I do think the time is right for a secondary OS competitor. MS has done pretty much everything possible to make people dislike Windows and if there is an alternative, I think people would shift to the alternative relatively quickly. The issue of course is that there isn't that perfect secondary OS to take advantage. MacOS is locked down to apple's ecosystem and Linux isn't user friendly enough along with drm and anti cheat issues. Both don't have as wide a compatibility as Windows does.

I do think if Valve really put in a big push to get users to use Steam OS as their primary OS, many users will give it a solid go and we know how strong word of mouth can be under the right circumstances. But Valve would need to commit the big bucks if they want to make a dent to really get developers to commit to Linux and Steam OS. But I don't think they want to do that cause if they did, the Steam Machine would have been the perfect introduction if the price was cheap enough.

I tried to get more RAM before the price increases, but my motherboard/processor really didn't like running four sticks at high speeds, so yeah.

SALES/PLAYER COUNTS & DEALS

The deals at Steam are… Well, this is embarrassing. I got so excited with its Black Friday Sale that I didn’t check properly if there were other new sales as well. And there are, and a few. So here’s a summary of them:

Resident Evil 2 RE:ENHANCE V2.0 Mod Released — Massive Visual Upgrade Looks Incredible
https://www.dsogaming.com/pc-performance-analyses/resident-evil-2-reenhance-v2-0-mod-released-massive-visual-upgrade-looks-incredible/
Modder SonicB00M has spent over a year working on a new version of his RE: ENHANCE mod for Resident Evil 2. Today, he finally released Version 2.0, which brings big visual upgrades and major improvements to all the pre-rendered backgrounds.
As the modder noted, all the backgrounds look sharper and more detailed than ever. Moreover, countless small elements (like posters, signs, notice boards, and subtle wallpaper patterns) have been painstakingly recreated by hand and seamlessly integrated into the scenes.
SonicB00M has also redone the inventory and file icons. Furthermore, he improved many 3D models and door textures. Plus, there are newly upscaled effects for smoke, blood, fire, and more.
If you have the GOG version of Resident Evil 2, you can download this version of the mod. This is the easiest way to play RE2 with the RE: ENHANCE Mod. If, on the other hand, you already have the Seamless HD Project with the Classic Rebirth Patch installed, you can use this version.
It’s also worth noting that SonicB00M has released a mod that upscales all of the game’s FMV cutscenes. This mod is compatible with RE: ENHANCE. So, make sure to use both of them for the ultimate RE2 experience.

Hero modder who started the Thomas the Tank Engine meme with Skyrim thumbs his nose at 'legal threats' and 'black vans with the Mattel logo' by modding Thomas into Morrowind: 'I have issues with authority'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/hero-modder-trainwiz-who-started-the-thomas-the-tank-engine-meme-with-skyrim-thumbs-his-nose-at-legal-threats-and-black-vans-with-the-mattel-logo-by-modding-thomas-into-morrowind-i-have-issues-with-authority/
For many years now, the children's character Thomas the Tank Engine has been something of a modding phenomenon. You can find Thomas in everything from Hogwarts Legacy to Elden Ring, but it all began with a 2013 Skyrim mod that replaced all dragons with the resplendent blue engine, as well as adding sound effects from the show.
That Skyrim mod was down to game developer and modder Trainwiz (and friends), who notes in his Bluesky bio that "Mattel is out to kill me." This is because toy giant Mattel owns the rights to the Thomas the Tank Engine characters, and doesn't seem to have much of a sense of humour about Thomas mods. Thus, we arrive at a new frontier for Thomas-based heroics.
Trainwiz has popped up with a new mod for Morrowind that "replaces cliff racers with Thomas the Tank Engine." Cliff racers are flying creatures that appear all around the Vvardenfell region of Morrowind, and occasionally swarm the player. The reason that you can now get got by countless flying Thomases? Take it away Trainwiz:
"I am incapable of learning lessons whenever it involves corporations, because I fundamentally do not view toy company CEOs or media CEOs as people."
Expanding on this thought on the Nexusmods page, Trainwiz says "I sometimes feel like I need to milk a particular joke until its inevitable demise. I will do this no matter how many legal threats, actual threats, black vans with the Mattel logo on them, or severed Barbie heads are mailed to me."
>> The article has some screenshots of the mod, but it doesn’t have a link to the mod itself.

The second part of the Wednesday gaming news:

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 dev admits some damage buff combinations are 'already insane', but its latest patch deliberately opens 'a huge can of worms' by increasing the netcode cap anyway: 'for now, have fun'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/action/warhammer-40-000-space-marine-2-dev-admits-some-damage-buff-combinations-are-already-insane-but-its-latest-patch-deliberately-opens-a-huge-can-of-worms-by-increasing-the-netcode-cap-anyway-for-now-have-fun/
Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2 is well into its second year of updates at this point, with Saber Interactive having unveiled the roadmap for year two back in August. Patch 11 represents something of a palette cleanser between September's birthday feast and next year's Techmarine treat. But there's still plenty here for veteran Ultramarines to get their massive, armoured mitts on.

In a relatable bout of impostor syndrome, Clair Obscur actor Charlie Cox says please give all the credit to mocap actor Maxence Cazorla after he nabs a Game Awards nom

I'm beginning to think Charlie Cox—the voice of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's Gustave—has a case of impostor syndrome. It seems like just yesterday he was telling everyone he felt "like a total fraud" for all the praise he gets for his performance when he thinks he was only in the acting booth for four hours or so.
Now? Well, kind of the same thing again. As captured by the good folk at Posta Entretenimiento, Cox was recently asked how he felt about his Game Awards nomination for best performance, and almost immediately disavowed 95% of the credit.
>> The mocap actor, Maxence Cazorla, has thanked his words (link).

Another Fallout 4 update fixes performance issues while leaving modders angry, but it doesn't have to be this way
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fallout/another-fallout-4-update-fixes-performance-issues-while-leaving-modders-angry-but-it-doesnt-have-to-be-this-way/
Bethesda is celebrating a decade of Fallout 4 this month, and, as is Toddly tradition, has released yet another version of the Sole Survivor's wasteland journey. The Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition launched on November 10 as an all-encompassing collection of DLC and add-ons, but a related update to Fallout 4's Creation Club menu rolled out for everyone who owns the game and caused issues with certain existing mods.
Shortly after tanking Fallout 4's "very positive" review average on Steam, Bethesda said it was investigating reports of new bugs, performance issues, and crashes introduced with the Creations Menu Update that went out alongside the Anniversary Edition. The studio issued a hotfix on November 17 for its biggest troublemaker, Fallout 4's Creations Menu, and shared plans for more on November 24, followed by another update sometime in December.
Bethesda made good on some performance fixes last Friday, on November 21, when it published a follow up Steam blog with patch notes to address stability and crash issues. Though that's not the fix some modding diehards want, with threads on Reddit from players who sound like they'd rather the update just not exist to begin with. And there's still a trickle of negative Steam reviews rolling in.

Quantic Dream's upcoming MOBA is opening its doors for a closed beta weekend in just a couple of weeks, but only a few players will make the cut

Spellcasters Chronicles is Quantic Dream's upcoming action MOBA that sees teams of three pitted against one another alongside hordes of grunts and mythical creatures as they fight for dominion of the map. It's pretty cool, I had a great time with it in the preview, and now you can too, soon.

This fishing game awards bonus XP for no-scoping an airborne mackerel, and I think that's beautiful
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/sim/this-fishing-game-awards-bonus-xp-for-no-scoping-an-airborne-mackerel-and-i-think-thats-beautiful/
I've spent precious little time in my life with a line in the water, but I admire fishing in the abstract as an alignment of man and his environment through pelagic contemplation. Based on what I'm seeing from upcoming co-op angling game How to Fish, however, I've apparently missed some critical bits of the fishing equation. Bits like whipping a fish out of the water so you can quick-scope it in midair with a bolt-action rifle for bonus XP.

After splurging on EA, Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund is reportedly tightening its pursestrings, due to 'financial distress' caused by numerous troubled projects
https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/after-splurging-on-ea-saudi-arabias-public-investment-fund-is-reportedly-tightening-its-pursestrings-due-to-financial-distress-caused-by-numerous-troubled-projects/
Over the last few years Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund has become a significant presence in the games industry. It’s the owner of Monopoly Go creators Savvy Games Group, has stakes in Nintendo, Embracer Group, Capcom, and Take-Two, among many others, and most recently was involved in the $55 billion joint acquisition of Electronic Arts.
But all that spending may be catching up with the PIF, as a new report suggests that it is running low on cash for further investments. According to the New York Times (via GamesIndustry) the PIF is restricting operations under the eye of Crown Prince Mohammed, as numerous projects it has invested in are under "financial distress".

The first thing Bungie asked LucasFilm about its Star Wars-themed Destiny 2 expansion was: 'What is the bad version of this?'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/the-first-thing-bungie-asked-lucasfilm-about-its-star-wars-themed-destiny-2-expansion-was-what-is-the-bad-version-of-this/
You know the emergency lights are blinking at Bungie when the developer starts putting out balance changes with triple digit percent buffs in a bid to lure Destiny 2's dwindling playerbase back. That was the case with yesterday's ability tuning blog, which saw the Hunter class eating especially well. (About time too.) Today, attention turned to next week's Renegades launch, in the form of a live stream breaking down what to expect from the Star Wars-themed expansion.

Former Ghost of Yotei artist says she wasn't fired because of a Charlie Kirk joke, but 'because of a harassment campaign' that nobody at Sony or Sucker Punch bothered investigating

Former Sucker Punch artist Drew Harrison was fired by studio parent company Sony in September, just one day after posting a joke about the murder of high-profile alt-right provocateur Charlie Kirk. In a new interview with Aftermath, Harrison says the firing, which ended a career of nearly 10 years at Sucker Punch, came about not because of the joke, as Sucker Punch claimed, but because of the Gamergate-style harassment campaign that followed.
>> And now, a couple months later, nobody talks about Kirk anymore.

After its 'make FPS great again' controversy, Splitgate 2 is relaunching with a humbler tone: 'The goal is to grow over time, not aim for a massive splash on day 1'

Troubled team-based shooter Splitgate 2 is coming back earlier than expected: Rather than re-launching in 2026 as originally planned, developer 1047 Games says the beta servers will be taken offline on December 4, and a full-on re-release will follow later in the month.

Despite Krafton ownership, Last Epoch dev won't charge for its first expansion and isn't pivoting to AI: 'To be clear, our development approach is not changing'

In what seems to be the only good news related to publisher Krafton right now, the Last Epoch developer it bought in July hasn't been warped by its aggressive pivot to becoming an "AI-first company" above all else. At least not yet.

Yesterday was a mirage. Here is the third part of the gaming news:

The Battlefield 6 free trial is live, and if you're new to the scene EA has a detailed guide to get you started
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/the-battlefield-6-free-trial-is-live-and-if-youre-new-to-the-scene-ea-has-a-detailed-guide-to-get-you-started/
Electronic Arts announced last week that a free trial for Battlefield 6, "the best selling shooter of 2025" (a bold claim given that it's still ongoing), would get underway on November 25. Well, today is November 25, and yeah, you can probably see where I'm going with this. The Battlefield 6 free trial is live!
One thing interesting (and, I think, new) about the Battlefield 6 free trial is that you don't access it through Battlefield 6, as you might expect; if you hop around to the BF6 Steam page, you'll see there's no sort of "try me free!" option available.
Instead, you get to it through Battlefield Redsec, the battle royale mode, which is always free to play. But during the trial period, you'll also have access to three playlists, including a "casual multiplayer experience," across three maps: Siege of Cairo, Eastwood, and Blackwell Fields."

Valve responds as indie horror studio accuses Steam of 'censorship' for banning its game about nude human 'Horses' (Update)
https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/horror-game-maker-accuses-valve-of-censorship-after-its-game-about-nude-human-horses-is-rejected-by-steam-lawful-works-should-not-be-made-unreachable-by-a-monopolistic-storefronts-opaque-decisions/
On December 2, Italian game dev studio Santa Ragione will release Horses, a first-person horror adventure telling a story of "the burden of familial trauma and puritan values, the dynamics of totalitarian power, and the ethics of personal responsibility," using what the studio calls "grotesque, subversive imagery" of a ranch where nude human beings in horse masks are treated as animal livestock.
Prerelease demos of Horses have been honored at IndieCade, Day of the Devs, SXSW Sydney showcases, and SFMOMA exhibitions. But while it'll be available for $5 on Epic Games Store, GOG, Itch.io, and the Humble Store for $5, Santa Ragione says the launch of Horses will leave the studio at risk of closing—because in June 2023, after submitting the game for listing on Steam, Santa Ragione received an email from Valve saying Horses was banned from Steam for featuring "content that appears, in our judgment, to depict sexual conduct involving a minor."
Update: Reached for comment, Valve replied that its content review team "extensively" discussed in 2023 whether to reconsider its refusal to list Horses for sale on Steam, but ultimately held its decision. Valve's full statement reads: (...)

Embracer Group sells publisher Arc Games and Star Trek Online developer Cryptic Studios, but once again clings on to the publishing rights for Remnant 2

The games industry's biggest fire sale continues, as Embracer Group has sold Star Trek Online developer Cryptic Studio and publisher Arc Games, which also handled publishing duties for games like Remnant 2, Torchlight, and the recently released old-school MMO Fellowship.
The buyer is Project Golden Arc, which is owned and led by members of Arc Games' management. The deal—which is worth $30 million, has been financed by XD Inc, perhaps best known as the developer and publisher of the free-to-play Torchlight Infinite.

Call of Duty has been the biggest-selling shooter in the US since 2006, but that could soon change according to industry analyst: 'This part of the market hasn't been this competitive in 20 years'

Activision's camo-clad cash cow Call of Duty has ruled the shooter roost for almost 20 years in the US, consistently topping the charts for games involving guns since 2006. But according to games industry analyst Mat Piscatella, that might just change in 2025.

This year, however, things might turn out differently. While Piscatella says we "still have some big weeks of potential sales to come," he observes that "this part of the market hasn't been this competitive in 20 years."

22 years since launch, a classic Dungeons & Dragons adventure from the developer of Bloodlines is finally coming to Steam
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/22-years-since-launch-a-classic-dungeons-and-dragons-adventure-from-the-developer-of-bloodlines-is-finally-coming-to-steam/
Long defunct game developer Troika is best known today for the dark roleplaying masterpiece/dropped bag of spanners Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines. But the year before Bloodlines simultaneously spelled doom and immortality for the studio, Troika released The Temple of Elemental Evil, a similarly ambitious and similarly buggy adaptation of the Dungeon & Dragons scenario written by D&D's cocreators Gary Gygax and Frank Mentzer.
The Temple of Elemental Evil is fondly remembered by D&D fans for its meticulous adaptation of the scenario into the then newly released 3.5 edition. "It may not be the best D&D game, but it is the most D&D game," PC Gamer's Jody Macgregor wrote back in 2017. "Being alone at a computer isn't the same as sitting round a table shouting every time someone rolls a 20 or putting on a silly voice and making everyone laugh, but The Temple of Elemental Evil gets surprisingly close to recreating that atmosphere."
The RPG has been quietly kept alive by modders for years. But now, more than two decades after it launched, The Temple of Elemental Evil is getting a proper Steam release.

https://www.pcgamer.com/games/action/after-17-years-ubisoft-is-hiring-up-for-beyond-good-and-evil-2-a-definitely-real-videogame-that-exists/
Just one more heave, and I reckon Sisyphus will finally get that rock to the top of the mountain. Beyond Good and Evil 2—a videogame that I first got excited for when I was 14 years old (I am now 32)—inexplicably continues development. Not only that, but its team is hiring (via Eurogamer).
