That new bill is interesting. It won't be much of a problem for Google, given that they already split some things over its Alphabet group, but maybe it will for Apple.

And now that I think of it, if this bill passes soon, which it won't, it could end having an impact in the Apple vs Epic trial.

Yea but I think what the main implications of it if it passes is that it will change the console landscape forever as they will also be forced to use third party app payments and such. But yea, I doubt it will actually pass as that would be nuts.

Hopefully RDNA 3 will catch up to Lovelace in Ray Tracing. The Raster performance of both RDNA 3 and Lovelace should allow 4k 144hz gaming without much issues, especially with the higher end of the GPUs. But as the industry continues to move forward with Ray Tracing, spending the bucket loads of money that these upcoming GPUs will most likely cost with poor Ray Tracing performance may as well be a skip. Here's hoping RDNA 3 will be with in 10% of Lovelace in terms of Ray Tracing performance.

Valve should make a Steam PC that's subsidized like the Steam Deck

PC gaming these days has become a luxury more so than anything else. No longer can you argue about the concept of Value vs consoles. It's a platform where if you want to play, you need to pay a very high entry fee and imo, that's not going away anytime soon. Crypto is coming back up in price and once again, it is becoming viable to mine. Software like Nicehash makes it so easy to mine these days that anyone with a half decent GPU can do it. And electricity is so cheap that most people in a lot of countries won't care. AMD and Nvidia (to a slightly lesser degree) has all but abandoned the budget market. Intel is still releasing budget CPUs that perform very well but if you can't pair it with a good GPU, it won't be very useful when trying to play AAA games

This is why if Valve or someone were to make a gaming PC that's subsidized to be budget friendly, I think it would sell like hotcakes. The problem with the old steam machines is that not only were they third party only, building a PC with a similar price point would more often than not be cheaper as companies marked up the branded PCs or kept the same pre-built PC premium back in those days. These days however, it's more often than not cheaper to get a Pre-built PC than a DIY PC. And the reasons are companies like AMD/Nvidia gives OEMs discounts that they don't give the DIY market and releases cheaper components exclusively for OEMs. As an example, Dell has a 5800 non X which performs very closely to 5800X but it's obviously cheaper but it's OEM only.

So if Valve were to make a budget friendly PC with Steam OS with great value as they would get the same OEM discount. I think it would work in a market where the pricing is this terrible and AMD/Nvidia is not leaving a lot of options.

My hope would be:

They absolutely can make their own gaming PC's, they just have to do it themselves and not rely heavily on third parties like they did with Steam Machines (where they were the ones being hands off and the third parties were the hands on).

If they can push both Steam deck and their own PC's, both using Steam OS, I think they would have a good shot in the arm for pushing Linux that bit more and becoming a more stable player in the field (unlike Google/Amazon, both of which have seemingly flopped with their endeavours).

Half-Life 2 community gets highest amount of concurrent players since literal records began
https://www.pcgamer.com/uk/half-life-2-community-gets-highest-amount-of-concurrent-players-since-literal-records-began/
In an event called "Breaking the Bar", the Half-Life community decided to rally together and get as many concurrent players together as possible. The rules were simple: starting at 3pm UTC, everyone who wanted to take part simply had to run (and ideally play) Half-Life 2, while prominent streamers would be playing the game to raise attention. The reasoning is maybe a little more ambiguous, but sometimes you simply have to rally behind something—and they did it, hitting a peak of 16,101 concurrent players at exactly 3.30pm, with an additional 8,630 viewers on Twitch.
>> I'm going to guess that there were more than 16K simultaneous players back when the game launched.

The 18-item Jackbox Summer Party Bundle contains six Jackbox Party Packs for $20, which is a steal considering they typically sell for $25 or $30 each. It also includes a bunch of You Don't Know Jack trivia games and the Jackbox spin-off games Drawful 2, Fibbage XL, and Quiplash. The final item is a 40% off coupon for the most recent Party Pack 7.

Security flaw for unlimited Steam Wallet funds found, fixed

With the help of a security researcher, Valve has found and fixed an exploit that would have allowed a user to falsify the value of deposits to their Steam wallet. The exploit worked by—for example—turning a $1 deposit into a $100 deposit. It was accomplished by changing the account's email address to one including "amount100," then intercepting a message to a payment company API.

Firaxis Games, best known for making the Civilization series and XCOM, are currently looking for a slew of new hires—including, perhaps tellingly, a narrative lead with a "knowledge and passion for world history". The listing doesn't mention which game it would be for, only that it would for the studio's "next AAA strategy title". In addition to the narrative lead, Firaxis is also looking for several artists and programmers.

Boyfriend Dungeon will update with 'more accurate' content warning about stalking
https://www.pcgamer.com/uk/boyfriend-dungeon-will-update-with-more-accurate-content-warning-about-stalking/
Boyfriend Dungeon is about dating and dungeon crawling with swords... that are also people. It had a surprise release on the 11th of August, and despite its goofy premise on the surface, its story explores some sensitive themes, as Rachel noted in her preview: "Dating for many women and queer folk in general is, unfortunately, a huge risk, and meeting in public, having a friend on hand, and checking out the place are just some of the many safety tips used when meeting dates the first time. For a game about smooching sharp weapons, it's great to see Boyfriend Dungeon acknowledge that."

A possible Alan Wake 2 is now in "full production"
https://www.pcgamer.com/uk/a-possible-alan-wake-2-is-now-in-full-production/
Remedy has confirmed that their unannounced game project alongside Epic Games "has moved into full production." This is the game that some believe to be Alan Wake 2, following Remedy's reacquisition of Alan Wake in 2019 and announcement last year that the next game in the "Remedy Connected Universe" was already in the works. Remedy said in the same message to investors that they are still in "full production mode" on their second, smaller-scale unannounced game.
>> I'll be honest here: if this news had come out 5 years ago, I'd be *very* excited. But it's been 11 years since the game launched and it will take what, another two until this one releases? Yeah, thanks but it's too late for me, I've already moved on.

John Romero is making Sigil 2, but he's using Doom 2 this time

Doom creator John Romero is returning to Doom, again, with a sequel to his 2019 expansion mod Sigil. The appropriately named Sigil 2 will be released for Doom 2, taking an appropriate step forward along the Doom timeline to the next game. Sigil 2 doesn't yet have a release date, and it doesn't have a lot of development done either, but I wouldn't' despair of ever seeing it. Romero's been making games for most of his life. He'd be insane to stop now.

Core Decay, an upcoming Shocklike (which is to say, a stealth-action FPS with some RPG elements) being made by Ivar Hill and Slipgate Ironworks, has a new trailer and will have a demo out this year.

The Black Labyrinth will serve as a prequel to Amid Evil, containing new levels, new enemies, and new weapons as well as "new Andrew Hulshult placeholder music". [Note: Dave Oshry contacted us to clarify that, of course, that's just a joke, saying, "The music is definitely not a placeholder in actuality, heh."] The trailer shows a scythe thing that can shoot a row of purple energy blasts or just slice open reality and strand enemies in the void. I guess if your base game comes with a staff that shoots planets you need to go large for the DLC. There's also a pair of spiked gauntlets. I figure they'll probably let you punch enemies through time so a dinosaur eats them or something.

A streamer called Boba was having a merry old time playing Metal Gear Solid a few days ago, when along came one of the game's guards and shot Solid Snake—whose model recoiled backwards, and glitched into a sequence skip that will rewrite the rules for this time-honoured classic. Well OK, maybe not all the rules, but the minutes it can save you certainly have the speedrunners thrilled.
