It sold. The spin lies in this part "handheld has been trending ahead of Sony and Microsoft’s offerings for the last three months". 3DS sold more in April and May. |
ahh good catch, so nothing to see here then.

June PS3 outsold every other console or handheld.

This new articles is talking about "LAST THREE MONTHS" BTW.

We had it heavily overtracked (or PS3 heavily undertracked) for the UK in June, since apparently PS3 was the best selling console for the month (which included handhelds).
Numbers here:

But the rest of the thread covers the issues and sources. I don't know if the numbers have been adjusted yet; I'll check later.
Anyway both news...
+ PS3 top seller in June
+ 3DS outsold PS3 and 360 in the last three months
Come from the same source... MCV UK... so you have that figure:
April: 3DS top
May: 3DS top
June: PS3 top
In VGC you have 3DS OVERtracked and PS3 UNDERtracked... how much? Nobody knows.
All this overtracking and undertracking talk just seems like...... fanboy talk.
No one can be sure about who is overtracked and who is undertracked, no matter where or when.
Even in Japan there is this controversy, just check the disparity between Famitsu and Media Create numbers.
As for software sales, the information is even more imprecise, since many handheld owners are buying their games by download. It was said at a certain moment that about 300k of AC:NL were sold through Eshop only on its first and second week in Japan. So the software numbers we have for Nintendo games are highly innacurate.
It´s about time the industry start to announce those digital sales numbers correctly, but if it is not even able to do that with consoles sales.... we can´t expect much.
So we shouldn´t make such a fuzz about those numbers. They can only give us a brief, but not an accurate, sales scenario, at most.

So why did MCV recently declare that PS3 was the best selling system in June in the UK and that TLoU flattened ACNL in the same period?
Besides, how can a 2-year old system priced 170€ outselling more expensive 7-year old consoles be considered as a grand performance? The truth is that before before being boosted by long-awaited new games and gigantic bargains, the 3DS was doing terrible in the UK, so it might just be a short-term bump.
