Oh! You thought three posts were going to be all? Ha! You fools.

'Liars must be punished': Dyping Escape looks creepy as hell, pitting you against a pair of eyes that seem to be taking over your PC
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/horror/liars-must-be-punished-dyping-escape-looks-creepy-as-hell-pitting-you-against-a-pair-of-eyes-that-seem-to-be-taking-over-your-pc/
Horror has always been a genre that pushes boundaries. It toys with our ideas of what a game can actually be. In Dyping Escape, rather than simply selecting conversation options from a drop down box, you have to type out predetermined responses. Sounds easy, but as the trailer in the PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct shows, things quickly unravel.

When you lose in this 'haunted board game', your builds become opponents for other players to fight asynchronously
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/board-games/when-you-lose-in-this-haunted-board-game-your-builds-become-opponents-for-other-players-to-fight-asynchronously/
There's nothing quite like setting up a custom, intricate hell maze in a level editor, sending it to friends, and watching as they trounce it with minimal effort. Turnbound, which debuted at today's PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct, is boxing up that unique brand of shame and delivering it to your door in the form of an asynchronous autobattler.

'Planet Earth is about to be recycled': Join Us is a multiplayer game about leading a cult into doomsday and, apparently, riding grizzly bears
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/survival-crafting/planet-earth-is-about-to-be-recycled-join-us-is-a-multiplayer-game-about-leading-a-cult-into-doomsday-and-apparently-riding-grizzly-bears/
A press release for Join Us, a multiplayer cult-shepherding game that debuted with a trailer at today's PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct, points out that "a cult leader with no followers is just a lonely weirdo." As a weirdo who considers himself both prolific and surrounded by my weird peers, I'm happy to put my skills to the test—even if that means riding around on a pig packing a minigun, which (this trailer has taught me) is what cult leaders do.

Demi and the Fractured Dream brings a Zelda-like action adventure game to PC with stylish combat and mysterious characters
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/adventure/demi-and-the-fractured-dream-brings-a-zelda-like-action-adventure-game-to-pc-with-stylish-combat-and-mysterious-characters/
Since Nintendo has yet to embrace PC gaming, it's up to games like Demi and the Fractured Dream to bring us some of that Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom magic.
In the trailer shown during today's PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct, we see a masked figure wake up in an old, ruined temple. A mysterious voice guides our hero to defeat the legendary Accursed Beasts. It's unmistakably inspired by the Zelda games, but it still has its own sense of style and place thanks to the wonderfully designed characters.

Create your band in People of Note, a turn-based RPG musical that feels like the Kpop Demon Hunters tie-in game I wished for
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/create-your-band-in-people-of-note-a-turn-based-rpg-musical-that-feels-like-the-kpop-demon-hunters-tie-in-game-i-wished-for/
If you watched the incredible KPop Demon Hunters and thought, "Damn, I wish there were a game of this," then allow me to introduce you to People of Note. It's incredibly serendipitous that this musical RPG has been announced so soon after the animated movie took over the world.

D-topia is about a city where 'life is curated by artificial intelligence to maximize happiness,' which actually sounds like something the tech industry is on the verge of pitching

Do you ever wonder how those utopian sci-fi societies in the movies are actually managed? Sure, everyone's needs are met and robots do all the cleaning, but what happens if a robot breaks down? Does another robot fix it? In D-topia, you play as a Facilitator who helps an AI run the perfect city.

New party game Task Time promises 'unlimited chaos' with over 500,000 task variations and the instruction to 'do what it takes' to win
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/new-party-game-task-time-promises-unlimited-chaos-with-over-500-000-task-variations-and-the-instruction-to-do-what-it-takes-to-win/
Does it ever feel like videogames just have you completing random tasks? In Task Time, that's the whole point. From developer ReadGraves, whose staff includes Fall Guys and Gang Beasts developers, comes a party game that promises more than 500,000 task variations for you and your friends to do.

Don't Lie is a freaky new horror game about a reclusive 'hikikomori' trapped in liminal spaces with terrifying hallucinations and so very many eyes

Do you ever feel a bit funny and then realize you've not left your apartment in five days? No, just me then?
Broken Lore: Don't Lie, a spin-off of the horror game Don't Watch, encapsulates that feeling and then some. It puts you in the shoes of Junko, an isolated young woman losing her grip on reality while in self-imposed isolation.

EA strikes a $55 billion deal to go private in a Saudi-backed buyout just a week before the launch of Battlefield 6

Electronic Arts has announced today that its plans to go private have gone ahead. A consortium that includes Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund and Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner's Affinity Partners, alongside the private equity firm Silver Lake, has snapped up EA in a $55 billion deal (via Reuters).

SALES/PLAYER COUNTS & DEALS

At GOG, yesterday’s surprise during its Anniversary Sale was the 2025MAGIC code. Since I forgot to check it yesterday, I don’t know if it’s a discount or a free game.

It's actually a discount for Master of Magic, both the original and the remake, plus their dlc. The code still works, just tried it now

MODS, EMULATORS & FAN PROJECTS

Play Five Super Mario 3D Games on PC With Ease
https://www.dsogaming.com/pc-performance-analyses/play-five-super-mario-3d-games-on-pc-with-ease
Super Mario fans, here is something for you today. YouTube’s ‘Largefriendly Lop’ has released Super Mario 3D All-Stars DELUXE, a project that allows you to play five Super Mario 3D games on PC with ease. This is a must-have for those who want to experience some of the modern-day Super Mario 3D games on PC.
Super Mario 3D All-Stars DELUXE is basically a pre-configured Dolphin emulator. What’s really great here is that the launcher makes it really easy to run these games on PC. All you have to do is drag and drop the ROM files of the Super Mario 3D games into the ROM folder. And that’s it. As soon as you do this, you will be able to run the launcher and load your favourite game.
Right now, Super Mario 3D All-Stars DELUXE supports five Super Mario 3D games. These are: Super Mario 64, Super Mario 3D Land, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy, and Super Mario Galaxy 2.
For those wondering, this project is not as advanced as Super Mario Bros. Remastered. Super Mario Bros. Remastered made a lot of changes to the classic 2D Super Mario games. At the same time, it did not feel like launching an emulator. Here, it’s obvious that we’re dealing with a Dolphin emulator. Not that this is a bad thing. Just make sure to keep your expectations in check.
You can go ahead and download Super Mario 3D All-Stars DELUXE from this link. Do note that this is only the launcher. You’ll also need the ROM files for the games. These are not included in Super Mario 3D All-Stars DELUXE.

Morrowind gets way easier to play on your Steam Deck or sofa thanks to a new OpenMW release candidate that's all about gamepads, baby
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/the-elder-scrolls/morrowind-gets-way-easier-to-play-on-your-steam-deck-or-sofa-thanks-to-a-new-openmw-release-candidate-thats-all-about-gamepads-baby/
Think fast, hotshot: after spending three years lovingly crafting July's 0.49 update, which dramatically buffed up its capacity to handle all-powerful lua modding, the crew at OpenMW have already turned around and put out their first candidate for its 0.50 release. In mod project timelines, this is basically a nanosecond turnaround.
If you're not familiar, OpenMW is an open-source engine reimplementation for The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind that lets you run it on modern Windows, Linux, and macOS with a minimum of fuss and at modern resolutions. It's undoubtedly my go-to way to play these days, especially now this 0.50 release candidate has made the game way easier to play on a gamepad.
(...)
"Despite the nice round number, 0.50.0 is a focused release," writes OpenMW's capo (that's their name, not their rank), "its core highlight is the improved gamepad support and optional gamepad-tailored UI (which you can enable in the launcher)." Alongside the gamepad additions, 0.50 also brings a "variety of UI fixes and game mechanics fixes" that even "a hard-boiled mouse and keyboard enthusiast" should appreciate.
"Our intention for the [release candidate] period is to have you break it—run into any uncaught crashes, freezes, regressions, or other unexpected issues, and report them to us on our issue tracker," says the team. "You may also suggest improvements to the gamepad UI, and some of your ideas may end up in the final release."
I've mucked around a little with OpenMW 0.50 RC1 and I'm already impressed. The UI—which still hews closer to Morrowind's PC UI than its Xbox variant—is pretty easy to navigate at the tap of a bumper or the swish of a stick, and the simple act of actually getting around Vvardenfell seems easier on a controller than ever before. I've tried using a gamepad with OpenMW before, alongside projects like Deckwind, but it's never felt this natural.

Terminator 2D: NO FATE has been delayed by almost a month due to US tariffs
https://www.dsogaming.com/news/terminator-2d-no-fate-has-been-delayed-almost-a-month-due-to-us-tariffs
Reef Entertainment has announced that Terminator 2D: NO FATE has been delayed by almost a month. According to the team, this delay is due to the recent US tariffs.
As Reef Entertainment stated, the ongoing global trade and tariff changes that delayed shipment of the components for the Day One and Collector’s Editions. Thus, the publisher decided to delay both the digital and physical versions. In other words, this delay has nothing to do with the game itself.

The Tuesday gaming news, part two:

Monster Hunter Wilds is the latest game to announce an 'End of support notice for Windows 10', as developers prepare for the final days of the soon-to-be-dead operating system
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/action/monster-hunter-wilds-is-the-latest-game-to-announce-an-end-of-support-notice-for-windows-10-as-developers-prepare-for-the-final-days-of-the-soon-to-be-dead-operating-system/
Did you know that there are just 15 days until the end of Windows 10 support? That gives you just over two weeks to make the move to the accursed Windows 11, whether that be simply pressing a button in settings or going to the horrid lengths of upgrading your PC so Windows 11 will actually work.
(...)
And now Monster Hunter Wilds, Monster Hunter Rise, and Monster Hunter: World are among the most recent games to announce that support for Windows 10 will end in the coming weeks.
"As of the same date, we will no longer guarantee that Monster Hunter: World, Monster Hunter Rise and Monster Hunter Wilds will run on Windows 10 systems," an official blog post explains.

If you're a House Flipper or PowerWash sicko you've gotta check out The Lift, a game about being a space-repairman in a spooky faux-Soviet research base
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/sim/if-youre-a-house-flipper-or-powerwash-sicko-youve-gotta-check-out-the-lift-a-game-about-being-a-space-repairman-in-a-spooky-faux-soviet-research-base/
It's odd, I think, that so few videogames focus on the tender process of repair. Restoration is satisfying in a way almost nothing else is. Taking something broken, shattered, discarded and, by careful work, returning it to purpose is inherently pleasing, like you're reinstating a tiny bit of order in the world.
(...)
I say all this to explain why I have absolutely lost my gourd screwing bench seats back together in The Lift: Supernatural Handyman Simulator, a kind of Alien: Isolation by way of PowerWash Simulator game that's currently open for playtesting. Drawing on influences like Monday Begins on Saturday (by the Strugatsky brothers, more well-known for Stalker influence Roadside Picnic), Prey, and, uh, House Flipper, The Lift puts you in the stompy rubberised shoes of a sci-fi repair guy.

Former BioWare lead writer reads the runes on EA-Saudi deal and speculates that 'guns and football' are in, 'gay stuff' is out, and the venerable RPG studio may be for the chop
https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/former-bioware-lead-writer-reads-the-runes-on-ea-saudi-deal-and-speculates-that-guns-and-football-are-in-gay-stuff-is-out-and-the-venerable-rpg-studio-may-be-for-the-chop/
The rumours have been swirling for a while, before today brought a major industry announcement: EA has struck a $55 billion deal to go private in a Saudi-backed buyout. It's the biggest leveraged buyout in history, meaning that the new EA is instantly saddled with $20 billion of debt, and will face intense pressure to crank those profits. And it's also the latest step in the Saudi Arabian Investment Fund's mission to "sportswash" the brutal regime, by using its influence and ubiquity across entertainment industries to distract from some of the world's most appalling human rights abuses.
As the crack team at PCG towers discussed the deal, one line stuck with me: "I wouldn't want to be sitting in a BioWare chair right now." The vibes around one of the all-time great RPG studios have not been good in recent years, and the fairly decent Dragon Age: The Veilguard didn't persuade anyone that the studio is capable of surpassing contemporary greats like Baldur's Gate 3 or Disco Elysium. Early this year, the studio was apparently cut to the bone in a round of layoffs, though a new Mass Effect game remains in development. For now.
Everyone who's ever loved a BioWare game, which is surely an awful lot of us, is probably feeling quite gloomy about the studio's prospects. And that extends to former BioWare leads, who're watching this acquisition and thinking pretty much what we're all thinking: It might not happen tomorrow, but this could be the death knell for the studio.

EA CEO says company values will 'remain unchanged' under the new ownership of Saudi Arabia and Jared Kushner's investment firm
https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/ea-ceo-says-company-values-will-remain-unchanged-under-the-new-ownership-of-saudi-arabia-and-jared-kushners-investment-firm/
Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson says the company's acquisition by a consortium made up of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, Jared Kushner's Affinity Partners investment firm, and private equity firm Silver Lake represents "a new era of opportunity," and that "our values and our commitment to players and fans around the world remain unchanged."
>> It’s EA, their values aren’t exactly something to be proud of.

2XKO is going offline for a few days to prep for its early access launch before returning with an utterly demonic Teemo
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fighting/2xko-is-going-offline-for-a-few-days-to-prep-for-its-early-access-launch-before-returning-with-an-utterly-demonic-teemo/
2XKO's closed beta seems to be going pretty well, with the tag fighter throwing open the doors to the masses on October 7. Despite executive producer Tom Cannon saying in July that "our goal is to keep the game up, online, and available" from the closed beta's launch, it seems that Riot needs just a few days to get everything straightened out.
A post on the 2XKO X account reads: "We need a little more time to get early access up and running, so we'll be shutting down closed beta a few days early on Oct 3 @ 9pm PT." Servers will be back up and running in time for the early access launch on October 7 at 8am PT/11am ET/4pm BST.

'We don't know if something's scary': Resident Evil Requiem director reveals the trials of creating the next scariest Resident Evil game, 'We talked ourselves down a little bit'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/resident-evil/we-dont-know-if-somethings-scary-resident-evil-requiem-director-reveals-the-trials-of-creating-the-next-scariest-resident-evil-game-we-talked-ourselves-down-a-little-bit/
We've been getting drip-fed Resident Evil Requiem information for a few months now, culminating in numerous Leon-centric fan theories, some absolutely terrifying hands-on sessions, and a better look into our new protagonist, Grace Ashcroft. The latest crumb being a new story trailer shown at TGS over the weekend.
(...)
But while I, and anyone else with a working amygdala, can see how terrifying Requiem is going to be, it turns out that the scares are kind of lost on the dev team. "We've made so many of these that we can't tell anymore until someone else plays it," director Koshi Nakanishi says (via IGN). "There was actually a bit of a worry internally before we showed the Resident Evil Requiem hands-off at SGF and the first hands-on at Gamescom, was this actually scary? Because we don't even know anymore.

Borderlands 4 dev clears up the difference between Skill Damage and Action Skill damage, and I feel like a combat log is in order so I didn't have to find this out on a Reddit thread
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/borderlands-4-dev-clears-up-the-difference-between-skill-damage-and-action-skill-damage-and-i-feel-like-a-combat-log-is-in-order-so-i-didnt-have-to-find-this-out-on-a-reddit-thread/
Borderlands 4 has a ton of possible builds to choose from—it's one of the strengths I highlighted in my Borderlands 4 review—but I do have one teensy-tiny complaint, and it's that I would like some of the tooltips to be a smidge more straightforward about what is what.
This feeling has returned full-force after seeing a developer kindly explaining the difference between Skill Damage and Action Skill damage on the game's subreddit (thanks, TheGamer), which probably isn't the place you should have to go for this sort of clarification.

Yakuza's all-new bonus Gaiden game was almost an mp4 bundled on the Kiwami 3 disc before RGG figured fans might wanna play it
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/action/yakuzas-all-new-bonus-gaiden-game-was-almost-an-mp4-bundled-on-the-kiwami-3-disc-before-rgg-figured-fans-might-wanna-play-it/
Perhaps the most surprising part of Yakuza Kiwami 3's announcement had nothing to do with Yakuza Kiwami 3. It was when Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio announced that, in addition to an up-rezzed redo of the third Yakuza, it was going to release an entire bonus Gaiden game as well: Dark Ties, starring Y3 bad guy Yoshitaka Mine.
I've played a little Dark Ties, and it's good fun going absolutely ham on the unsuspecting punks of Kamurocho as Mine, but there was almost a world where we would never have gotten to play him at all. RGG's original plan was for the Dark Ties' story to be, uh, basically a video they bundled onto the Kiwami 3 disc.

Summer Eternal, one of the most exciting studios to come out of the Disco Elysium fallout, will announce its first game exclusively through 'the analog medium' of a vinyl record and a book of art, essays, and dev diaries
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/summer-eternal-one-of-the-most-exciting-studios-to-come-out-of-the-disco-elysium-fallout-will-announce-its-first-game-exclusively-through-the-analog-medium-of-a-vinyl-record-and-a-book-of-art-essays-and-dev-diaries/
The "announcement of an announcement" has become an aggravating marketing trend in recent years, but this is the first one to actually get me excited: Summer Eternal, the embattled RPG studio and worker collective co-founded by former ZA/UM writers Argo Tuulik and Dora Klindžić, will offer the first details of its first game not through a press release or prerendered trailer, but a book of art, essays, and dev diaries shipping next summer.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is 'building toward the most advanced and robust anti-cheat', requiring players to enable Secure Boot for the beta
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/call-of-duty/call-of-duty-black-ops-7-is-building-toward-the-most-advanced-and-robust-anti-cheat-starting-with-requiring-players-to-enable-secure-boot-for-the-beta/
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7's beta is just days away, scheduled to kick off on October 2 for early access players (October 5 for everyone else) ahead of the game's official release on November 14. But before you get to jump in and check it out, Activision wants to make sure that you've got all your ducks in a row, and by ducks, I mean Secure Boot.

EA's new owners are leaning heavily on AI to make some money and its huge debt go away, which seems like one helluva gamble to me
https://www.pcgamer.com/hardware/eas-new-owners-are-leaning-heavily-on-ai-to-make-some-money-and-its-huge-debt-go-away-which-seems-like-one-helluva-gamble-to-me/
If corporate consolidation of one of the biggest entities in the video game industry by private equity, a Saudi Arabian investment fund, and a major investment firm doesn't signal a worrying future for EA, leveraging AI to further cut costs will do the trick.
The $55 billion required to buy out EA includes $20 billion worth of financing in the form of a loan from JPMorgan. Not paying back that loan could result in the closure of the gaming giant, like what happened with toy chain Toys R Us (via Los Angeles Times).
As reported by the Financial Times, the deal is reportedly betting big on AI cutting down operational cost for EA significantly. EA reportedly has not shouldered huge amounts of debt prior to now, and this could signal a change in business operations. It's not exactly stated how, but the Financial Times report claims that 'people involved in the transaction' suggest AI will boost profits for the company, which will then be used to pay that debt.
