One thing that's been bugging me is this recent trend of RTS games revival but looking generally worse than their predecessors. First this happened with Age of Empires IV where, while technically it's far more advanced than AOE 2 DE, artistically, it looks like a cartoon and many aspects of it just doesn't look very pleasing.

So with the Company of Heroes 3 early access being released to people... We are in that exact same situation once again. Now I don't watch this person but I was linked to the video which I do think states the point pretty nicely:

Now the comparisons he makes aren't what I would call totally fair but remember that Company of Heroes 2 came out in 2013 while Company of Heroes 3 is a 2023 game. Yet in many aspects in the first few minutes of the video, you can see a stark difference in the art style. Honestly considering the gap between release dates, it shouldn't even be comparable but here we are. Even the sound stage is worse in the new one.

Sadly the only RTS game I'll be looking forward to will likely be Age of Mythology DE as the remastering team did a great job with AOE2 DE. But man, it's annoying to see how RTS games are still not being taken seriously to the point where, it's just better to play the old games.

Half the time I look at these remakes for RTS games or "revivals", and they mostly stem from studios that no longer contain vets that even made the originals, and the new staff are either too young or didn't care to really study the original source material.

Like who in their right mind thought "you know what AoE fans want?, mobile graphics and projectile physics being non existent" (also way less factions than AoE 2 originally had).

Also getting tired of seeing a new slew of RTS games trying to focus on "reviving" the Esports side of RTS, like bros, just let that cancerous shit die off, that's not what made RTS great/memorable (it was the cheesy dialogue/video clips and the campaign stories/missions).

Some folks have faith in that ex-Blizz team who are working their own RTS, but I've seen visuals of it's game via screens and I honestly think it's going to end up with a PVP focus and it already looks like it wants to grab that Esports crown.

Like is it really hard to ask for an RTS with a good memorable campaign and PVE/co-op content in 2023 and beyond?. It's like these studios want to go "See, we tried to revive RTS and you guys didn't like what we made, so we're gonna leave the genre once more!".

I just want RTS games like C&C/AoE/KKND/Supreme Comm/SC, that aren't Esports focused, don't have mobile looking graphics, less features and acting jank af. TBS and X4 games seem to be hitting their revival off without a hitch, why the fuck is RTS constantly stumbling every year or 3?.

Also, ngl, but that CoH game looks like gutter trash. it just looks like your typical first time indie foray into the genre. I know it's Early Access, but it just looks so mundane and watered down without it's old art style.

What I don't get is why they don't use the remastered version as a base. Clearly the graphics of the remastered versions are improved over the original and the legwork has been done with Ai and pathing and such. Would it be too difficult just for AoE to use say AOE 3 DE as a base and make the next game from there with some touch ups?

But I think what we need is a open source RTS engine. I think building a game from group up with all the quirks that come into play with RTS is something that a lot of devs are not used to as the genre is not exactly very active in development. So if someone can invent an engine that has the legwork already done and make it open source, then maybe there will be a good future.
