Forums - Gaming - Agree/disagree: Console games are generally of a higher standard than portable games

Which are generally better?

Console games 86 74.78%

Handheld games 29 25.22%

Total:115

Console games are much better, although obviously there are exceptions.

I would agree that consoles games are of a higher quality in general.

I however would not say that they are better than handheld games.

This. In terms of budget, sure it's beyond obvious, but some games simply don't work that well on a console. It depends on the grenre. For example, I play a brain training game called Smart as almost every day. There's no way I'd bother playing it on my ps3. Also, platform games work much better on a handheld. I think I got Rayman Legends (ps3) for free and never bothered playing it, while on my vita, it was one of the best games I had played in years.

So in other words, no console games are not better, just more polished and worth more money for the whole package (sound etc).

Higher production values - would be embarassing if not.
"Better" - Hell no, portable games can just be as good. See Fire Emblem: Awakening and Persona 4: Golden for some recent examples.

to be honest the handhelds take the crown, at the moment the handhelds just have better quality games, and more diversity in genres, i just wish Nintendo would release a DS/3DS player Add-on for the Wii U so i could play them on the big screen.

Personally I find that portable games are much more fun to play (like Fire Emblem and P4G) because their focus is on gameplay and not graphics.

Note: Does not include iOS or anything, just gaming handhelds versus home consoles.

Do you believe console games are generally better than their handheld cousins?

The point of the PS4 and Xbox One being powerful and having online/media services is because PCs or handeld, including mobile opponents, can't beat that.

The problem with handeld it that, also it's "small" and cheap so it's more appealing to kids and families, it's also easier to develop and also to sell lots of crap, which diminished the overall quality of a console and its value.

I predict that might happen with the 3DS. It's selling great right now, but less than the DS at the same point after the launch, and mobile games are soon going to look better than a 3DS game.

But the truth is, the reason why PS4/Xbox One will also sell is because, trust me, after playing years on a mobile and on a 15" PC which both gets outdated 2 or 3 years after bought it,  you get tired of bullshit and you want spectacle on a big screen...

Of course some handheld games are better than some console games.

Of course it is wonderful to not have to sit through tedious cut-scenes and get straight to the meat of the gameplay.

But of course console games are generally[i/] better, a lot more time and money goes into making them (I would assume).

Too much planning, and you'll never get anything done.

Yeah, add in the fact that as the handheld gaming platforms power increase, the difference between the two shrinks excluding stuff usually found in the high production blockbuster games like advance AI or advanced physics engines and stuff.

Console games are definitely held to a higher standard. For example, pushing out great graphics is a pretty top priority on consoles, but I've played so many handheld games where the graphics were brought up to pretty much the minimum acceptable level. Making the most out of the hardware is just not as important on handhelds. (At least that's the case with Nintendo handhelds, which I guess are the only ones I have experience with.) And that's not to say that graphics are more important than fun factor, but it just means the developers don't always put in the extra effort when they don't feel they have to.

I mean, the 3DS is capable of Gamecube graphics, but there are so many games that look barely better than N64 games. And the DS could do better than N64, but most of them looked like SNES games. It's just kind of the way things go.
