Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why are VC games so damn expensive?

I think a lot of people aren't appreciating the fact that these games are probably more replayable than a lot of full priced Wii games.

Crusty VGchartz old timer who sporadically returns & posts. Let's debate nebulous shit and expand our perpectives. Or whatever.

By the way I don't have a NES/SNES/N64.

This might only apply to the UK.

Why are VC games so expensive? It cost £15 (30$) for 2000 Wii points in the UK. A N64 game cost 1000 points, so that is £7.50 (15$) for a N64 game. That is just ridiculous! I wanted to buy LoZ:OoT, SM64 and MK64, but realized it would cost me £22.50 (45$) in total, which is such a rip off.

In comparison, on the PS store I can buy a PS1 game for £3.50 (7$) which is fine. I have bought Theme Hospital, Crash Bandicoot and Medieval for £3.50 (7$) each which is very fair.

Why are N64 games double the price of PS1 games? It has stopped me buying three of the supposedly best games ever. It is also stupid that a NES game costs as much as a PS1 game and a SNES is more than £5 (10$).

Doesn't anyone else feel ripped off by this?

Rant over.

Damn, Wii points are expensive in the UK! I picked up a 5000 Wii points card for 5000 yen(~$47), which according to XE.com is about £24. Plus the 5000 point card came with a free Wii classic controller too!

we get screwed on price thats the way it is. they are overpriced without good reason, i think the price should be:

NES - 50p - £1
SNES - £1.50 - £2.00
N64 - £2.50 - £3.00

You don't even own a Wii!

From my own experience that report is nonsense. 9/10 times the games are cheaper on eBay which is why I buy them there instead.

You must be the luckiest person on Ebay. Congrats!

Care to share some links?

OK, here are the costs of games on the virtual console:

NES - 500 - £3.75
SNES & Mega Drive - 800 - £6
N64 - 1000 - £7.50

I've taken the 1st 3 alphabetical releases on the VC and looked at the completed listing prices. Where I couldn't find a completed listing I've moved onto the next alphabetical game. The majority are cheaper even when you include postage, and you're getting an actual physical copy. It has nothing to do with being lucky, eBay is simply cheaper for the majority of games.

If you still don't believe me I'll do it for other consoles too but it's pretty boring looking at completed eBay listings!

^also take in acct buying the system to play them

Links don't work for me. I'll take your word for it that those games sold for those prices.

I think you have to be signed into eBay to view completed listings. It may well be different in the US but as usual in rip-off Britain eBay is cheaper. If you're going to buy a load of games then it's worth picking up the console and buying the physical games. If you only want one and don't own the console then the VC's a better option. As I already have a lot of the VC consoles it makes sense for me to buy real copies both because of their price and because I can always resell them if I decide I don't like them. Old consoles are incredibly cheap too. I can't remember the exact prices of most of the ones I've bought but most recently an N64 cost me £8 and I saw a PlayStation in a second hand shop the other day for £2.99. My DS, Game Boy Color and original Game Boy are the only gaming machines I've ever bought new.
