Wait so everybody loves Google and are ok with them seeing what u search?

I personally use Alta Vista.

Google Search isn't as bad as Gmail, however.  Gmail actually reads your e-mail.  So they can offer you the convience of tailored ads.

I have to add, I love the people who are up in arms about the NSA but use Gmail.  I guess losing your pricacy is only OK when it's buried in the EULA, not published in a law the was passed in 2001 and talked about in the news back then.

do you really think kinect will be used in the way you think. then you wont buy the PS4 camera because it might be watching you as well.

Kinect is mandatory because of TV and Sports. And Microsoft think the Kinect 1.0 buyers (casuals) will care enough for another one for $500. Big mistake, in my opinion.

If I was worried about being monitored by Kinect I would just face it towards the wall and tape the mic!

That's just me!

Would you prefer tailered ads or random ads?

Well ... it's not just about the device, it's the company behind it ( Microsoft ) and their history and the mentality of the managers and executives.

The thing that set people off is the fact that it was made mandatory by the same company who was so focused and determined about that drm always online check up thing

America seems to have something weird going on and it just so happens that MS is the American company focused on this stuff out of the big 3

You never know what they might do

I will trust the incompetence of other guys that got their information and their customer's stolen.

I work with web and TV advertising and have 10 years experience doing it. While the OP is very clever, it simply isn't how advertising can work on TV or web.

TV advertising is strictly linear. What that means is that it is pre-set ahead of time and can not be dynamically changed based on users or preferences. So they can't show you different ads based on what Kinect is able to see.

Internet IP based advertising could accomplish this technically but in order for this to work, Microsoft would need to open the Kinect API for advertising purposes, and that will release a huge shitstorm about privacy. So I don't see this happening.

Down the road(10+ years), if Kinect and Microsoft stick around with this idea though...this actually may be a reality. But it will much bigger than the OP's idea of controlling the screen. Then you will have little Kinects eveywhere and ads will follow you around on billboards and in the subway...wherever you go, they go as they are able to detect your face and recognize who you are.
