The long second part of the Monday news:
This Animal Crossing creepypasta game is perfect for Friday the 13th
https://www.pcgamer.com/this-animal-crossing-creepypasta-game-is-perfect-for-friday-the-13th/
It's officially Friday the 13th, a truly cursed day for anyone who believes in that sort of thing. What better way to slightly unsettle myself than by taking my lunch break to dive into what can only be described as a playable Animal Crossing creepypasta?
Harvest Festival 64 is the result of the 72–hour Ludum Dare game jam, made by German hobbyist developer Warrrkus with music by fellow solo game developer Modus Interactive.
Here's why a bunch of games, including Starfield, just changed release dates on Steam
https://www.pcgamer.com/heres-why-a-bunch-of-games-including-starfield-just-changed-release-dates-on-steam/
You may have noticed recently that Starfield's listed release date on Steam recently changed, from 2023—vague, but at least within a specific window—to "coming soon," which is vague and utterly without specificity. It was in fact just one of several games to have their launch dates rejiggered today: Others, visible on SteamDB, include Forspoken, Redfall, Ark 2, and Robocop: Rogue City.
The good news is that there's nothing to worry about. Well, probably nothing, anyway. You see, back in October 2022, Valve made a change to the way it handles release dates for upcoming games. (...)
Skull and Bones shows off new gameplay, and it’s still not very impressive
https://www.pcgamer.com/skull-and-bones-shows-off-new-gameplay-and-its-still-not-very-impressive/
Just two days after delaying Skull and Bones yet again, this time into early 2023-24, Ubisoft has posted a new developer stream showcasing the oft-delayed pirate adventure's "narrative gameplay." The video takes players through an "investigation," described by narrative director Joel Jannise as "a way to tell a story through a series of steps."

Valve has suffered the biggest asset leak in the company's history, after a series of asset repositories for its games from 2016 were released online. The games are Portal, Counter Strike: Source, Day of Defeat: Source, Half Life 2: Episodes 1 & 2, Half-Life 2 multiplayer, and Team Fortress 2.
Nvidia and Google come out against Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard buyout
https://www.pcgamer.com/nvidia-and-google-come-out-against-microsofts-activision-blizzard-buyout/
A new Bloomberg report says Microsoft is facing yet more opposition to its proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard, as Nvidia and Google have expressed their own concerns about the deal to the FTC.
Sources told the site that both companies said in comments to the FTC that the deal could give Microsoft an unfair advantage in cloud gaming, subscription-based gaming services, and mobile gaming. That supports the position taken by the FTC in its lawsuit to stop the deal, filed in December 2022 over concerns that Microsoft will use ownership of Activision Blizzard "to harm competition in multiple dynamic and fast-growing gaming markets."
>> An "unfair advantage" in cloud gaming, says the company that makes the hardware used for that cloud gaming, and mobile gaming, says the owner of Android and the Play Store. Yeah, sure...

DreadXP and developer Lovely Hellplace released a new dev diary for the early access RPG, Dread Delusion, on January 13. The video covers new quests, characters, locations, and combat tweaks, and joins a host of quality of life and content additions that have graced the game since its initial June 2022 launch.

Just one day after it came to light that Rick and Morty creator Justin Roiland was arrested on charges of domestic violence and false imprisonment in 2020, Kotaku revealed that the studio he founded, Squanch Games, was sued by a former employee over sexual harassment.

Lost Ark players with inactive accounts caught by wave of bot bans
https://www.pcgamer.com/lost-ark-players-with-inactive-accounts-caught-by-wave-of-bot-bans/
Since shortly after its western release in February of 2022, Korean MMO Lost Ark has had a problem with gold-farming bots. (...)
Almost a year later, it's still an issue. January's ban wave was a significant one, with Amazon Games posting on the official forum that, "many players have noticed a drop off in the number of concurrent users displayed in Lost Ark's Steam stats. This change is the direct result of a roll out of a significant number of bot account bans, which utilized new and highly-effective tactics to target and remove bots from the game."
Those "new and highly-effective tactics" have apparently also caught up a large number of players who simply hadn't logged in for a while, resulting in a game ban that appears on their Steam profile.
This gnarly FPS with a rear view mirror wants you shooting backwards
https://www.pcgamer.com/this-gnarly-fps-with-a-rear-view-mirror-wants-you-shooting-backwards/
I was impressed by the trailers for Hellscreen, a boomer shooter with a striking teal and red color palette and unique twist—a "rear view mirror" in your top center screen showing what's going on behind you at any given time. But at the same time I thought "oh, that's a cool trick, but it's probably just a gimmick, right?" I decided to give Hellscreen's free demo from Realms Deep 2022 a try, see if it had anything else going on.
Hellscreen doesn't need anything else going on. The rear view mirror is what's going on.
Sovereign Syndicate is shaping up to be steampunk Disco Elysium
https://www.pcgamer.com/sovereign-syndicate-is-shaping-up-to-be-steampunk-disco-elysium/
As our associate editor Tyler Colp recently put it, the fate of Disco Elysium 2 is uncertain, but other games might make up for it. One such potential plug for the Disco-shaped hole in our hearts is Sovereign Syndicate, a CRPG set in an alternate Victorian London. You can tell it's an alternate reality because the menu screen shows it's got zeppelins, as all alternate realities are required to have by law. The minotaur's a bit of a giveaway as well.
Awesome Games Done Quick 2023 raises over $2.6M for cancer charity
https://www.pcgamer.com/awesome-games-done-quick-2023-raises-over-dollar26m-for-cancer-charity/
Awesome Games Done Quick 2023 wrapped up its array of weird and wonderful speedruns on Sunday following a week-long event. The charity's first event of the year saw lightning-fast playthroughs of games like Dark Souls 2, Neon White, and even an unreleased Steven Seagal beat-em-up on the SNES. My favourite thing about Games Done Quick is that fundraising is at the forefront, and Awesome Games Done Quick 2023 managed to raise a staggering $2,642,493 for the Prevent Cancer Foundation.
Valheim's next biome is the land of the dead

Iron Gate Studios has brought in the new year by outlining its plans for Valheim in 2023. The Viking survival sim launched in early access in February 2021 and, despite its high level of polish and hugely positive reception, remains in that state. The studio reckons the game will be finished once three biomes are included. The first is the Mistlands, the subject of last year's major update, and this year is going to be all about the Ashlands.
Stray's raising money for real stray cats
https://www.pcgamer.com/strays-raising-money-for-real-strays/
Get ready for cuteness overload: Stray, the game about a nice red cat doing cat stuff, is now doing a rad thing in the real world by raising money for various cat charities. America's Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) spoke to some of the individuals involved during a news segment, which can be viewed here, where publisher Annapurna's Jeff Legaspi says the idea of partnering with such organisations "was a bit of a no brainer for us".
