Doom and Quake are being cleaned up for newcomers in time for QuakeCon
https://www.pcgamer.com/doom-and-quake-are-being-cleaned-up-for-newcomers-in-time-for-quakecon/
Id Software has been quietly working on making its Steam library of old games less of a confusing sprawl. Starting yesterday, the company has begun consolidating the various versions, expansions, and mission packs of the older Doom and Quake games into single packages "so that newcomers have an easier time".

This... might actually not be bad. All Doom 3 games, including BFG Edition, have been combined to one product simply called Doom 3... and it costs only 10€, which is less than BFG Edition used to cost. And all previous owners of the original Doom 3 got a free upgrade to the new product containing BFG Edition! In other news, I'm now a happy owner of Doom 3 on Steam, for the low price of £1 (on Gamesplanet), so now I have BFG Edition on PC as well.

The bad thing about this is that what used to take up only a few gigabytes is now 11 GB, which, while not that bad, is still something that's not as easy to just leave there when you have to clean up to make room for a new game. In case you were wondering, installing what's now called Doom 3 installs 1) the original 2) the Resurrection of Evil expansion, and 3) BFG Edition, so you can't install them separately. (The same goes for the old Doom games, but who cares about a few megabytes?)

Too many editions of a game can be confusing, specially to those that haven't followed the story and may not know the differences between versions. Having them all together in a single package is the right thing to do.

And well, a few extra GB aren0t much of a problem for all the free stuff you've gotten, right?

Please excuse my bad English.

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

£1 here on Gamesplanet. Not sure if just European code only.. but works in the UK. Can get some other old games on there for super cheap as well. The newer ones not so much.

Wanted to try it out since I haven't played D3 before lol. Also, can confirm you get the original as well as BFG editions on separate downloads as well as the expansion.

SALES /PLAYER COUNT & DEALS

Fanatical has three new deals:

SOFTWARE & DRIVERS

Unreal Engine 5.1 detailed, will attempt to fix shader compilation stutters
https://www.dsogaming.com/news/unreal-engine-5-1-detailed-will-aim-to-fix-shader-compilation-stutters/
Epic Games has detailed the key features of the brand new iteration of Unreal Engine 5, Unreal Engine 5.1. According to the dev team, Unreal Engine 5.1 will bring numerous Nanite and Lumen improvements. Moreover, it will attempt to fix the annoying shader compilation stutters we’ve seen in a lot of Unreal Engine 4 games.

Game engine developer Unity signs lucrative contract with US Defence
https://www.pcgamer.com/game-engine-developer-unity-signs-lucrative-contract-with-us-defence/
Software development company Unity, creator of the popular game engine of the same name, has signed a major contract with the US government to provide its digital simulation technology for defence purposes.
As reported by Bloomberg, the company announced the three year, multi-million dollar deal earlier this week. The contract is in partnership with CACI International Inc., an information technology firm that has previously provided military intelligence, including aerial surveillance, to the US government.
>> I wonder if this will affect in any way the offer to buy Unity from that Adware company. After all, I doubt any army will want to use a software that spies you.

MODS, EMULATORS & FAN PROJECTS

Suffer in style with this mod that brings Devil May Cry combat to Dark Souls 3
https://www.pcgamer.com/devil-may-cry-dark-souls-3-mod/
Dark Souls 3 is a bit of a drag, right? It's all foreboding this, doomsaying that, and long stretches of grey sky that terminate in wan, dispirited horizons. I bet not a single one of its gibbering inhabitants has ever done anything cool like smoke and ride a motorcycle. They're all too busy picking through the ashes of a dead kingdom and feeling sorry for themselves.
Well, no longer. Dark Souls 3 May Cry—released in March by a creator named Shigu—finally does the necessary if unobvious task of importing Devil May Cry's Dante into Lothric, along with his weapons and moveset. The work that's been done to the game's standard animations is pretty impressive: Dante transitions from the standard moveset of DS3's combat into the frenzied staccato of DMC's leaps and stabs without missing a beat.

This Undertale mod adds local co-op, but playing online requires some extra work
https://www.pcgamer.com/this-undertale-mod-adds-local-co-op-but-playing-online-requires-some-extra-work/
Originally released in 2019, Moddb user Depa31's Undertale Together allows two players to complete the entirety of Toby Fox's 2015 indie adventure, well, together. With help from a remote desktop tool like Parsec, it can effectively offer online co-op as well.
The mod itself is a pretty simple tweak to a lean game—you're able to name two players at the start and select overworld and battle sprites for the second player. One character is controlled by the arrow keys, and the other with WASD. Installation is an absolute breeze, with a .exe installer taking care of things in seconds.

Mod makes Halo's Master Chief into a Yakuza enforcer
https://www.pcgamer.com/mod-makes-halos-master-chief-into-a-yakuza-enforcer/
1980s Tokyo—the glitz, the glamor, the excesses of the postwar economic miracle, the… genetically enhanced super soldier from 2551?
Modder Kashiiera over on Nexus Mods has traded one gaming sex symbol for another, replacing Yakuza 0's sensitive hunk Kiryu with Halo's sensitive hunk, Master Chief Petty Officer John 117. Thanks to a simple model swap, you can now rough up thugs, teach important life lessons, and unravel the mystery of the Empty Lot as a 7-foot-tall, one-ton killing machine from the 26th century.

Friday news 2:

Tower of Fantasy apologizes for long launch day server queues with freebies for all
https://www.pcgamer.com/tower-of-fantasy-apologizes-for-long-launch-day-server-queues-with-freebies-for-all/
As was likely expected for a free-to-play online game launch, Tower of Fantasy's servers are struggling to handle day one interest with 10+ hour long server queues. We've already gone hands on with it and dubbed it a "messy Genshin Impact," though it does bring customizable characters and a slightly more shared world than Genshin. Even so, no surprise that all the current Genshin lovers are jumping in to see if it's a competitor worth fussing over before they head back to Teyvat.
>> And a player has found an "upsetting bug".

FIFA 23 will bring back loot boxes, EA confirms as it defends the practice
https://www.pcgamer.com/fifa-23-will-bring-back-loot-boxes-ea-confirms-as-it-defends-the-practice/
FIFA 23 will mark the end of Electronic Arts' long-running partnership with the Fédération Internationale de Football Association, the global sport governing body that gives the videogame series its name. But it won't mark the end of FIFA loot boxes, as EA has confirmed that randomized loot boxes will be back for the swansong.

Path of Exile's next quarterly expansion offers an early taste of the endgame
https://www.pcgamer.com/path-of-exile-lake-of-kalandra/
One of the great things about Path of Exile is its enormous, incredibly customizable endgame, the Atlas of Worlds. Taking every piece of the main game, past seasonal expansions, and more, throwing them into a blender and serving it up like some kind of never-ending Content Smoothie. The only problem is you've got to complete PoE's surprisingly extensive story campaign first, a feat many players still haven't achieved. The upcoming Lake of Kalandra expansion looks to give players an early peek at endgame action from the start.

Bungie has announced a huge nerf to a big problem in Destiny 2, plus a bunch of exotic buffs
https://www.pcgamer.com/bungie-has-announced-a-huge-nerf-to-a-big-problem-in-destiny-2-plus-a-bunch-of-exotic-buffs/
Believe it or not, one of the joys of slavishly playing a live service game is that a big patch note post is treated with the reverence of the Dead Sea Scrolls 2 being hand-delivered to your door. And let me tell you, Bungie just dropped an absolute banger. Ahead of the launch of Season 18 on August 23rd, the developer has detailed a swathe of changes coming to Destiny 2's combat sandbox. There are buffs and nerfs to some of the most used (and abused) gear, plus granular changes to specific perks, including the addition of much needed anti-Champion functionality on four exotic weapons.

Nightingale, the fantasy survival game from former BioWare developers, is delayed
https://www.pcgamer.com/nightingale-the-fantasy-survival-game-from-former-bioware-developers-is-delayed/
Nightingale is a faux-Victorian crafting and survival game being developed by Inflexion Games, a studio founded in 2018 (as Improbable Canada) by a group of former BioWare employees, including former Bioware GM Aaryn Flynn. The basic mechanics seem fairly straightforward—chop tree, crush boulder, pick berry, get gored—but the promise of travel between strange, dangerous realms gives it a sort of "Steampunk Stargate" aesthetic that could be genuinely interesting.

Destiny 2 cheat maker claims it hasn't harmed the game, says Bungie should work with it
https://www.pcgamer.com/destiny-2-cheat-maker-claims-it-hasnt-harmed-the-game-says-bungie-should-work-with-it/
Bungie ran into a bit of a snag in its legal campaign against Destiny 2 cheat sellers in May when a Seattle judge dismissed its copyright infringement complaint against cheat maker AimJunkies. Bungie had argued that the development of cheats was an infringement of its copyright, while AimJunkies defends its software as an original creation—and the judge agreed with AimJunkies.
That wasn't the end of the matter. Other elements of Bungie's lawsuit remained intact, including allegations of trademark infringement and "false designation of origin," and the studio was given time to restate the copyright infringement portion of its case. A few weeks later it did just that, alleging that AimJunkies "reverse-engineered and copied the software code for Destiny 2" in order to make its cheat software.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is getting a new map inspired by Shoot House
https://www.pcgamer.com/call-of-duty-modern-warfare-2-is-getting-a-new-map-inspired-by-shoot-house/
Infinity Ward has revealed details about one of the new multiplayer maps coming to Modern Warfare 2. It's called 'Farm 18', and is inspired by the 'Shoot House' map from the 2019 reboot of Modern Warfare.

Marvel's Spider Man Remastered PC - DF Tech Review - Graphics Breakdown, Optimised Settings + More!

Lots to talk about and I think people should watch this video because its very informative. I'll post some key points:

-PS5 does load the game faster due to PCs needing to do shader compilation during loading and DirectStorage is not part of the game. PS5: 1.92 seconds vs PC: 3.03 seconds or PS5: 1.6 seconds vs 4.3-4.8 seconds on the second test depending on the CPU. The fact that you do not get shader compilation stutters during in game though, I'd take this trade.

-Ray Tracing is once again, CPU limited if you have a high end system. Ryzen 3600: 70fps vs 12900k: 130fps.

-Texture Filtering is ass on PS5 vs you can crank it up on PC without much of a performance hit.

-Low end GPUs like RX580 has a lot of stutters despite being able to hit 60fps.

-Biggest improvement between PS5 and PC is of course in Ray Tracing while Raster only continues to show minimal visual improvements once again showcasing that buying a new GPU that is shat at Ray Tracing is a mistake if you play new games.

Ray Traced Reflections:

No DLSS vs FSR comparisons or GPU head to head on this video though but it's coming. One thing is clear though is that in this generation, we may see the biggest visual differences between PCs and Consoles compared to 7th and 8th gen simply due to the Ray Tracing capabilities of RTX GPUs.
