AMD's Mantle API: how it works and why PC developers will adopt it

Comments3

Since the fall, we’ve heard some eyebrow-raising claims about Mantle, AMD’s new API (application programming interface). The numbers being tossed around in terms of performance-gain seem almost hard to believe, with Battlefield 4 running up to 45% faster via Mantle over DirectX.

It seems too good to be true, so we talked with AMD’s Robert Hallock. He explained how AMD have been able to achieve these kind of results with their API, and why he thinks it has such a strong case for being adopted as a standard. If he’s right, Mantle could spell huge changes for how games are made, and what kind of performance PC gamers can expect from their own machines.

China’s free-to-play shooter CrossFire earns more than League of Legends and World of Warcraft combined

Comments1

Tencent must be pretty chuffed right now. Their latest earnings report for 2013 shows that CrossFire alone, their free-to-play shooter, earned them $957 million. If that wasn’t enough, their other major free-to-play game, League of Legends, earned them another $624 million.

Free-to-play is clearly huge in China. Shows why quite so many developers are eager to tap into the market.

Games for Windows Live is dying, we check the life support of games

Microsoft announced last year that Games for Windows would shut down its marketplace features on August 22, 2013, signaling the beginning of the end for the service. Never quite achieving its desired critical mass, GFWL handled DRM, achievements, and multiplayer for a long list of games.

A since-deleted support article for Age of Empires Online stated that the GFWL service would be discontinued on July 1, 2014. Although Microsoft has not yet made an official announcement on the matter, a number of developers took this to mean that their games would effectively become unplayable in July and began work to divorce them from GFWLs, often switching over to Steamworks.

However, a large number of developers remained quiet about plans, so Joystiq reached out to get the official word on what the future may hold for their games past July.

PC Gamer at 07:11 on 18 January 2014

As the petition asking Rockstar to bring GTA 5 to PC passes 650,000 signees, yet more evidence for a PC edition has emerged. This time it's a 150-page bug log detailing issues arising from hundreds of GTA 5 builds tested between April 2009 and August 2013, with reference to a "PC version" from as early as June 2012.

The document contains over 170 references to PC development bugs, numerous notes on DX11 support and a related "smog" weather setting, mention of a "lastgen" toggle used during development and bugs relating to 64-bit system testing.

DayZ Standalone experimental patch puts an end to backpack Inception

Comment

Currently you can store an infinite number of backpacks in DayZ. You put a backpack inside another backpack inside another backpack inside another... and so on. Each of them can also be filled with items. It means that every time you rob someone of their bag you might have discovered the equivalent of a warehouse-full of can openers.

Well, not for much longer, Bohemia are working on a patch that puts an end to this Mary Poppins bag effect.

So Im having trouble choosing between two games. Should I get Final Fantasy 8 (Steam) or The Banner Saga? I know the two are different, but I just cannot choose at all right now. On one hand, I want to support Japanese development on PC, however on the other hand, The Banner Saga just looks so good. Anyone want to help me out?
