As some of you already know, I'm curently waiting for more reviews of the GTX 970 to make the jump and get it (it's a battle now between it and the R9 290, with the Nvidia card having all the advantages), but with the ridiculous requirements some studios are asking for, that Ryse pic and The Evil Within are the lastest examples, I don't know if it would be better for me to wait for a 8GB version of that card to make the jump.

Seriously, asking for that much VRAM is a ridiculous so early in this gen of console ports... and what the hell does Bethesda mean with "i7 with four plus cores"? Are there any i7 with less than 4 cores? And does it mean that an i7-920 is ok but an i5-2500K isn't? Bah!

/rant

Ryse pic? I thought Ryse wasn't too insane with it's 3GB for 1080p max settings, 4GB for 4K. Do you mean the Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor optional downloadable ultra HD (probably raw uncompressed) texture pack that requires 6GB? Because if the later I wouldn't worry about it that is a setting for crazy people, and future proofing.

As for The Evil Within I guess you can just write that one off as "lol, Japan" and "lol, id Tech 5". That game will almost assuradly be a terrible port, and be esentially the PS4 version just dumped on PC without any optimisation for the platform.

I thought it was a Ryse pic, my bad.

But it isn't just those games. Do you remember what happened with WatchDogs and the performance hit when enabling the textures to high/very high?

But all in all, gaming on my 1080p screen it won't be much of a problem.

Please excuse my bad English.

Currently gaming on a PC with an i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

I remember Watch Dogs, I also remember the mod that with a few tweaks to how texture streaming/lod worked dropped the VRAM requirements significantly with a negligable quality hit. As Ubisoft basically said fuck it just load all textures at their max LOD regardless of how big they are on screen with the Ultra textures mode.

You are very passionate about PC gaming. Its great. But it seems very few people share the same passion for PC gaming in this site.

Of course, because with PC gaming, there's much less to discuss regarding sales. There's also no point in debating graphics, because it's the platform that always leads. :P

Not much to bitch about when you are sitting on the throne unless there are bad ports. Yes, I'm still alive, just not around much these days lol.

If we have to wait for mods to fix what devs don't do we have problems. Big problems.

Nice to see you dahuman.

I guess it is too much to ask that devs learn from their mistakes...

The 2014 Saxxy Awards are live; will be the "biggest Saxxys yet"

It’s that time of year again. The time where players of Team Fortress 2 put aside their arbitrary differences for some creative filmmaking brilliance. There are categories for short, action, comedy and drama this year. Videos are already being submitted to the competition, and we’ll have the nominees on Tuesday next week.

For the time being, lets take a look at last year’s best overall winner. The bar is set extremely high.

Both Nvidia and AMD are preparing for 8K: “for the human eye that resolution is close to perfection”

Comments5

4K’s the current buzzword in pretty games. 3840 x 2160. More than 8 million pixels. Twice Four times the resolution of 1080p, it makes the old standard look like you’re playing games on an etch a sketch, not a computer. Right now, graphics card manufacturers are making cards that can pump out that many pixels, monitor makers are making screens them, and game developers are making games that demand them.

4K’s for wusses, I want to know about 8K.

I spoke to AMD and Nvidia to find out what they’re doing to make it happen.

Far Cry 4 trailer reintroduces Pagan Min with kidnapping, torture and an absurd chase sequence

Comment

I’m not especially interested in Far Cry 4’s dapper antagonist, Pagan Min, and wasn’t planning on posting this trailer that reintroduces him. Ubisoft makes more trailers than I can keep up with, anyway. But then I decided to watch it, and I changed my mind.

The tiger and elephant attacks certainly look like a good time, but they are topped by a high speed chase involving a quad bike, a plane and a wingsuit. Oh, and of course an explosion. Direct your eyes below for the turned up to 11 silliness.

Playing With Myself: The Long Dark

Comment

Playing With Myself is a new series where I faff around in a newly launched or Early Access game for under an hour, and you watch me do all of this faffing on the ol' YouTube. Then, if you fancy it, you can take a gander at my written impressions. It's a Let's Play and an impressions piece stiched together like Frankenstein's monster. Also, it has a slightly rude title. Hooray!

I am being stalked by death, a hunter whose name is mother nature. She’s terrible and inescapable. Where survival games are often filled with supernatural or psychopathic antagonists, The Long Dark pits survivalists against the environment and the completely regular beasts that roam it.

It’s lonely, gorgeous and infinitely more threatening than a world filled with zombies.

Anyone who brought a card with less than 3GB of VRAM in the last year and a half was setting themselves up for dissapointment. And anyone buying one today should get 4GB minimum.

Indeed.

Luckily consoles don't have access to the whole 8GB of RAM they have, leaving 1-1.5GB reserved for other system tasks that with time will be optimized and reduced to 0.5-1GB. And then there's the part of that RAM that deals with the CPU info.

And consoles are also able to make more with less RAM as the PS360 have proven.

This gen, it looks like GPU power won't be such a big problem, but VRAM will until cards with at least 8GB start appearing (and to be honest, that could be as soon as next year with AMD's 390X).
