Thursday gaming news, part two:

I've never been so happy to be wrong: Marvel Rivals has turned Gambit into a Strategist that's focused on utility rather than just healing
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/third-person-shooter/ive-never-been-so-happy-to-be-wrong-marvel-rivals-has-turned-gambit-into-a-strategist-thats-focused-on-utility-rather-than-just-healing/
I'll always be here asking for more heroes to be added to the roles of Strategist and Vanguard in Marvel Rivals. Don't get me wrong, I love a bit of Duelist, but after adding more DPS heroes than tanks and healers combined to the initial game, NetEase has been playing catch-up to even out the spread between the roles a bit more.
Even so, when I first heard the murmurings of Rogue and Gambit joining Marvel Rivals, I had already resigned myself to the fact that Gambit would probably be a Duelist and NetEase would try and push Rogue into a Vanguard or Strategist role as compensation. But I was wrong, and I couldn't be happier.
Gambit's official character reveal trailer is out, and with it comes the information that NetEase has assigned him to the role of Strategist. His primary fire can heal allies and damage enemies, like most hitscan Strategists. Other abilities include his ultimate, which boosts allies, providing them with a supercharged jump, health regen, and explosive attacks. Then there are his dashes and Bo staff attack that damages enemies and heals allies when smashing it into the ground, exactly like Overwatch 2's latest hero, Wuyang.

Someone's finally making a spiritual successor to Bully, but I wish it wasn't inspired by some of the worst comedies ever made
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/action/someones-finally-making-a-spiritual-successor-to-bully-but-i-wish-it-wasnt-inspired-by-some-of-the-worst-comedies-ever-made/
I'm surprised it's taken this long for someone to make a spiritual successor to Bully. Not only is it one of Rockstar's most fondly remembered games, but it's also the one least likely to get a sequel, except perhaps for Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis. So credit where it's due to Agefield High for finally identifying that niche, even if I'm not convinced by how it's going about filling it.
Set in 2002, Agefield High: Rock the School sees you play as Sam, a new student looking to make friends, win over his dream girl, and generally leave his mark on the school social hierarchy. Like Rockstar's 2006 game, Agefield High is set in a school campus and a surrounding slice of open-ended suburbia, with a day/night cycle and a school itinerary you can choose to follow or flaunt.

Bloodlines 2 just got a new roadmap with Christmas-themed goodies, as well things that probably should have been there from the start like an FOV slider and motion blur toggle
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/bloodlines-2-just-got-a-new-roadmap-with-christmas-themed-goodies-as-well-things-that-probably-should-have-been-there-from-the-start-like-an-fov-slider-and-motion-blur-toggle/
Vampire: The Masquerade — Bloodlines 2 was always going to be polarizing given the oddball legacy of its cult hit predecessor, but I didn't expect it to polarize in the precise way that it did. As PC Gamer online editor Fraser Brown said in his review, the "good, sometimes even great" bite 'em up "is a sequel in name only, and it never really enthusiastically embraces being an RPG." Regardless, developer The Chinese Room has begun updating the game with fixes and features as teased in a roadmap that debuted in a blog post today.

'We would rather cut off our own arms': Demonschool developers dispute Nexon CEO's claim that 'every game company is now using AI' in response to Arc Raiders backlash
https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/we-would-rather-cut-off-our-own-arms-demonschool-developers-dispute-nexon-ceos-claim-that-every-game-company-is-now-using-ai-in-response-to-arc-raiders-backlash/
Amid the news of an added duos mode and a new Helldivers 2-style community event, Arc Raiders has been dealing with some backlash. Embark Studios now has a track record of using generative AI for voice work in its games, first for The Finals and now for Arc Raiders, and it's causing no small amount of controversy.
The studio has been a tad flighty around the subject when it comes to Arc Raiders; the story seems to change every time someone asks. But recently the CEO of Embark's parent company Nexon, Junghun Lee, strongly defended the use of machine learning in game development, saying that "It's important to assume every game company is now using AI."
I've already given a list of all the reasons why I don't agree with the above and why I feel its framing is disingenuous. But now other developers are wading into the discourse and saying it straight: not all studios use generative AI.

CD Projekt Red was considered the 'ugly child' of CD Projekt as a whole before the first Witcher became a hit: 'They will never earn any money here'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/the-witcher/cd-projekt-red-was-considered-the-ugly-child-of-cd-projekt-as-a-whole-before-the-first-witcher-became-a-hit-they-will-never-earn-any-money-here/
CD Projekt is a game industry powerhouse. After 10 years we still can't get enough of The Witcher 3, which reached 50 million copies sold in 2023 and it has the world on tenterhooks in anticipation for The Witcher 4.
(...)
Mielniczuk said the seven years spent developing the first Witcher game came at great expense, financially and emotionally. "[CD Projekt Blue's] main business was publishing games, so a lot of people in CD Projekt Blue were really unhappy," Mielniczuk laughs. "[We were] like weird people [...] living in a cellar making some games, you know?" The assumptions were that "[CD Projekt Red] will never earn any money here" and that "This game, it's a total waste of time."

Responding to problems in a live-service game is like having a 'big clock,' says Battlefield 6 director: 'You measure and value your time to the player' so they know you're paying attention
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/responding-to-problems-in-a-live-service-game-is-like-having-a-big-clock-says-battlefield-6-director-you-measure-and-value-your-time-to-the-player-so-they-know-youre-paying-attention/
There was a brief, beautiful moment when everybody seemed happy with Battlefield 6. Sure, there was some grousing about map sizes and progression. But its return to modern-military gunplay with a big lick of destruction won over even the most cynical of multiplayer FPS heads.
But then its battle royale mode Redsec came out, and the live-service gears shrieked into motion with a disappointing new map and weekly challenges that mandated battle royale play, putting a decisive end to Battlefield 6's honeymoon period.
With BF Studios rushing to quell these issues as Steam reviews drop to Mixed, Battlefield 6's developers have also addressed the situation. Speaking to IGN, design director Justin Wiebe assured players that the studio is "always listening".

Rockstar faces legal action from UK union after firing more than 30 employees last week: 'We are confident that what we’ve seen here is plain and simple union busting'

Over half of Arc Raiders players on Steam have barely engaged with PvP, and 19% have never even killed another player
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/third-person-shooter/over-half-of-arc-raiders-players-on-steam-have-barely-engaged-with-pvp-and-19-percent-have-never-even-killed-another-player/
Yesterday, I was looting a cache in Arc Raiders when someone walked up and blasted me with a shotgun. I returned fire with my measly Kettle peashooter and somehow won the fight, which triggered a Steam achievement:
Unyielding: Knock out 10 raiders (42.3%)
I thought that couldn't possibly be right. Over 35 hours in Arc Raiders, and that was only my tenth time getting a lick in with PvP? But after thinking about it, yea, it lines up. I haven't shot anybody on sight since my first couple of raids, and my modest kill count is almost entirely self-defense—all except for one time I was playing with friends and they decided to be aggressors (not my finest moment). My experience playing solo has been so overwhelmingly chill that I've hardly had any problems with other raiders roaming the Rust Belt.
After examining the achievement closer, it turns out my situation isn't unusual. Just 42.3% of Steam players have the Unyielding achievement, meaning that over half (57.7%) of the PC player base is at least as pacifist as me.

Looks like it's Tencent's turn to start turning off the money faucet for Western studios, as Bloodhunt developer Sharkmob says layoffs are coming
https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/looks-like-its-tencents-turn-to-start-turning-off-the-money-faucet-for-western-studios-as-bloodhunt-developer-sharkmob-says-layoffs-are-coming/
Tencent-owned Swedish developer Sharkmob, which announced in October that the supernatural battle royale Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodhunt will be taken offline in April 2026, says it will lay off an unspecified number of employees as part of "planned changes to its organizational structure." The studio said Exoborne, the "tactical open world extraction shooter" announced during The Game Awards 2023, remains in development.
(...)
The layoffs at Sharkmob come less than two months after deep cuts at Funcom, also owned by Tencent, which included the outright closure of Metal: Hellsinger developer The Outsiders.

Arc Raiders devs just made the Stella Montis community event harder after players donated way more than expected: 'We had no idea all of you would be so altruistic'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/third-person-shooter/arc-raiders-devs-just-made-the-stella-montis-community-event-harder-after-players-donated-way-more-than-expected-we-had-no-idea-all-of-you-would-be-so-altruistic/
Arc Raiders' latest test for the community is a Helldivers 2-style event, which aims to bring players together to unlock the new map that's been waiting for us. To get to Stella Montis, the community first needs to bring heaps of resources to the table to help clear the tunnels and make a path.
It's a big first ask for all the players to complete, and Embark had no way of knowing how well the community would take to it but, apparently, we've surpassed their expectations: so much so that the devs have had to raise the bar for what is required to unlock Stella Montis.

Once Upon a Katamari announced the first two DLCs during the State of Play Japan stream on November 11, and to say I'm excited is a complete understatement. Even though these DLCs won't add any crazy new levels for you to roll around, they're just as exciting. My comment was more in line of "Hey, he got something right for once!", not to praise him or anything.

Also, the CPU in the Steam Machine will be more than fine as it will be the GPU that will be the bottleneck here. An 8-core one would have been a waste of resources and add unnecessary costs.

I mean, yeah. The GPU is garbage. Ideally I would have liked to have seen a Radeon RX 9060 8GB... Just for FSR4 and the massively improved RT performance.
Or even a cutdown RX 9060 8GB would have been better than the Radeon RX 6600/7400 level GPU.

We can't ignore the long term driver support issue either, AMD has already hinted it wants to depreciate older RDNA architectures rapidly... Making the RDNA3 GPU a bad choice.

But games that aren't super GPU bound like Cities Skylines, Civilization. I.E. RTS/TBS games, the extra CPU headroom would have been good... Maybe I am a CPU core snob, I haven't had anything less than 8-cores for 15 years now... Even AMD's handheld chips like the Z2 Extreme tend to have 8 cores now.

Not really a big problem since SteamOS is Linux and will use the RADV drivers that have better community support.

And who knows, if Valve got that FSR4 code during AMD's mistake, they may make their own driver with FSR4 enabled on this RDNA3 card.

At this point, I'd be surprised if there was't official FSR4 support for RDNA3. AMD has too many current products running tha architecture not to implement it. Especially since they already have a version that works. When's the FSR Redstone update dropping? I'd think it would rear it's head there.

Edit: It seems like Valve built this like Nintendo did the original Switch and they did with the original Steam Deck. The Steam Deck used an APU that AMD designed for MS Surface tablet and then MS backed out of the deal. So they got a great price on the chip. Nintendo got great deal on the Tegra X1 because Nvidia was looking to off load them. They look to have an old Hawkpoint APU with the iGPU disabled and 110w version of the 7600S. I know AMD thought they'd make more head way on the low in laptop space with RDNA3. It's why they went with a monolithic die.

Side note: I always thought AMD left too big of gap between Navi 32 and 33. 64 to 32CUs is too big a gulf IMO. I always thought they should have a 48CU die in between the two. There was only an 8CU gap between Navi 22 (40CUs) and Navi 23 (32 CUs).

Some brands are very quick when announcing new products:

Dbrand has teased a render of a Portal companion cube Steam Machine case, so you can... put a case around your case?
https://www.pcgamer.com/hardware/pc-cases/dbrand-has-teased-a-render-of-a-portal-companion-cube-steam-machine-case-so-you-can-put-a-case-around-your-case/

I found myself staring at this render of a Dbrand Portal companion cube case for Valve's newly-announced Steam Machine for far too long this morning. I mean, it could be a joke, right?

For a start, it's a render, and not a particularly good one at that. For a second, it appeared on Dbrand's site a day after the Steam Machine announcement, with zero details other than a sign up form for email notifications and a smattering of "coming 2026" text, which suggests it's an idea someone might have come up with on the spot.

However, The Shortcut says that Dbrand has already emailed about the case, and it really does appear to be in the works:

"After yesterday’s announcement of the Steam Machine, we asked our Industrial Design team the only sensible question: Can we turn this thing into a real-life Companion Cube?" said Dbrand.

"Yes. The answer is yes. Even after accounting for the removable faceplate and air intake requirements, we’re confident it’s fully viable."

New Fallout 4 Mod Adds Consequences For Clearing Its Dungeons
https://www.dsogaming.com/pc-performance-analyses/new-fallout-4-mod-adds-consequences-to-its-dungeons
Modder ‘Glitchfinder’ has released a new cool mod for Fallout 4. This mod adds consequences for clearing the game’s dungeons. As such, it can make Fallout 4’s world feel more real and retroactive than before. So, let’s take a closer look at it.
In the vanilla game, there wasn’t any consequence for clearing a dungeon. Nothing happens if you go to a raider base and clear it out. Despite lore to the contrary, the Gunners never do anything when you take out one of their units.
That’s what this mod tries to fix. Now, when you attack a dungeon, there is a chance for reinforcements to arrive from elsewhere. If you clear a dungeon, the faction that owned it may send a hit squad after you in retaliation. Moreover, their leaders will carry a note that tells you why they were sent after you.
Overall, this is a simple that cool mod that can make the game’s world feel more alive. Since it’s lore-friendly, I highly recommend trying it. You can go ahead and download it from this link.

Skyrim Mod gives new voices to NPCs by professional voice actors
https://www.dsogaming.com/pc-performance-analyses/skyrim-mod-gives-new-voices-to-npcs-by-professional-voice-actors
Skyrim fans, here is something really cool for you. Modder ‘spdude’ has released a new mod that gives new voices to some of the game’s NPCs by professional real voice actors.
Going into more details, Skyrim Revoiced introduces 8 new voice types for 48 NPCs across Skyrim. The mod covers over 5000+ lines of both vanilla and modded dialogue.
Skyrim Revoiced was made with compatibility in mind. Lines added by popular mods have also been fully voiced. For instance, the mod is compatible with Improved Innkeepers, Hunters Not Bandits, and Misc Dialogue Edits.
Skyrim Revoiced is said to be a long-term project. The goal is for every race and gender to have more unique voices. The modder has fired the actors to record the lines. And, since hiring voice actors is costly, there is no ETA on when its next version will come out.
You can go ahead and download the mod from this link. At the end of the article, you can also find a video for it. This video features the work of some of the voice actors who are featured in it.

Bethesda is 'actively investigating' the Fallout 4 problems that Bethesda caused with its latest Fallout 4 update
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/bethesda-is-actively-investigating-the-fallout-4-problems-that-bethesda-caused-with-its-latest-fallout-4-update/
Fallout 4's overall rating on Steam is "very positive" but its recent rating is "mixed," with user reviews languishing well under 50% positive. If you're wondering why, you can thank the recent Fallout 4 Creations Menu update.
Released earlier this month alongside the Creations Bundle (which is struggling under a "mostly negative" rating) to celebrate Fallout 4's 10th anniversary, the intent was to simplify the process of finding and accessing externally-developed content—the Creations in question. Instead, however, it made a rather big mess of things: breaking existing mods, introducing new bugs, and causing crashes and performance issues.
With Fallout fans decidedly unhappy about the whole thing, Bethesda now says it is "actively investigating" issues with the troublesome Fallout 4 update and Anniversary Edition, and that players "should now see faster load times of the Creations menu, game menu, and redemption of Creation Club items."

Deep Rock Galactic's roguelite spin-off is delayed, but in the meantime it's getting another season of new stuff including a 'tomb-like' biome

"Let's just get the bad out of the way: we have to postpone the launch of [Deep Rock Galactic:] Rogue Core to early Q2 2026," said Ghost Ship Games director Mikkel Martin Pedersen in a briefing earlier this week. It was a rip-the-band-aid-off opening for a presentation that quickly moved on to what Ghost Ship's doing in the meantime: launching a new season for Deep Rock Galactic, its first since 2024, while it continues work on the roguelite spin-off for next year.

FPS ship battler Wildgate has struggled to find players on Steam since launch, but its next update could give it a second chance
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/fps-ship-battler-wildgate-has-struggled-to-find-players-on-steam-since-launch-but-its-next-update-could-give-it-a-second-chance/
It's been rough watching the muted response to Wildgate over the last few months. While people on the subreddit study the Steam player numbers and offer armchair designer-style solutions, the actual developers have continued to work on improving the most abrasive parts of the game.
None of those updates, nor any price discounts, have been able to spark interest in players who either stopped playing or missed it entirely on the busy store pages of Steam. The Steam concurrents have dropped into the double digits and haven't had a noticeable uptick in several weeks.
Over the last few months, however, Moonshot Games has been preparing a major update that could give it a second chance. On November 19, the Emergence update will finally give new players a mode that helps onboard them to the intricacies of joining a crew and flying a space ship. It will also include a mode that cuts out all the looting and focuses on large-scale ship battles. And a new alien prospector will join the roster with the ability to revive teammates.

The Turnip Boy devs just announced a sudden left turn into horny territory: A dungeon crawler where you 'rizz up' monster girls

Romance is a perennial hot topic of RPGs. It was back when Mass Effect's steamy fade-to-black romances made the headlines on conservative news outlets, and it still is now that we've seen hair and hide of straight-up animal sex in Baldur's Gate 3, for better or worse. If you're looking for more virtual action in a decidedly high fantasy-themed package, you might have an unlikely savior on the way: Snoozy Kazoo, the team behind the Turnip Boy games.
Enter Rizz Dungeon: Skeleton Key to My Heart, a first-person dungeon crawler announced today. While it is not, to my eye, a sex game, and Turnip Boy was always irreverent at its heart, Rizz Dungeon is still a sheer enough left turn into hornyville to give this writer whiplash.

Uh oh: Ubisoft postpones its quarterly financial report at the last minute and halts stock trading
https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/uh-oh-ubisoft-postpones-its-quarterly-financial-report-at-the-last-minute-and-halts-stock-trading/
Well, this is a strange one. Just minutes before it was set to deliver its financial results for the first half of its 2025-26 fiscal year, Ubisoft mashed the brakes on the whole thing, postponing the release of its results to an unspecified future date. The company also requested that European exchange Euronext halt trading of the company's shares and bonds from November 14 until the publication of its results.

One of our favorite 4X games is holding an extra-long free weekend starting today
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/strategy/one-of-our-favorite-4x-games-is-holding-an-extra-long-free-weekend-starting-today/
I like strategy games, but they start to lose me as they grow increasingly complex to the point of near-impenetrability. That's largely kept me away from grand strategy and 4X games, which tend to offer the richest sandboxes to the most committed players, occasionally at the cost of accessibility to newcomers. The only series in the style that's truly won my heart is Age of Wonders, the fourth of which you can try for free this weekend until Monday, Nov. 17.
>> It will also be 50% off until the 26th.

World of Warcraft director 'doesn't expect blind faith' in its plans to unshackle the MMO from popular combat mods: 'We take none of this lightly'

As World of Warcraft's next expansion nears release, players are preparing for the first time in the MMO's history where combat mods, or addons, won't offer much help. The most popular ones simply won't work when Midnight arrives as part of Blizzard's plan to level the playing field for all players.
(...)
In a lengthy post about this new era of addon support, game director Ion Hazzikostas explains why any of this is happening now, what exactly is changing, and how things will move forward as the Midnight beta continues.

Rockstar is now under pressure from UK Parliament as protests grow and 220 employees demand fired workers be reinstated

Rockstar employees may be "scared, hurt, and feel uncertain" following the sudden dismissal of more than 30 people last week, but they're not so frightened that they're unwilling to speak out. The Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain says more than 200 workers at the company have signed a letter to senior management demanding the reinstatement of their fired colleagues.

For the third time this year, Crystal Dynamics is making layoffs: Nearly 30 people are being put out of work 'to optimize the continued development of our flagship Tomb Raider game'

For the third time this year, Tomb Raider studio Crystal Dynamics has laid off employees: The company announced today that it's making a "difficult but necessary" reorganization of its studios and team, and that as a result nearly 30 people will be put out of work.

'Do people even go to the main menu anymore in their games?' The Outer Worlds 2's player-roasting main menu was almost sunk by console gamer habits
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/do-people-even-go-to-the-main-menu-anymore-in-their-games-the-outer-worlds-2s-player-roasting-main-menu-was-almost-sunk-by-console-gamer-habits/
The Outer Worlds 2's main menu is the epitome of "Oh hey, that's neat!" All of your options are structured as a dialogue with an animatronic Moon Man, the in-game corporate mascot who serves as the series' own Vault Boy in real life.
Things get really interesting, though, when both he and the environment around him change based on where you're at in the game, as well as the choices you've made—I was delighted when I booted up the game and he roasted me for being a tryhard playing on the Very Hard difficulty setting.
