We're near the peak in the clock speed/voltage curve due to increased parasitic capacitance between logic gates with further shrinks. Not saying that's what's happening here, just that it's plausible we'll be seeing this sort of thing become commonplace soon.

Also a PSA: Super Mario Wonder is available now to those who wish, erm, play it through alternate means.

That Super Mario Wonder trailer they recently showed with Bowser/Peach got the art community actin up.

That's been an issue for awhile, necessitating the need for dark silicon to insulate parts of the chip.

Good think he said desktop CPUs, as Ice Lake had an even bigger clock speed cut.

Though I'm still not sure if the sentence is true, as it would need to cut more than Core did compared to the Pentium 4. I mean, Intel went from the 3.8Ghz Pentium 4 to the 2.67Ghz Core 2 Duo, that's pretty much just 1/3 of the clock speed of it's predecessor.

That article on Sony listing PSN trophies for PC has me not surprised as to what they have planned and not stated for some years now.

I knew Sony wasn't going to come to PC without asking for something in return (despite them already asking for a lot of money per copy of each dated release, just to point that out), and it seems they now want to emulate MS's moves in enforcing a requirement for a platform account system. Difference between MS and Sony here is that MS has required XBL since they started combining the two on PC and console, and as such it has become naturally integral to MS and their PC/console side of things, but Sony on the other hand, even in the past, has not required nor enforced PSN network logins (I didn't need one for Planetside 2 for example and that was PS backed and designed).

They are only doing this now because they know MS has been accepted and that they are well aware EGS exists and requires it's own account system, as does Ubisoft, EA and Blizzard (though I imaginer Bnet's account system will be done away within the next 5 years and replaced slowly with XBL account migration, since they did this with Mojang's account system and that took upwards of a year and a half to fully migrate). The thing is, with the way things are currently operating on PC, not everyone is fond of being forcefully fragmented, or having to remember a load of logins or create multiple account systems, especially when it's all happening on a platform like Steam itself.

I know that if Sony are asking me for £65-70 for a dated release of an old game, and then ask me to also create an account I need to login with each time, then I am unlikely to accept those terms, because I am not benefitting from any of the suggested ideals they think are positive net gains for the consumer (I care little for cheevos and trophies as I grew older, since they are meaningless and provide nothing but a passive bragging right that nearly anyone else on the planet can earn and even then it's a system that's worth nothing tangibly and mentally).

I already grew tired of Ubisoft and EA peddling account crap for years, I'm not going to settle for another account system that has no objectively positive benefits and zero hindrance on my end, that also doesn't allow for more data harvesting. You either release on Steam/GoG with zero account systems that aren't MMO standard required, or you go home.

Also, if they so much as dare to implement the PSN account system on the games I purchased a few years back (which never stated any such changes to the EULA contract), I will be demanding refunds. I never once agreed to having games I purchased suddenly require a login. The last thing I need is another shitty system pinging home to another company and spamming me with "failed to connect to service/server", let alone a system that could fuck around with Steam's offline system (ppl said EoS wouldn't and yet it did, so excuse me for not having any faith in with anyone that isn't a network software technician has to say on that matter).

SALES /PLAYER COUNT & DEALS

Battlefield 2042 rode a free weekend and recent improvements to have a near-launch day player population on Steam
https://www.pcgamer.com/battlefield-2042-rode-a-free-weekend-and-recent-improvements-to-have-a-near-launch-day-player-population-on-steam/
EA's gambit to have a Battlefield 2042 free weekend as Modern Warfare 3 got its multiplayer beta seems to have paid off. First noted by PCGamesN, the multiplayer FPS, which was lambasted by fans when it launched in 2021, nearly matched its all-time peak player count on Steam—102,009 according to SteamDB, just shy of that 2021 high of 105,397.
It's an impressive showing from a shooter many had all but written off, but there's a lot to recommend 2042 at this late date aside from it having been temporarily free. Back in March, PCG's resident FPS aficionado, Morgan Park, found 2042 to be a redeemed shooter. The reintroduction of the Battlefield series' classes, new maps, and fresh Specialist roles all contributed to a vastly improved game.

MODS, EMULATORS & FAN PROJECTS

This Starfield Mod optimizes a large portion of the vanilla scripts
https://www.dsogaming.com/pc-performance-analyses/this-starfield-mod-optimizes-a-large-portion-of-the-vanilla-scripts/
Modder ‘Yeti’ has released a must-have mod for Starfield that optimizes a large portion of the vanilla scripts. This mod replaces slow functions with faster versions for a possible fps gain, thus we suggest downloading it if you own a low-tier or mid-tier PC system.
As the modder stated, in Starfield (and in all Bethesda games), when a script gets to the front of a queue that’s using a slow function and has to ask another script for information, it gets out of the queue to ask for the info and then goes to the back of the queue. This mod cuts down on how often they have to get back into the queue by having them have the correct info when they get to the front, making queues shorter.
>> As you'd expect from this type of mod, there are no screenshots nor videos of it.

Starfield Mod aims to improve 1134 individual textures of all Fauna/Creatures
https://www.dsogaming.com/pc-performance-analyses/starfield-mod-aims-to-improve-1134-individual-textures-of-all-fauna-creatures/
Modder ‘ThEjEsTeRoFeViL’ is currently working on an HD Texture Pack for Starfield that aims to improve 1134 individual textures for all of the game’s Fauna/Creatures.
Going into more details, this mod will overhaul/remaster all Fauna/Creatures, which are 318 in total. According to the modder, this will equate to 1134 individual textures.
The first version of this mod improves the textures of all the fauna bipeds. This includes Hammersaur, Bladedback, Dodo, Foxbat and more. All of these creatures have been updated to 2X resolution and max detail, along with better color, shading and lighting.
Now the good news is that once this project is complete, ThEjEsTeRoFeViL will upload an AIO file with all textures. Until then, you’ll have to download separate packs for each fauna type.
>> There is only 1 screenshot comparing a vanilla vs improved texture... and I have a hard time seeing the improvement.

New Forza Motorsport Mods fix 2D wheels, improve distant shadows and opponent liveries
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/new-forza-motorsport-mods-fix-2d-wheels-improve-distant-shadows-and-opponent-liveries/
Modder ‘Talal26’ has released a new mod for Forza Motorsport that improves the game’s distant shadows. This is a must-have mod for everyone as it can noticeably improve the game’s visuals.
In order to showcase the improved distant shadows, Talal26 shared the following screenshots. And, as you can see, the improved distant shadows can be easily noticed.
(...)
Speaking of Forza Motorsport mods, we also suggest taking a look at these other ones. This mod prevents the wheels from becoming 2D and changing color when driving. And then we have this mod that increases the resolution of opponent liveries in the game.
>> The article only has two before vs after comparison screenshots, both of the first mod.

This Bloodborne-inspired map in Minecraft will blow you away
https://www.dsogaming.com/pc-performance-analyses/this-bloodborne-inspired-map-in-minecraft-will-blow-you-away/
Environment artist Potomy has shared a number of screenshots and a video from a Bloodborne-inspired map in Minecraft that will blow you away.
This Bloodborne Remake in Minecraft looks absolutely amazing, and it’s by far one of the best custom maps we’ve seen. The attention to detail is extraordinary, and everything looks incredible. Potomy was also able to capture the game’s atmosphere, and we really have to congratulate the artist for that.
Now the downside here is that this map is behind a Patreon wall. The Bloodborne x Minecraft texture pack will cost you $41, and it will give you access to the actual map and its resource pack. Basically, it’s like purchasing a new game. In my opinion, you should stay away from it. Don’t get me wrong, this is one of the best recreations I’ve seen in Minecraft. However, its price is too high.
>> I'm sure the modder has spent a lot of time doing the map, but that price is insane. But well, at least there are screenshots and a roughly 5 minutes video of it.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage gets free DLSS 3 Frame Generation Mod
https://www.dsogaming.com/pc-performance-analyses/assassins-creed-mirage-gets-free-dlss-3-frame-generation-mod/
Earlier this month, we informed you about a DLSS 3 Frame Generation paid mod for Assassin’s Creed Mirage. And today, we are happy to report that a new free DLSS 3 Mod is currently available for it.
Created by LukeFZ, this mod enables DLSS Frame Generation in Assassin’s Creed: Mirage and adds a hotkey to Chromatic Aberration.
Assassin’s Creed Mirage supported DLSS 2 at launch. And, instead of simply adding support for DLSS 3 Frame Generation, this mod replaces the game’s native FSR2 implementation with DLSS along with implementing support for Frame Generation.
So, if you don’t plan to use DLSS 3 Frame Generation, we suggest staying away from this mod. After all, you can already enable DLSS 2 Super Resolution.
(...)
We should also note some issues we’ve encountered with this DLSS 3 Mod. For starters, we could not use the built-in benchmark with this mod as it was constantly crashing. The game would also crash upon loading a save. The only way we could make this mod work was by enabling it after loading a save.
Furthermore, we suggest sticking with the game’s default version of DLSS Super Resolution, version 2.3.1.0. During our tests, there were severe ghosting issues when using the latest 3.5.0 version.
>> The article has some screenshots where you can see the FPS increase in several locations.

New Cyberpunk 2077 Mod fixes skill progression rewards bug/glitch
https://www.dsogaming.com/pc-performance-analyses/new-cyberpunk-2077-mod-fixes-skill-progression-rewards-bug-glitch/
Earlier this month, CD Projekt RED released Patch 2.01 for Cyberpunk 2077. And, although that update resolved the most common issues players have encountered and improved overall performance on all platforms, it introduced a glitch that could prevent players from receiving 16 of the skill progression rewards. Thankfully, though, there is now a mod that addresses this bug/glitch issue.
Going into more details, Cyberpunk 2077’s Update 2.01 introduced a bug that prevented 16 of the skill progression rewards from applying when loading a save made with patch 2.01. Furthermore, there was another glitch that prevented skill rewards (for the exact level of your skill) from being applied on reload. This second glitch has been present in the game since version 2.0.
>> The article lists the affected rewards, but there are no screenshots nor videos of it.

There's finally a Baldur's Gate 3 mod that will let you play as a stinky little Goblin
https://www.pcgamer.com/theres-finally-a-baldurs-gate-3-mod-that-will-let-you-play-as-a-stinky-little-goblin/
Let's be real, the weird, vaguely villainous and nonhuman fantasy races in RPGs are the most fun way to play. Half-Orcs, Dragonborn, Tieflings, they're just more fun, especially in a game as reactive as Baldur's Gate 3. It's felt like only a matter of time until modders started opening up options for BG3's unplayable NPC races, and modder Tripsadin has implemented playable Goblins with their mod, Whispers of the Fey - Goblins Race.
The mod adds Goblins as a character creation option, with custom faces created by Tripsadin, and according to comments on the Nexus, the Goblins play nice with the vanilla game's armor sets too. Goblins get the pre-existing Fey Ancestry and Darkvision bonuses, and Tripsadin also implemented two special Goblin abilities from tabletop 5E Dungeons & Dragons.
>> There's no media showing the mod.

Unreal Engine 5-powered RTS, Empire of the Ants, gets first in-engine trailer
https://www.dsogaming.com/videotrailer-news/unreal-engine-5-powered-rts-empire-of-the-ants-gets-first-in-engine-trailer/
Microids has shared the first in-engine trailer for its upcoming Unreal Engine 5-powered RTS, Empire of the Ants. In this game, players will dive into the universe of the ants to live an epic adventure where they will have to help a colony prosper through tactical and strategical battles, in a microscopic world of epic proportions.

Lords of the Fallen Patch 1.1.191 released, disables DLSS 3 Frame Generation, full changelog
https://www.dsogaming.com/patches/lords-of-the-fallen-patch-1-1-191-released-disables-dlss-3-frame-generation-full-changelog/
Hexworks has released the first PC update for its latest Souls-like Unreal Engine 5-powered game, Lords of the Fallen. According to its changelog, Patch 1.1.191 will disable DLSS 3 Frame Generation for stability purposes.
As Hexworks stated:
“We have decided to temporarily deactivate Frame Generation until our collaboration with NVIDIA allows us to deliver more stable drivers. This action is intended to prevent the crashes that some players are experiencing with their brand-new 40 series GPUs.”

Lords of the Fallen Patch 1.1.193 fixes more crashes, allows you to manually enable DLSS 3 Frame Generation
https://www.dsogaming.com/patches/lords-of-the-fallen-patch-1-1-193-fixes-more-crashes-allows-you-to-manuall-enable-dlss-3-frame-generation/
Yesterday, Hexworks released the first post-launch update for Lords of the Fallen. And today, the team has released yet another one. Patch 1.1.193 for Lords of the Fallen fixes a number of crashes, and allows you to manually enable DLSS 3 Frame Generation.
In order to enable DLSS 3 Frame Generation, you’ll have to use the following launch option “-DLSSFG”. Once you do, the game will be, once again, using DLSS 3 Frame Generation on your RTX 40 series GPU.
>> This move could be because the performance of the game isn't homogeneous, with different people having different experiences with the game. This is one of the reason for its mixed reviews in Steam.

Monday news, part two:

Starfield players uncover some of the best XP farms in the game through obliterating cosmic wildlife: 'even in a video game this feels wrong'
https://www.pcgamer.com/starfield-players-uncover-some-of-the-best-xp-farms-in-the-game-through-obliterating-cosmic-wildlife-even-in-a-video-game-this-feels-wrong/
Good news, my friends: Starfield players have entirely abandoned human morality in their quest to invent the most effective methods of XP grinding possible, turning the game's rambling planetary plains into a kind of Victorian safari hunt. I'm discomfited, disturbed, and would quite like to unlock the manipulation ability, so might give this a try myself.

Even Counter-Strike's devs called this wonder-bug the 'Smooth Criminal' before they had to beat it
https://www.pcgamer.com/even-counter-strikes-devs-called-this-wonder-bug-the-smooth-criminal-before-they-had-to-beat-it/
"Release notes for today are up" began the fairly typical message from the Counter-Strike 2 dev team, before things take a turn: "Shamone." The world's greatest competitive shooter has in recent days been delighting players with a bug that has been christened the "Smooth Criminal", after Michael Jackson's dance moves that accompany the song of the same name, and feature exaggerated leaning postures. In-game players have been strafing and, thanks to this glitch, would sometimes appear to glide with the top half of their body leaning out in an odd manner: no doubt a thriller for them, but plain bad and dangerous for those on the receiving end.

WoW Classic Hardcore squad clutches a world-first clear of Naxxramas—after the heroic sacrifice of their guild leader
https://www.pcgamer.com/wow-classic-hardcore-squad-clutches-a-world-first-clear-of-naxxramasafter-the-heroic-sacrifice-of-their-guild-leader/
There's something about World of Warcraft Classic's Hardcore servers that just seems to generate good stories. Any other day, face planting in one of the game's hardest raids wouldn't be a blip on the radar—but here a single slip-up can cost you everything, elevating an already vicious encounter to a matter of life and death.

Microsoft mashes up Modern Warfare, Halo, Diablo, Starfield, and more in a genuinely weird trailer celebrating its Activision Blizzard takeover: 'This is home now'

Generally speaking, videogame trailers are a promotional, sometimes informative type of thing: "Here's our new game, here's what it looks like, here's when it comes out," and all that. But today we've got something different to share with you: A trailer celebrating Microsoft's $68 billion swallow-up of Activision Blizzard, which finally happened today following the long-awaited green light from the UK's Competition and Markets Authority.

Red Dead Online players get a trick but no treat, with the same DLC pass returning for the third Halloween in a row
https://www.pcgamer.com/red-dead-online-players-get-a-trick-but-no-treat-for-halloween-with-the-same-dlc-pass-theyve-had-for-the-past-three-years/
The relaunch of Red Dead Online as a standalone title in late 2020 was something of a false dawn for its ever-optimistic community. Rockstar maintains the title but has been in a cycle for several years of repeating content, and it could fairly be said that this playerbase has been surviving on rations ever since 2020. This led to one of the best in-game protests I've ever seen, where a ton of RDO players gathered together in summer 2020 dressed up as clowns to protest the lack of substantial updates.
Well, dust off those red noses and fetch the greasepaint: Rockstar has announced RDO will be receiving Halloween-themed content for the holiday period, called Halloween Pass 2, which was originally released for Halloween in 2021, and then repeated in 2022. It's fairly typical of RDO holiday event passes, consisting mainly of accessories themed around the event that players unlock by ranking up through 15 levels: blood-stained clothes, scary masks, skull lanterns, wicked-looking scissors… you get the idea.

The Lollipop Chainsaw remake is now just a Lollipop Chainsaw remaster, but that's apparently what the fans demanded
https://www.pcgamer.com/the-lollipop-chainsaw-remake-is-now-just-a-lollipop-chainsaw-remaster-but-thats-apparently-what-the-fans-demanded/
We learned in 2022 that Lollipop Chainsaw was back, although it wasn't clear what "back" meant until a few weeks later, when original producer Yoshimi Yasuda said that a "remake" of the game was in the works. But now it seems that fans might want to dial their expectations back a bit: Yosuda now says that Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP, as it was recently entitled, is not actually a remake, but a remaster.

Rocket League trading site founder will never 'build a product based on the decisions of another company' again after one decision from Epic puts him out of a job

Rocket League's player-to-player trading system will be turned off in December. For someone like me, the news comes as a mild disappointment—I got my favorite set of wheels in a trade with a friend, but I haven't used the feature in years—but for Berlin-based designer Laurids "Vicegold" Düllmann and a few others, the announcement means losing a job.

Sam Lake says Alan Wake 2 will get free DLC that is 'pretty significant'
https://www.pcgamer.com/sam-lake-says-alan-wake-2-will-get-free-dlc-that-is-pretty-significant/
Remedy's Garth Marenghi simulator Alan Wake was followed by two DLC episodes, The Signal and The Writer, which continued on from its climax. At EGX, Remedy's creative director Sam Lake confirmed that the upcoming sequel, Alan Wake 2, will also receive DLC—both paid and free—after its launch.

If you scream while playing Don't Scream you have to restart the game
https://www.pcgamer.com/if-you-scream-while-playing-dont-scream-you-have-to-restart-the-game/
Some games tell you everything you need to know in the title. Don't Starve is a classic example. It's a game about how you need to eat to live. Don't Scream is the same, only there's an added layer of challenge. It's a horror game where, if you scream in real life, the game starts over.
Of course, that means you need a microphone to play it. As Don't Scream's Steam page explains, "You must calibrate your microphone in-game so that every whimper, jump, or even a minor squeak is registered as a scream, increasing the challenge." That doesn't mean you can't make any noise—low talking is acceptable—but even a "quiet gasp" counts as a failure. "You could bypass calibration to shout through scares," the developers go on to explain, "but it'd spoil the thrill. For a genuine horror experience play as designed."

I'm kinda liking this badly translated action roguelike where you can wield an extra gun with your butt
https://www.pcgamer.com/im-kinda-liking-this-badly-translated-action-roguelike-where-you-can-wield-an-extra-gun-with-your-butt/
One weird demo out of the whole Steam Next Fest has charmed me, and for reasons I rarely get charmed by: It's delightfully janky, strange, referential, and crude. Apocalypse Party is certainly chasing the roguelike action trend, but it's so off-beat and willing to let you craft absurd combos to slaughter fantasy zombies and monsters that I ended up charmed instead of repulsed.

The developers of Indie RPG Inkbound will remove all the in-game monetization from it at the end of this month. Starting October 27, 2023, there will no longer be any battle pass or cosmetic shop inside Inkbound. They were already quite unobtrusive, but now they're going away entirely.

As my colleague, PCG senior editor Robin Valentine, pointed out in his seminal treatise against horniness in Baldur's Gate 3, "An adventuring party is basically like the Olympic Village, and we all know what goes on there." Your BG3 crew has this youthful vitality to it, but "youth" can mean very different things for Faerûn's fantasy races. Some spoilers for Shadowheart's Act 3 story ahead.

An upcoming incremental strategy clicker is taking on the civilization-building theme in an interesting way: Knowing that you're going to collapse, eventually, before starting over. Indie developer Ondrej Homola's game Microcivilization has you ascending through tiers of difficulty by building progressively larger civilizations before you either choose to—or are forced to—ascend, gaining currency to spend on bonuses for future runs.

Manage your inventory to PvP glory in the demo of autobattler Backpack Battles
https://www.pcgamer.com/manage-your-inventory-to-pvp-glory-in-the-demo-of-autobattler-backpack-battles/
My love of games where you play inventory Tetris is well-known. I do not make a secret of this. I like to snugly fit a health potion in beside my spare dagger and weird stuff I've picked up off the latest shopkeep or slain demon. I have also played perhaps too much Dota, and therefore I like it when two or more items become one, stronger item.
Backpack Battles delivers unto me just that. Plus, it's a twist on the PvP autobattler genre that lets you play asynchronous multiplayer against others as you build and inventory manage your way to victory. Each round you get money to purchase from the shop with before you go into combat against an opponent at the same level as you. Win or lose, you move forward, combine some items into new ones, gain HP, and make new purchases.

Here's a remarkably open-ended sci-fi RPG inspired by the classics

The indie RPG scene is basically solely responsible for keeping the torch of the old-school isometric RPG burning. (...)
So that's why I'm telling you about Space Wreck, which after a year or so on my radar is finally released. A lovingly animated, deeply complex and very interesting game, Space Wreck is about the length of a movie but offers wildly divergent ways to take on its many challenges in your character's quest to find just the precise gear they need to escape repair their broken spaceship and escape junkspace. There's a demo that goes right into the full game, if you want to try it out.

https://www.pcgamer.com/climate-activists-land-devastating-blow-against-big-oil-by-disrupting-minor-tekken-tournament/
The UK-based climate change group Just Stop Oil is often in the headlines for its large-scale marches and disruptive protests, most notably closing sections of the UK's busiest motorway, but this weekend its sights moved from civil disobedience to the fighting game community. A Tekken 7 event being held at EGX 2023 was targeted, during which three activists from the group invaded the stage during the tournament winner's final, before spraying orange paint on the big screen behind the competitors and on parts of the stage.
>> I honestly fail to see what they're trying to accomplish with these actions, other than annoying regular people.
