Call of Duty: Ghosts is one of the first big budget PC games to demand its users have more than 4GB of system RAM, so much so that the game simply refuses to launch if it detects there’s less available. However, users on Guru3D and other forums are reporting the game only occupies between 1.5 and 2GB of RAM on the game’s highest settings. Additionally, unlike Treyarch’s Black Ops 2, Ghosts is locked to a 65 degree field of view, which can lead to motion sickness among some users. Luckily, some modders have created a utility that will unlock the FOV in the game’s Multiplayer to help you avoid some headaches.

However, he did acknowledge that smaller studios might end up making SteamOS exclusive titles if they don’t have the resources to port the game elsewhere.

Defender’s Quest is my favourite tower defence game. The designers managed to combine the basic idea of positioning units on a series of paths with RPG upgrade systems without botching the balance of the entire campaign, or limiting player choice. It’s a quietly brilliant piece of work and news of a sequel is most welcome. Level Up Labs are taking preorders for Defender’s Quest II: Mists of Ruin now, with Kickstarter style reward tiers. I’d never suggest that anyone preorder anything that isn’t in extremely limited supply but $15 will secure a copy of the sequel on release and a copy of the original game right now. If you haven’t played it already, that’s worth considering. There’s even an online demo of the first game. Teaser trailer beyond the ramparts.

For the purposes of this news post, I am going to run with the question that the Car Mechanic Simulator 2014 press release ponders: “Have you ever wondered what’s it like to own a mechanic workshop?” Yes. Yes I have. I long for the nuts, the bolts, the oil changes, and the satisfying clink of metal tools on metal bits. It’s everything I’ve ever dreamed of, but because of a horrendous allergy to the smell of pine, and a fear of breaking brakes, I am unable to be one. If only there was a way that I could have all the work of a car mechanic, but with none of the responsibility? If only I had a pair of trailers that would somehow lead the way, like a racing line to my heart.

Valve have shed a little light on how Steam’s Offline Mode works and how they’re working to improve it. One of the developer’s programmers, Henry Goffin, took to Steam’s forums to answer a question about how the client’s offline mode is supposed to work: “[it’s] designed to be indefinite,” he wrote. “You can't access any of Steam's online features such as friends lists or saved game synchronization, of course, but the client should allow you to run in Offline Mode for as long as you like.”
Since the client’s launch back in 2004 users have come across bugs with the feature and being able to play your games without an internet connection has never been a guarantee. According to Goffin, the developer’s been working on improvements that will go live "some day soon".

Europa Universalis IV is to have its first expansion by Christmas. First of many, one would expect - Crusader Kings II has had four, and its successor’s response has been every bit as glowing. No incremental improvement this, though. Conquest of Paradise offers nothing less than an experiential shake-up - the promise of true discovery in place of our usual historical omniscience.
In Conquest of Paradise, the atlas has yet to be drawn, and we’ll have to discover the Americas without already knowing where they are.

Battlefield 4 was a boxed PC game that came out last week. But despite levelution, despite umpteen trailers, it was ultimately no match for the quiet landslide that happens when the latest iteration of Football Manager hits shelves in the United Kingdom, where people famously quite like football.

This time last year, Valve launched Dota 2’s Diretide update - an alternate Halloween replete with a 30 minute game mode and rash of new couriers. As you know, once is the requisite number of times a thing must happen before it’s declared tradition, and so the Dota 2 community sat up on October 30 again this year and waited. On October 31, they waited. And on November 1, when a new patch introduced some distinctly unfestive cosmetic items, they waited.
Now, they’re done waiting. And with no explanation forthcoming from Valve, they’ve turned their complaint cannons against the corporation with the nearest possible nomenclature: car manufacturers Volvo.

Call of Duty: Ghosts has just been released in a number of regions, and we have some good and some bad news for PC gamers. The good news is that Infinity Ward will introduce PhysX Fur (same technique that will be used in The Witcher 3) via a future patch. The bad news is that the game won’t be able to launch on systems without – at least – 6BG of RAM. What’s really funny here is that the game does not use more than 1-2GB of RAM. Continue reading →
