Pairing a 4090 with one of Gigabyte's infamous PSUs is the closest you can get to literally playing with fire on PC hardware, even though those PSUs will likely be new ones without the problems that made them (in)famous. Hopefully.

This $50 peripheral lets you plug and play Game Boy cartridges on your Steam Deck
https://www.pcgamer.com/this-dollar50-peripheral-lets-you-plug-and-play-gameboy-cartridges-on-your-steam-deck/

Epilogue, manufacturer of the Game Boy emulation tool GB Operator, has revealed that the peripheral now works on the Steam Deck . With the Operator, you can effectively play your Game Boy (original through Advance) cartridges directly on your Deck via the dongle.

The GB Operator has been available since August of 2021, and was originally designed to work on any PC running Windows, Linux, or MacOS—this specific Steam Deck config naturally has a higher buy-in cost. The Operator builds on the open-source mGBA emulator, as opposed to the hardware-level FPGA solution you see in the Analogue Pocket or the MiSTer

NVIDIA GeForce 522.25 Driver Analysis - Gains for all Generations

https://www.techpowerup.com/review/nvidia-geforce-522-25-driver-analysis/28.html

While Nvidia themselves only highlighted improvements for 30 series, the driver in fact increases performance for all their supported GPU generations including Pascal:

Some games are bigger improvement than others. In rare instances, there's a performance decrease but that is being worked out.

In games like Asscreed where AMD was well ahead in the past, Nvidia is now ahead:

Learn how to run VR flight sims and win a Pimax 8k headset
https://www.pcgamer.com/learn-how-to-run-vr-flight-sims-and-win-a-pimax-8k-headset/
As is true of most things in life, PC gaming is a wondrous spectrum of different interests and hobbies. Among the most intense of which can be the simulation crowd, always looking to emulate real experiences as closely as possible on PC hardware. Flight simulators, like the ever popular Microsoft Flight Simulator are among the most impressive out there, complete with fantastic rigs featuring realistic control configurations like the Thrustmaster TCA Yoke Pack officially licensed by Boeing.
Combining these impressive setups with VR is often the next step for many seeking a bit of added realism to their flights of fancy. The Flight Simulator Association states that 15% of simmers are incorporating VR in their flying experience as of December last year. But it's also a lot of kit to get used to and understand. Thankfully, when it comes to flight sims and enthusiasts seeking the best experiences around, the community is rich and ready to help.
To help with this, the Flight Simulator Association and Pimax, makers of some of the most bonkers VR headsets we've seen, are hosting a webinar to help get people involved in simming in VR. It's happening live on the 27th of October at 2130-2230 UTC, where prizes and tonnes of information will be on offer.

Roblox says it had over 1.7 billion users last month
https://www.pcgamer.com/roblox-says-it-had-over-17-billion-users-last-month/
Every so often, Roblox releases some numbers and you remember just how massive it is. We all know the platform is huge among a younger demographic but the last time I wrote about the numbers in February this year, they were so big the only comparison that made sense was Canada. No wonder the CEO looks set to pocket $234 million over the next five years.
As a public company Roblox regularly issues metrics, and has just done so for September. We're gonna need a bigger comparison country because the daily active user count for the game has now hit 57.8 million, which marks an incredible 23% rise year-over-year. Other games are not as forthcoming with such numbers but this easily outstrips Minecraft (140 million monthly users), Fortnite (where numbers peak at 10-15 million whenever the game hosts one of its big live events), and the whole League of Legends franchise (180 million monthly users, as of October 2021) .
This is complete beermat maths, so don't go citing it, but based on these figures and a 30 day month Roblox would have 1.734 billion users and all those other games combined would be about 400 million.

Valheim gets an HD Texture Pack that is compatible with version 0.211.9
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/valheim-gets-an-hd-texture-pack-that-is-compatible-with-version-0-211-9/
MrFisse has released a new HD Texture Pack for Valheim that is compatible with version 0.211.9. This pack is basically a special version of HD Valheim from DJAurelius and zJIoDeI, that works with the game’s latest version.
HD Valheim appears to be a promising overhaul graphics mod for the game. The modders have used original HD textures to replace vanilla textures (for also both diffuse and normals). Additionally, they have patched a number of graphical bugs.
Future versions of HD Valheim will introduce better meshes, more polygons and smoother models. Moreover, the modders aim to add some performance tweaks.

Someone's reverse-engineered Perfect Dark for N64 and made a PC port possible
https://www.pcgamer.com/someones-reverse-engineered-perfect-dark-for-n64-and-made-a-pc-port-possible/
It's been quite a year for Nintendo games on PC. We've had an unofficial port of Ocarina of Time, a full decompilation of A Link to the Past, and now a coder called Ryan Dwyer has gone and reverse-engineered the original Nintendo 64 Perfect Dark. Pretty soon I won't feel the need to own any consoles at all.
The decompilation is available right now on Dwyer's GitHub page, and it opens up all sorts of new possibilities for tinkering with Perfect Dark on PC. Now that the game's been reverse-engineered, future tech wizards could do anything from modding the game, to creating entire unofficial PC ports.
Before you castigate me for drawing the baleful eye of Nintendo's lawyers, it should be noted that the decompilation—and a hypothetical PC port project resulting from it—would be technically legal (the best kind). If you wanted to use the decompilation to play Perfect Dark on PC, you'd need to provide your own ROM with all the game's copyrighted material on it. This is why the Zelda projects mentioned up top haven't been DMCA'd into oblivion, too.

Riot Games acquires a Wargaming studio to help with live game development
https://www.pcgamer.com/riot-games-acquires-a-wargaming-studio-to-help-with-live-game-development/
In a move that it says will help "accelerate the development of live games," League of Legends developer Riot Games has announced that it is the proud new owner of Australian studio Wargaming Sydney.
The studio was founded in 2002 as BigWorld Technology, and gained fame as the creator of the BigWorld toolset used in more than 30 MMOs and online games. It was acquired by Wargaming in 2012 and worked on that company's military MMOs: World of Tanks, World of Warships, and World of Warplanes. Following this acquisition, it will be renamed again, to Riot Sydney, and will work to support League of Legends, Valorant, and Riot tech teams.

Overwatch 2's weekly coin rewards are insultingly low
https://www.pcgamer.com/overwatch-2s-weekly-coin-rewards-are-insultingly-low/
Blizzard has completely upended how buying stuff works in Overwatch 2, and the transition has not been smooth. The hero shooter's switch to free-to-play coincides with its move away from loot boxes to battle passes and a cosmetic shop that only accepts a new paid currency: Overwatch Coins. For a studio that used to give away loot boxes at a breezy pace, Blizzard is being incredibly stingy with its premium currency.

Splinter Cell remake director leaves Ubisoft

The people yearn to truck. That's my main takeaway from a 10-year anniversary post on the SCS Software blog announcing that Euro Truck Simulator 2 has sold over 13 million copies and 80 million DLCs—in the form of cosmetic packs and major expansions—since it came out on October 18, 2012. To mark the game's phenomenal and unexpected success, SCS is organising an in-game trucking competition and spoke a little about plans for the game's future.

Fortnite is giving you a fortnight to live out your werewolf fantasies

Fortnite's getting furry. Wait, no, not like that. It's part of the game's Halloween Fortnitemares event, and it means players in Epic's empire will soon be able to transform themselves into werewolves, lending them new, lycanthropic abilities in the form of claws and heightened senses. Also, an NPC called DJ Lyka will be throwing shapes in the church of dance at the spot where you transform, because this is still Fortnite.

New World is getting 'Fresh Start Worlds' in November
https://www.pcgamer.com/new-world-is-getting-fresh-start-worlds-in-november/
"Fresh start servers" are designed to give players a chance to sample MMOs when they were—you guessed it—fresh and new and not overcrowded and overrun by max-level players and all their stuff. Blizzard, for instance, announced earlier this year that World of Warcraft Classic's Wrath of the Lich King expansion would launch with fresh servers, where all players would start with new characters at level 1. Starting in November, players of Amazon's New World will have the same opportunity when Fresh Start Worlds for that game go live.

I'm glad ETS2 has that demo, otherwise I wouldn't have bought it. It's a good game to relax and de-stress.

Yikes! Blizzard is trying hard to milk its base. But we'll see how things go. The game started with problem but with great success with those 25 million players, but retaining them will be hard if they don't loose it up a bit.
