Forums - Gaming - Codename: "HANDICAP" - upcoming project

It's really coming together now, and looking much better. The only thing that really sticks out at me is that it looks a bit sterile and it's clear a lot more care and attention went into the character models (which are increadibly detailed for an indie project) than the environment in these shots.

I can't wait to see it in motion. Which reminds me how are you handling the animation, are you doing by hand or will you be able to use motion/performance capture in the final game.

Yea I like seeing the source sculpts that game artists create, the first time I saw the level of detail that went into zBrush sculpts with millions of polygons that then end up as ~10k poly models plus normals kinda blew my mind lol. The thing with high detail models (and tools) that the top games employ these days is that they can add the flaws to to the models. Baring heavy plastic surgery real humans are not "perfect" they are never 100% symmetrical and also things like scars etc. It's the imperfections that help sell a character as believable after all.

I browse the zBrush and polycount forums from time to time to look at the models that people produce and I always leave impressed.

I know, their stuff is crazy! We learned the hard way about too many polys, already. They can make or break performance in a substantial way!

Your character models still look very high poly, very smooth curves lol. Even in most AAA games today I can usually clearly see polygons around the edges especially around things like the ears, unless they are use tesselation like Max Payne 3.

We've discovered some blurring techniques, but even with smooth edges, you run the risk of a "plastic" look to the model. However, we've still got some decent amount of polys, but we'll still cut if we have to. As I mentioned earlier, hair has been the most difficult thing on the model(s).

In development, you start high on polys and shave off where need be. Then again:

Far smoother and more detailed than anything we've done and that's in-engine, on a 7th gen console.

Hair is a major chalange, very few games do hair really well lol. Quantic dream do fantastic charaacter models to be sure (anazing skin shading and great lighting as well), some of the best in the business. Tho they aren't perfect outside of the faces

Shew, I wish my team and I were on this level:

Even on PC, I haven't seen anything that looks like this. The in-game stuff, I can't imagine, will be quite as crisp. Then again, that is next gen, so it could look like that in real time (which would absolutely astonish)!

Then again, this pic could just be doing exactly what we, except somehow, they pre-rendered that on their engine.

Shadow Fall is definitely looking good, tho I think those character headshots look like bullshots to me. They may be cutscene models, but what I have seen from actual ingame screenshots isn't quite up to that level of detail and image quality. We should be seeing a lot of outstanding stuff over the next few years tho and I am ready to be surprised.

Well we should probably stop derailing your thread talking about other games lol.

I don't think that anyone really expects an indie game to beat out the best AAA games with budgets in the tens of millions and some of the best artists and programers around. But it's always good to aim high I guess, and what you have is very promising for a game that has 2 years of iteration ahead of it.

Just a small note, a female and a male can't be "identical" twins. They are just twins.

Unless one of them is transgender and had sex reassignment surgery. But I am not sure they let people that young do that...

Hair is hard to get right. The old one looks like something from the 80s and the new one is a bit IDK "poofy" I guess.

also what is with the glasses? All the black and the choker plus white hair makes me think of the Matrix or something for some reason lol.

I do like the Matrix... Maybe I should watch it again it's been a few years.
