Forums - General - Are cultural traditions a good or bad thing? do you follow them?

well its late here, im tired so ill make things pretty simple. how do you feel about cultural traditions? do you feel that they have a postive effect on its society, a negative one or it does no harm or good?

do you feel that we should do things just because our fathers and grandfathers and the many before them did so? or do traditions preserve culture and a countries identity?

please lets keep things civil, while others may feel differently about what you think lets keep this thread and posts in it respectful, thank you

No.

The ones for my country are embarrassing and antiquated. Here's a video to prove that cultural traditions need to die.

Depends on the impact of individuals. If there's overall happiness and a better quality of life, why change it?

Our ancestors and grandparents did amazing things as well as atrocious things. It's our job to decipher what's best to keep and what needs change.

It depends on the tradition. Some have good effects while others have bad effects. I tend to keep the positives and mitigate (or get rid of entirely) the bad ones. In some cases I subvert tradition in favor of transition - other cases I do not. Some things have to be preserved. I believe in preservation (for positives) and that is becoming increasingly difficult in our highly globalized world. Practices and norms that were once local are now on the wane, and people are adopting things they see from larger more influential cultures. It saddens me when I go to a cultural concert in the Caribbean or Latin America and they sing American rock songs or provide hamburgers and hot dogs instead of their indigenous food and local music (note I said cultural shows which are supposed to reflect things of the culture). It's a serious problem for some countries like France which have quotas of cultural items in order to prevent dilution. They are concerned about their identity. I don't blame them.

depends. Some traditions are completely out of touch with modern society.
Other traditions are totally accepted, like your birthday or marriage and burial. yes they are traditions.

Good of course. Culture and traditions is what makes us humans and they tie us together. The multicultural paradigm needs to die because it splits and dilutes society and interaction between people.
