Let's say two people walk into Gamestop. One is named Jim and the other is named Bob. Jim wants to buy a game console.
"Woah!" Jim says. "The Xbox 360 has the Witcher 2! I heard that was a great game!"
"No. It doesn't count.", says Bob.
"Doesn't count? Well, why the hell not? I mean, it's right here! It's evenon sale for $20!", Jim replies
"Sorry buddy. It doesn't count. It's also available on the PC. It doesn't count.", explains Bob. "You should get a PS3. It has more exclusives, anyway."
Jim raises an eybrow. "Well, I guess you're right. You're the one who's always on the internet. You know a lot about these things." Jim looks a little further. "Dead Rising? It's kinda old but I've heard good things about that one, too!"
"Have you been sniffing glue!? That game got ported to the Wii back in like 2009! You can't base your decision on games that are ports! You have to base it on exclusives! Those are the games that tell which console is special and unique!" Say Bob, as he pays another $5 on his Final Fantasy Versus XIII pre-order.
"Well yeah, I have a Wii somewhere. I heard it wasn't a very good port, though. Missing a lot of features....", Jim defends.
"Nope. Still doesn't count. You can play it somewhere else besides the Xbox 360. Sorry, bro. I don't make the rules." says Bob.
"Well fuck. What am I waiting for! I'm buying that PS3!!" Says Jim
Later on that night, Jim sits alone in his home. He has waited for the PSN update for Twisted Metal to finally complete so he can play online. He realizes that, while the PS3 has a ton of great exclusives like The Last of Us and Us and Flower (which didn't count because it was available on PSN and isn't a hardcore game), there were some games that ARE available on Xbox 360 and PC that werent available in any form on the PS3. After waiting for an hour to finally get online in Twisted Metal, Jim hangs himself with a bedsheet. His last words were "Fuck you, Bob..."
The previous text was based on a true story.
See, the thing is, having a game available on Xbox 360 AND PC doesn't make the game or the Xbox or PC less special because it's "multi-plat". If anything, it makes the PS3 LESS desireable because it's the one format that doesn't have that title! It's like buying a car based on its special features like 90 miles per gallon and totally ignoring the fact that it doesn't have air-conditioning because air-conditioning is not exclusive. That's kind of a big deal. Do you think that the person who is interested in buying a PS3 or a 360 gives a darn that Fable III got ported to the PC? He just wants to play the game! One console has it. The other console doesn't. Simple, right?
That's why I propose we compare consoles like This: One console's ENTIRE library vs. another console's ENTIRE library. I know it sounds crazy and it scares people but it just might work. Had Jim considered this, he might still be alive today. Don't say a game doesn't count because "It's casual", "it's download only", "it's multi-plat", "it's from a milked franchise", "it has a girl on the cover", or any other crazy reason we come up with to say a game doesn't count as a game. Who knows? It just might save a life.
