Forums - Gaming Discussion - My one issue with the "exclusives" argument

Let's say two people walk into Gamestop.  One is named Jim and the other is named Bob.  Jim wants to buy a game console.

"Woah!" Jim says.  "The Xbox 360 has the Witcher 2!  I heard that was a great game!"

"No.  It doesn't count.", says Bob.

"Doesn't count?  Well, why the hell not?  I mean, it's right here!  It's evenon sale for $20!", Jim replies

"Sorry buddy.  It doesn't count.  It's also available on the PC.  It doesn't count.", explains Bob.  "You should get a PS3.  It has more exclusives, anyway."

Jim raises an eybrow.  "Well, I guess you're right.  You're the one who's always on the internet.  You know a lot about these things."  Jim looks a little further.  "Dead Rising?  It's kinda old but I've heard good things about that one, too!"

"Have you been sniffing glue!?  That game got ported to the Wii back in like 2009!  You can't base your decision on games that are ports!  You have to base it on exclusives!  Those are the games that tell which console is special and unique!"  Say Bob, as he pays another $5 on his Final Fantasy Versus XIII pre-order.

"Well yeah, I have a Wii somewhere.  I heard it wasn't a very good port, though.  Missing a lot of features....", Jim defends.

"Nope.  Still doesn't count.  You can play it somewhere else besides the Xbox 360.  Sorry, bro.  I don't make the rules." says Bob.

"Well fuck.  What am I waiting for!  I'm buying that PS3!!"  Says Jim

Later on that night, Jim sits alone in his home.  He has waited for the PSN update for Twisted Metal to finally complete so he can play online.  He realizes that, while the PS3 has a ton of great exclusives like The Last of Us and Us and Flower (which didn't count because it was available on PSN and isn't a hardcore game), there were some games that ARE available on Xbox 360 and PC that werent available in any form on the PS3.  After waiting for an hour to finally get online in Twisted Metal, Jim hangs himself with a bedsheet.  His last words were "Fuck you, Bob..."

The previous text was based on a true story.

See, the thing is, having a game available on Xbox 360 AND PC doesn't make the game or the Xbox or PC less special because it's "multi-plat".  If anything, it makes the PS3 LESS desireable because it's the one format that doesn't have that title!  It's like buying a car based on its special features like 90 miles per gallon and totally ignoring the fact that it doesn't have air-conditioning because air-conditioning is not exclusive.  That's kind of a big deal.  Do you think that the person who is interested in buying a PS3 or a 360 gives a darn that Fable III got ported to the PC?  He just wants to play the game!  One console has it.  The other console doesn't. Simple, right?

That's why I propose we compare consoles like This:  One console's ENTIRE library vs. another console's ENTIRE library.  I know it sounds crazy and it scares people but it just might work.  Had Jim considered this, he might still be alive today.  Don't say a game doesn't count because "It's casual", "it's download only", "it's multi-plat", "it's from a milked franchise", "it has a girl on the cover", or any other crazy reason we come up with to say a game doesn't count as a game.  Who knows?  It just might save a life.

LOL, Amen!

THANK YOU. I thought I was the only one lol.

In short: PS3 has multiplats not on 360 like MLB, FF14, and a few others. But Xbox multiplats not on PS3 are vastly numerically superior. It is one of MS's #1 strategies this gen.

Sony fans praise the almighty exclusive not just because they are what they are, but in short doing so cripples Xbox's main strategy: to secure games NOT on playstation.

Gears of War, Left 4 Dead 1/2, Dead Rising, Witcher 2, Minecraft, etc etc etc........not on PS3. Doesn't count, it aint exclusive. Upcoming X1 games that are shared with Windows 8, XBLA games shared with tablets.......sorry, not exclusive. It doesn't exist.

This is a Sony world unfortunately, something Ive been trying to fight for a while, and sadly it comes to the point where we just live in their world and play by their rules. It sickens me to no end.

If its on one and not the other, it counts, both ways. In a true Xbox vs PS debate, these titles deserve a mention. Any filtering of these games is propaganda, nothing more.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

The reason it "doesn't count" is if Jim has a good PC.

For someone like myself who has a rather beastly PC: Choosing a 360 is rather foolish compared to the exclusives found on the PS3.

Not only is the 360/PC games available for me on the PC but they are also better due to the hardware being newer as well as them at.. times.. being.. free (Pirates.. derp)

Walking around here in Scandanavia and you'll see barely anyone calling a 360/PC game for exclusive due to the fact that so many of us are PC oriented.

I find this insulting to Twisted Metal, okay so the new one was no Black or World Tour but still...

Hmm, pie.

I think the guys didn't understand this fact... EVERYBODY HAVE A PC.

So you can play Minecraft on PC if you want.

So PS3 users can play Minecraft without Xbox 360... I think MS saw that because after the first release Gears and Halo never back to PC... now they are exclusives like PS3 ones.

You buy something that agregates... so PS3 agreegates more to your game life than 360 because a lot of games you can buy in PC.

Of course you need to buy a 360 if you want a Halo, Forza, Gears, etc... if you want these games buy a 360.

So really, thats an admission that PS can't stand up by itself against Xbox?

Because in a strict PS vs Xbox debate, neglecting these types of games seems silly. Bringing in a PC to fight PS battles.....thats what these types of replies sound like.

The 360 sales of Left 4 Dead and especially Minecraft shows that there is a big market for console only gamers. These titles clearly matter.

No. You can't play PS3 games on PC... you need the PS3 for most of games.

You can think in this way: 360 + PC vs PS3 + PC what give you more games? Remember EVERYBODY HAVE A PC.

Add them then, It still doesnt fix the facts that Minecraft has become your idea of xbox exclusivity. That's what happens when you stop making games on a console and move on to the next.

¬_¬ or, you know, people could actually look at their own situation and decides what's best _for them_
