If you have a spare powerpoint handy and don't mind the bulk and cords, you save a lot of money by buying a desktop computer HDD. Portable HDD's of the same size cost more, but have the advantage of being USB powered and slimmer.
Almost all will be USB 3.0 these days but you should check anyway. If you want a drive that is faster than standard you'll have to pay extra of course.
In most parts of the Western world 2TB desktop and portable HDD's are now reasonably priced, with 3TB pricey, 4TB expensive, and anything more ridiculous. So ultimately you should purchase to your need. Play and download a lot of games and dont like deleting? Buy 2TB plus! Happy to delete? Maybe you can survive on 1TB (this gen, I'd just go with at least 2TB - be more expensive if you buy a 1TB then have to get another.).

Every HDD fails eventually.
Seagate has as good a rep as any for having a low early failure rate though.
