There's a difference between a toolkit and a graphics API. The API Sony/AMD provides will be based on OpenGL.


Yes, but like you said, the API is standardized. But features can be created on top of it when you're able to code to the metal. That's where the ever evolving toolkits come into play, with their set of features updated throughout the course of the console gen.

How many games really use 11 the most. Especially when DX9 is still supported.

DX9 is still the standard, yes, but 11 hasn't "fizzled out" as you claimed. Tomb Raider, Crysis 3, and Metro: Last Light are all DX11 games. In fact, Crysis 3 only supports that.

That's great. But in the end 9 is still used in major games. That's what I was getting at. Crysis 3 is really the only game that has the balls to not allow 9 or 10. How old is 9? You've done something wrong to not have 11 as a standard.

You are thinking about software updates and not hardware capabilities, hardware optimization is required to run certain features at a faster speed, so while you can implement new features to the API and make it run on a certain hardware, it doesn't mean that those feature sets will be running at good speeds. It's not so simple as "I'm gonna rewrite this code to this hardware that's already touching the home base and get awesome performance on this other feature that this hardware wasn't optimized for to start with!" That'd be some voodoo magic shit.

Sorry, but developers will easily take advantage of the feature available in 11.2. DirectX 11 is supported on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1. So the base functionality in DirectX 11 is available to every modern Windows platform. Every installation of Windows 8 will become a Windows 8.1 installation, so I don't see the adoption of Windows 8.1 and DirectX 11.2 being a hurdle. So, at worse, in the near future, you'll be looking at developers that offer both DirectX 11 and DirectX 11.2 support. Long-term if the features of DirectX 11.2 are compelling enough then you'll see developers moving development over to it simply because more and more installations of Windows 8.1 will happen as well as more and more installations of Xbox Ones.



Still not enough reason to get the gamer in me to upgrade to Windows 8.1.

Considering that AMD believes PC graphical technology is on the verge of a slump (and MS hasnt done anything to alleviate his concerns, besides redacting a really stupid comment about DirectX not evolving and not needing the MPVs anymore)

It's called MS dicking around not putting newer DX in older Windows and 7th gen consoles stayed for too long.

I want Windows 8.2 or 9 already after installing 8.1 preview on my laptop lol..... It's still not that good.



I read this article yesterday... it seemed the people upset about this weren't Sony Fans but win 7 users
