may be true what some say, that our youth is becoming lazy these days. Ugh, reading.

Also, your post was disingenuous, which lead me to misinterpret your post. The TV/multimedia focus only played a small role in what lead to the uproar. It was the DRM BS that was slowly leaked out after that caused the vast majority of that. After that, anything else was just fuel for the fire.

My point still stands, however. That was the general gaming public that reacted that way. Not just some random Sony fanboys making a fuss over something that's not really a negative. Which is what we have here, only with MS fans as the culprits, instead.

"They are pushing the entertainment and services. To do this, they decided to use 3 Operating Systems.(Windows, Xbox and one that connectst them both) This is  a remarkable achievement but it takes a huge toll on system resources. 3GB for OS is a huge negative here considering how much will be available for the PS4. The good thing is that they can reduce the OS footprint over time."

"That's a disaster waiting to happen if you ask me. If its anything like Windows, it will get slower over time."

"Yea, it does sound like it could be a potential nightmare.  No one makes the perfect OS.  I expect Sony to have a few hiccups at the start, too.  But to keep track of 3 OSs, 2 of which (if not all 3) will be running at the same time.  I don't know.  Just sounds like chaos waiting to happen, to me."

for the lolz

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

@Bold:  I would really love for people to understand that this is correct. At least for 4-5 years.  People like pointing fingers from all sides and it's fucking annoying. Who cares.  I also wish some people would step up and be the better person and just let shit go.  Yes, let's get angry over a freaking games console.

Nobody is saying 5GB isnt enough. Its is plenty, there is no problem with 5GB.

....aside from a few sony fans in the 360 thread where the 5GB was concerned of course.... then it was bad and a limiting factor affecting multiplats and thus bad for the whole world of gaming.

Well, it was the usual suspects who did so. There were also others that said it's still enough, IIRC.

lol usual suspects, yes the " usual suspects " from another side are here too ;)

Of course and always. But it's also what's in the posts, not just who it is.

Of course and I don't know why anyone would think 5GB was ever bad.  I guess it's more on other websites that people are complaining about 5 not being enough and they act like they know everything about RAM.  I certainly don't, but I atleast know 5GB is enough.

And I think couple of the biggest offenders in that thread are banned now.  Not sure though.

@ethomaz
If the numbers were all wrong then Sony would have denied it instead of saying no comment. No comment = guilty.

Sony never denied the DRM rumors too and... they always says no commets about rumors.

The DF article have the numbers wrong... what Sony confirmed (and everybody knows since reveal) is that the console have allocation in memory for games and OS... Sony just simplified that to:

x RAM OS
x RAM Flexible (not used by OS so devs can use it to Game if they want)
x RAM Games

We the numbers reserved for each is still unknown but the DF numbers are wrong... can be better or worst... nobody knows.

@ethomaz
I'm guessing you didn't watch E3 then? Microsoft hasn't officially confirmed that the Xbox One uses 3gb of ram for the OS either. It was a no comment just like Sony. What is your response to that?

MS rep confirmed 3GB for OS in a interview lol.

That's way different from what Sony did here.

@ethomaz
No he didn't confirm it. He didn't deny it. There is a difference.
