Meh, from what I have heard, Overwatch 2 sounds like it's gonna be a disaster. With Jeff Kaplen gone, I don't have much faith. We will see about Diablo IV though but man, so many companies don't seem to be able to get their act together these days.

I think it's partly down to all these companies taking on way too much baggage over the past decade, to a point where it has now reached boiling point (also doesn't help that either half of these companies has been playing a mix of follow the leader or play it safe and don't stand out at all) and is now showing the results of being too much to handle (like employees being lecherous, products outright flopping, poor choice of staff, poor choice of software/engine/tools).

It's kinda poetic in a way, because for years we've looked up to some of these companies as those that could do not wrong, but in reality they were just really good at hiding that until recent years, and now they can't hide it at all. Now they're all just another version of Asuka, reaching up to the sky, in vain attempts to staying both relevant and meaningful to the industry.

Yea that and all the good devs jumped ship. Many of them moved around to different companies because of all the stupid nonsense that's been happening internally. Together they were a golden team... Separately... Not so much. Like you look at what happened with Call of Duty after Vince Zampella and Jason West west left, they couldn't recreate the magic of MW/MW2 and instead kept giving us yawn worthy iterations for many years. The studio released Call of Duty Ghosts which was one of the worst games ever. It took them so many years to create something that comes close to the original MW/MW2 (MW 2019) but wasn't easy to get here.

That's a big yikes, a lot of old guard devs seems to be abandoning ship. Yeah they're definitely past their heyday of releasing gem after gem.

I'm optimistic about Diablo 4 (from what we've seen thus far). And with the work done to Diablo 2 Resurrected. They just need to clean up their act, and I think the whole Blizz debacle and management getting replaced might do something about that. Particularly WoW, which has been on a downward spiral since 2 expansions ago.

Yea Diablo IV looks good so far and hopefully, it will be. It's crazy how we don't yet have a sequel to WoW. Like a completely revamped game from the ground up. Like people always harp on Nintendo about relying on Nostalgia but WoW is on another level.

I'm surprised they didn't go with "are you ready to crank it up to 11?"

Since the Apple vs Epic trial has been discussed here before, we well as the possible consecuences for other platforms, we have a country that has already made a move: South Korea

South Korea passes law with major implications for Apple vs Epic
https://www.pcgamer.com/uk/south-korea-passes-law-with-major-implications-for-apple-vs-epic/
The National Assembly of South Korea has voted to pass a law that will force Apple and Google to let developers use alternative payment methods on the iOS and Android app stores (thanks, iMore). In normal times this would be big news. In the context of Apple and Epic's ongoing legal battle over anti-competitive practices, it is gargantuan.

The bill was passed today and, per the Wall Street Journal, will become law once signed by President Moon Jae-in. It amends South Korea’s Telecommunications Business Act to prevent huge platform-holders like Apple from making developers use their in-built payment systems. It further has provisions to stop retaliatory measures from platform-holders towards developers who choose to use alternative payment systems that, for example, would have stopped Apple removing Fortnite from the iOS store after Epic installed its own payment system.

Companies that don't comply can be fined up to 3% of their South Korean revenue.

This obviously means noting for the trial in place, but it's a sign of what can happen elsewhere.

Yea I think the cats are out of the bag and there's no stopping it now. It will be interesting to see if it will eventually apply to consoles and how would that look like. But for now, phones and such are gonna be very interesting.
