Rust to lose zombies, gain defence solutions; Facepunch "knocked on [their] arses" by sales

Comments2

Rust sales have been “strong” since its release via Steam Early Access - silly strong. Better than Garry’s Mod, and better even than incredi-popular 2D sandbox Starbound

“We really have been knocked on our arses by sales,” said Facepunch’s Garry Newman. “Our plan was to release the alpha on to Steam in a low-key way and slowly build up steam until the game was in a decent state. But our player counts have exploded our wildest dreams.”

First priority has been to work with GSP to bring more servers online, and to squash residual DDOS problems (“for the most part they seem to have subsided”). Next comes the removal of zombies, and providing players with more means to defend themselves.

So Kaveri reviews start to appear, for the A8-7600 and the A10-7850K processors.

And the situation is the same as before. They are "good" and an improvement over the parts they are replacing, but compared to its Intel counterparts they are still behind in terms of CPU power, although the GPU is better, as it should.

But t shows that, if software moves that way, HSA is the way to go.

If you're a gamer on a tight budget, it's really the best option and could be relatively potent in Hybrid Crossfire.

Otherwise I still highly recommend an Intel Quad paired up with an AMD/nVidia GPU at this point because I still think it's a wise idea to get a set-up that's excellent at all past and future games, right now HSA is betting only on the future.

I agree about the CPU and with HSA being only promising.

The thing is, though, that no one will code their programs to use both the CPU and GPU unless they know that their work isn't wasted. AMD has to produce those HSA processors to entice devs to use them to its full potential.

AMD better hope that it doesn't take as long as coding for 64 bit processors, or else they are screwed.

AMD needs to find a way to automate their HSA set up. When a program is doing some math, the GPU should automatically be feed the data and do the processing. If AMD can pull that off, AMD is going to essentially pull a fast one on Intel.

I think that's the eventual goal of Fusion.
For instance, AMD has a nerfed floating point unit in it's CPU's, something that GPU's are very very good at handling however AMD's CPU's are very good at Integers too, the CPU and GPU simply need to be even more tightly integrated for that to happen.

If the time comes and they do make it a seamless implementation, then it's really going to shine, even with  HSA, hUMA, Kaveri in full swing... I'll still recommend an Intel quad over AMD's CPU's at this point in time because it's going to be fast in everything.

Two new forums hint at Paradox going to space and Antiquity

Comment

Paradox Interactive has added two new forums to the "upcoming games" section of the official forums, codenamed Project Nero and Project Armstrong, along with two pieces of concept art. Now is the time for speculation, though we won't have to wait long to find out exactly what these projects are. Paradox will be spilling the beans on January 23rd, which is conveniently in the middle of this year's Paradox Convention.

I suspect that Project Nero might be a new Europa Universalis: Rome, while Project Armstrong could certainly be related to a new Hearts of Iron game focusing on the space age, perhaps.

There's a lot of killing going on right now, which makes me glad I'm in the safety of my flat instead of a ship.

The five shapes of Steam Machine you didn't see at CES 2014

Comment

Since properly revealing its many forms at CES last week, the Steam Machine has captured the hearts and minds of the gaming population at large, auto-becoming the must have gadget of 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2019, and absorbing innovation awards from every corner of the mediasphere like a huge and unstoppable plaudit-sponge. I'm not sure if that's even true, but Valve definitely partnered with a bunch of third party manufacturers and they definitely showed us pictures of all sorts of differently sized PC cases, each one more expensive and improbably shaped than the last.

But what is a Steam Machine, and what does it mean for the future of games? Genuinely I've no idea and I'm not going to condescend by claiming to have the sort of insight you'd imagine I should have after working in the games industry for the best part of a decade, so instead here are FIVE different kinds of shapes of Steam Machine I'd like to see become a reality. Coincidentally, that's the same number of comedy shapes that I know!
