But let's say only 1% of Steam had a dual-GPU solution. That's still 1.7 million gamers and with the amount of years I have spent on Enthusiast PC forums, I would believe the number is higher than either of that.

There is your problem. You spend your time in Enthusiast PC forums and lose the perspective of a "normal" PC gamer. Even the people who are discussing in other gaming forums aren't very representative for the average gamer. They are more invested in their hobbies than the average, it is more important to them than to the multitude of people who buy and play less than a handful of games on Steam (or console) each year.

People who discuss in car / hi-fi / real estate forums usually also have a skewed view about what the average person is willing to pay for a car / stereo / rent. People who write in a Porsche forum probably can't even believe that many people can't afford a car at all.

And "only" 1% of Steam? It took a long time to get the GTX 980  to reach 1%. Do you think Multi-GPU-setups are as popular as this card?

Win 1 of 50 codes for Western Press, a frontier duelling game

http://www.pcgamer.com/win-1-of-50-codes-for-western-press-a-frontier-duelling-game/

Western Press is a frontier duelling game, and as far as simulations go, it's about as unrealistic as you can get. Rather than simply firing your gun, one must press a series of keys as quickly as possible – quicker than your opponent – in order to win. It's a simple enough concept, but it's a lot of fun – especially in a room full of competitive people who like to swear really loudly while drinking beer.

Patch notes haven't been released, but Gearbox programmer Dave E. said in a message posted on the Gearbox forums that the new systems and tools should enable mod makers to “do some really exciting stuff.”

Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap remake gets reveal trailer

http://www.pcgamer.com/wonder-boy-the-dragons-trap-remake-gets-reveal-trailer/

If you'll permit a little nostalgia, Master System platformer Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap was one of the first games I ever played set in a world rather than a series of levels; it opened my mind to new possibilities as a kid, and after playing it, I was always a bit disappointed by platform games that had more traditional linear levels—all that felt very dated, suddenly.

Cult 3DO horror D makes its way to PC

http://www.pcgamer.com/cult-3do-horror-d-makes-its-way-to-pc/

Adventure games have gone through some weird and interesting phases over the last couple of decades. Kenji Eno's 1996 3DO cult horror-adventure D arrived during the genre's tumultuous obsession with the then-revolutionary compact disc format, and as such it featured copious 3D cutscenes rendered in charmingly grainy, low-poly 3D. But there were other interesting features: the whole game took place in real-time, over a two-hour period, and if you wanted to pause or save the game and return to it later, well, you couldn't—there was no save system. D was exactly the sort of oddity that would disappear to the mists of time—and it did, except a PC version has now suddenly popped up on GOG.

When they find out they had those repost mods reported

Seriously though it's a bit of a sad situation because some modders have decided to wash their hands of their hobby because of their work being taken without credit, that alone is bad for both platforms and this whole situation is just going to stifle mod growth for the consoles in the longrun, especially for those demanding mods from modders on a constant basis.

So really, what you are comparing is hundreds of potentially different paired GPU's against a single GPU?

SLI/Crossfire isn't really tied to any specific GPU... That technology has been around since 1998 starting with SLI Voodoo 2's and ATI a year later releasing the Dual-GPU single card Rage Fury Maxx. It wasn't untill the Radeon x8xx series and nVdia's 6000 series did SLI Crossfire become a staple technology.

Since that time we have had almost a dozen GPU generation releases, that's over a decade of gamers with dual-GPU's in their rigs, do you really think Multi-GPU's is only in the latest high-end PC's? They aren't, I have seen gamers still rocking a couple of 6-7 year old Radeon 5850's/5870's and are still maxing out most games, or getting mostly high settings.

There are AMD Desktops and Laptops where they pair the IGP up with a second GPU and run them in crossfire.
I have seen people buy OEM rigs and add a second low-end card as it's a cheap upgrade.

Why even mention ancient 3Dfx and ATI cards? Do you really think there are many people who still use these cards today? I also doubt that there are many Fermi SLI-combinations still active nowadays. It makes much more sense to replace the 2 old cards with 1 newer card, which is even faster than the old setup, doesn't have to rely on SLI/CF profiles, supports new features/codecs/interfaces and amortizes its price very fast with lower electricity costs.

But believe what you want, I still have my doubts that many people favor such a stopgap solution. You can't prove that there are millions of active multi-GPU setups and I can't prove that there are less than 300k.
