One thing that's been bugging me is this recent trend of RTS games revival but looking generally worse than their predecessors. First this happened with Age of Empires IV where, while technically it's far more advanced than AOE 2 DE, artistically, it looks like a cartoon and many aspects of it just doesn't look very pleasing.

So with the Company of Heroes 3 early access being released to people... We are in that exact same situation once again. Now I don't watch this person but I was linked to the video which I do think states the point pretty nicely:

Now the comparisons he makes aren't what I would call totally fair but remember that Company of Heroes 2 came out in 2013 while Company of Heroes 3 is a 2023 game. Yet in many aspects in the first few minutes of the video, you can see a stark difference in the art style. Honestly considering the gap between release dates, it shouldn't even be comparable but here we are. Even the sound stage is worse in the new one.

Sadly the only RTS game I'll be looking forward to will likely be Age of Mythology DE as the remastering team did a great job with AOE2 DE. But man, it's annoying to see how RTS games are still not being taken seriously to the point where, it's just better to play the old games.

Half the time I look at these remakes for RTS games or "revivals", and they mostly stem from studios that no longer contain vets that even made the originals, and the new staff are either too young or didn't care to really study the original source material.

Like who in their right mind thought "you know what AoE fans want?, mobile graphics and projectile physics being non existent" (also way less factions than AoE 2 originally had).

Also getting tired of seeing a new slew of RTS games trying to focus on "reviving" the Esports side of RTS, like bros, just let that cancerous shit die off, that's not what made RTS great/memorable (it was the cheesy dialogue/video clips and the campaign stories/missions).

Some folks have faith in that ex-Blizz team who are working their own RTS, but I've seen visuals of it's game via screens and I honestly think it's going to end up with a PVP focus and it already looks like it wants to grab that Esports crown.

Like is it really hard to ask for an RTS with a good memorable campaign and PVE/co-op content in 2023 and beyond?. It's like these studios want to go "See, we tried to revive RTS and you guys didn't like what we made, so we're gonna leave the genre once more!".

I just want RTS games like C&C/AoE/KKND/Supreme Comm/SC, that aren't Esports focused, don't have mobile looking graphics, less features and acting jank af. TBS and X4 games seem to be hitting their revival off without a hitch, why the fuck is RTS constantly stumbling every year or 3?.

Also, ngl, but that CoH game looks like gutter trash. it just looks like your typical first time indie foray into the genre. I know it's Early Access, but it just looks so mundane and watered down without it's old art style.

Clearly the graphics of the remastered versions are improved over the original and the legwork has been done with Ai and pathing and such. Final Fantasy VII Voice Over Mod, Echo-S, is now available for download
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/final-fantasy-vii-voice-over-mod-echo-s-is-now-available-for-download/
As promised, Tsunamods has released the voice over mod for the original 1997 version of Final Fantasy 7, Echo-S. This mod adds voices to every character in the game, and makes some changes to their dialogues.
Now what’s great here is that the mod is compatible with the amazing 7th Heaven Mod for FFVII. It should also be compatible with Final Fantasy 7 Remako HD Graphics Mod and the mod that updates all of its 3D models.
As said, this mod makes some changes to the dialogues. Thus, if you are an FF7 purist, you may not like these changes. I personally do not mind these changes, and – to be honest – I find some lines to be really funny. The voice quality is also top notch (especially for a mod).
>> There's a trailer of the mod.

New Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered Mods bring Tobey Maguire & Willem Dafoe
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/new-marvels-spider-man-remastered-mods-bring-tobey-maguire-william-dafoe/
Sam Raimi fans, here is something special for you today. Rezauddin Nur has released a cool mod for Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered that adds 5 Tobey Maguire outfits from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man movies.
In addition, modder ‘Princec23’ released a Willem Dafoe Mod for this game back in November 2022. And a bit earlier, NosbornGG released a mod based on the Human Spider outfit.
Do note that the Willem Dafoe Mod does not feature any facial animations. My guess is that the Tobey Maguire Mod also lacks facial animations. On the other hand, the Human Spider outfit does have them.
>> There's a couple of videos and some screenshots.

New The Witcher 3 Next-Gen Mod improves Ray Tracing, fixes shadows
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/new-the-witcher-3-next-gen-mod-improves-ray-tracing-fixes-shadows/
Modder ‘Debugger’ has released a new mod for The Witcher 3 Next-Gen that completely overhauls the game’s Ray Tracing graphics. According to the modder, this mod will bring the best RT visuals and fixes possible, and fixes the annoying RT shadows pop-in issue.
Going into more details, this mod fixes the self-shadows for all characters, and improves their quality. Moreover, it fixes the torch and lantern light shadows, as well as the local shadows.
Furthermore, this mod enable better ray tracing ambient occlusion, improves the draw distance for the RT reflections, and improves the RT lighting (both indoors and outdoors).
In short, this is a must-have mod for everyone that plays The Witcher 3 Next-Gen with Ray Tracing.
>> There's no video of the mod, only a couple screenshots showing a before and after.

https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/new-red-dead-redemption-2-mods-overhaul-the-textures-of-small-mammals-windows-curtains-and-shutters/
Modder ‘WickedHorseMan’ released two new mods for Red Dead Redemption 2 that overhaul a number of textures. WickedHorseMan has used AI techniques in order to upscale the following textures, meaning that the new ones retain the art style and aesthetics of the vanilla/original ones.
The first HD Texture Pack upscales some of the generic windows, curtains and shutters. The second HD Texture Pack overhauls all of the game’s small mammals. These are the Armadillo, Badger, Bat Beaver, Cat Chipmunk, Muskrat, Possum, Rabbit, Racoon, Rat, Skunk and Squirrel.

Harvest Festival 64 is the result of the 72–hour Ludum Dare game jam, made by German hobbyist developer Warrrkus with music by fellow solo game developer Modus Interactive.

Here's why a bunch of games, including Starfield, just changed release dates on Steam
https://www.pcgamer.com/heres-why-a-bunch-of-games-including-starfield-just-changed-release-dates-on-steam/
You may have noticed recently that Starfield's listed release date on Steam recently changed, from 2023—vague, but at least within a specific window—to "coming soon," which is vague and utterly without specificity. It was in fact just one of several games to have their launch dates rejiggered today: Others, visible on SteamDB, include Forspoken, Redfall, Ark 2, and Robocop: Rogue City.
The good news is that there's nothing to worry about. Well, probably nothing, anyway. You see, back in October 2022, Valve made a change to the way it handles release dates for upcoming games. (...)

Skull and Bones shows off new gameplay, and it’s still not very impressive

Just two days after delaying Skull and Bones yet again, this time into early 2023-24, Ubisoft has posted a new developer stream showcasing the oft-delayed pirate adventure's "narrative gameplay." The video takes players through an "investigation," described by narrative director Joel Jannise as "a way to tell a story through a series of steps."

Nvidia and Google come out against Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard buyout
https://www.pcgamer.com/nvidia-and-google-come-out-against-microsofts-activision-blizzard-buyout/
A new Bloomberg report says Microsoft is facing yet more opposition to its proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard, as Nvidia and Google have expressed their own concerns about the deal to the FTC.
Sources told the site that both companies said in comments to the FTC that the deal could give Microsoft an unfair advantage in cloud gaming, subscription-based gaming services, and mobile gaming. That supports the position taken by the FTC in its lawsuit to stop the deal, filed in December 2022 over concerns that Microsoft will use ownership of Activision Blizzard "to harm competition in multiple dynamic and fast-growing gaming markets."

Lost Ark players with inactive accounts caught by wave of bot bans
https://www.pcgamer.com/lost-ark-players-with-inactive-accounts-caught-by-wave-of-bot-bans/
Since shortly after its western release in February of 2022, Korean MMO Lost Ark has had a problem with gold-farming bots. (...)
Almost a year later, it's still an issue. January's ban wave was a significant one, with Amazon Games posting on the official forum that, "many players have noticed a drop off in the number of concurrent users displayed in Lost Ark's Steam stats. This change is the direct result of a roll out of a significant number of bot account bans, which utilized new and highly-effective tactics to target and remove bots from the game."
Those "new and highly-effective tactics" have apparently also caught up a large number of players who simply hadn't logged in for a while, resulting in a game ban that appears on their Steam profile.

This gnarly FPS with a rear view mirror wants you shooting backwards
https://www.pcgamer.com/this-gnarly-fps-with-a-rear-view-mirror-wants-you-shooting-backwards/
I was impressed by the trailers for Hellscreen, a boomer shooter with a striking teal and red color palette and unique twist—a "rear view mirror" in your top center screen showing what's going on behind you at any given time. But at the same time I thought "oh, that's a cool trick, but it's probably just a gimmick, right?" I decided to give Hellscreen's free demo from Realms Deep 2022 a try, see if it had anything else going on.
Hellscreen doesn't need anything else going on. The rear view mirror is what's going on.

Sovereign Syndicate is shaping up to be steampunk Disco Elysium

As our associate editor Tyler Colp recently put it, the fate of Disco Elysium 2 is uncertain, but other games might make up for it. One such potential plug for the Disco-shaped hole in our hearts is Sovereign Syndicate, a CRPG set in an alternate Victorian London. You can tell it's an alternate reality because the menu screen shows it's got zeppelins, as all alternate realities are required to have by law. The minotaur's a bit of a giveaway as well.

Awesome Games Done Quick 2023 wrapped up its array of weird and wonderful speedruns on Sunday following a week-long event. The charity's first event of the year saw lightning-fast playthroughs of games like Dark Souls 2, Neon White, and even an unreleased Steven Seagal beat-em-up on the SNES. My favourite thing about Games Done Quick is that fundraising is at the forefront, and Awesome Games Done Quick 2023 managed to raise a staggering $2,642,493 for the Prevent Cancer Foundation.

Iron Gate Studios has brought in the new year by outlining its plans for Valheim in 2023. The Viking survival sim launched in early access in February 2021 and, despite its high level of polish and hugely positive reception, remains in that state. The studio reckons the game will be finished once three biomes are included. The first is the Mistlands, the subject of last year's major update, and this year is going to be all about the Ashlands.

Get ready for cuteness overload: Stray, the game about a nice red cat doing cat stuff, is now doing a rad thing in the real world by raising money for various cat charities. America's Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) spoke to some of the individuals involved during a news segment, which can be viewed here, where publisher Annapurna's Jeff Legaspi says the idea of partnering with such organisations "was a bit of a no brainer for us".

  • Expected to completely replace SODIMM, starting at the 6400MT/s speed that SODIMM caps out at

  • Expected to be able to accommodate traditionally soldered LPDDR designs, probably starting with LPDDR6

I think an open source one would be a good starting point, as it could offer multiple sets of devs opportunities to adapt on the engine and give a good choice for what said devs could do with their own RTS.

Like we could have some RTS devs using that engine to produce scalable enviro damage, or other devs putting more focus on base destruction quality, stuff like what Battlefield Bad Company 2 did (while in RTS AoE 2-4 do this, but it's only an animation). I feel like having an engine be open source like that would also make it much more accessible, and thus give devs a better shot.

But it's been a trend for a long time... I think it's sad that we were once at such a high point with the genre, where we got banger after banger, the devs knew what we wanted and we got it in spades.

Fast forward to current day and like you said, we have to hope that the one RTS of the year be decent and not a sorely missed mark, to be forgotten in a few weeks.

I do strongly feel that devs should really be putting PVP RTS at the back of the line, seeing as how there aren't exactly millions of us to keep one RTS PVP community as strong as SC II once was (I still find that RTS by far, the most competitive and thriving of the entire genre, if we go by Korean/US population for the game and the official tourneys they held over the past 2 decades).

If we get a good RTS with decent visuals, good storytelling, memorable units and different strats to use (*cough*, turtling, bring it back pls), then I'm sure we'd see a rise in player counts for these new games, that can eventually be given athe option to do PVP second and thus form that other section of the RTS community, rather than devs focusing on making the PVP community the focus (because it dies off faster than those playing co-op/vs AI and those who want to replay story modes).

You may have forgotten about The Day Before by now. It was first announced in January 2021 as "an open-world MMO survival" game, and then in April of that year we got a 10-minute gameplay video. And that's really been it—nothing of substance has been heard about the game since.
That situation will soon change, though, as developer Fntastic says that it will reveal "raw gameplay footage" from The Day Before later this month.

Blizzard is blaming NetEase for its games going offline in China next week

In December we reported on how Chinese players were being prepared for the end of World of Warcraft, with Blizzard's 14-year publishing agreement with NetEase drawing to a close. All new sales of Blizzard games in the region have been suspended since late last year and, while Blizzard promised to find a solution for save transfers, the continued operation of its games requires finding a new Chinese publishing partner.
It now seems inevitable that Blizzard's games in China will cease to function on January 23 when its current deal runs out, after NetEase turned down a proposed six month extension under the existing terms. Blizzard China said on the Chinese microblogging site Weibo (via Reuters) that it had contacted NetEase last week about the extension, but been turned down.
