And don't complain about your card, at least it will exhaust the hot air out of the case. And 290 € is a bargain, I can't find it for less than 350€ and all stores are out of stock (as I knew would happen) until next week.

Kickstarter now requires developers to make "every reasonable effort" to finish projects

In the last couple of years of crowdfunding, two things have ceased to be shocking. First, that Kickstarter can be a really good thing for undermonied game developers. And second, that it can go badly wrong - even for the most experienced project managers.

Kickstarter the organisation has traditionally stood well back from disputes over failed projects. But updated Terms of Service that’ll come into effect after October 19 will grant backers what they’ve been missing: a legal leg to stand on, should things go south.

John Carmack on what the Oculus Rift's integrated audio can do for gaming

Comments3

The weekend’s Oculus Connect conference has flooded the internet with keynotes from staff at the VR company - where water cooler chat, you imagine, ends with a totally reengineered water cooler.

In one panel, CTO John Carmack talked up the good VR can do for sound in gaming - where audio is traditionally under-resourced.

“All that audio stuff that everybody always wanted to do and we never thought made the grade for traditional gaming? Now we can actually make a difference,” said Carmack.

Tim Schafer explains why Spacebase DF-9 is being flung out the airlock early

Comments6

When Double Fine announced the imminent release of Spacebase DF-9, last week, it came as a bit of a surprise. It seemed early, and a long list of hoped for and planned features had yet to be implemented. Now they won’t be implemented at all. Early Access once again looked like a risky gamble.

Tim Schafer recently took to the Steam forums to explain the studio’s decision.

Stronghold Crusader 2 launches (a sack of diseased camel heads over your castle wall) tomorrow

Comment

Stronghold Crusader 2 launches tomorrow, having had its release date pushed back by three weeks to patch up some last few oddities and bugs, which is good news for fans of castles and knocking things over. I've been playing the base building RTS under the watchful eye of Simon Bradbury, lead designer at Firefly, who patiently peered over my shoulder as my idiot castle was stomped by the easiest AI opponent.

Nvidia: “Titan sold way above our expectations”

Comments4

With the launch of Nvidia’s new line of Maxwell GPUs, the GTX 980 and GTX 970, we had the chance to chat to Scott Herkelman, Nvidia’s head of GeForce GTX, about the Moore’s Law defying graphics cards and also Nvidia’s other anomaly: the Titan series.

No other card manufacturer has a card priced in the same region as the Titan series. Who’s buying them and in what numbers?

Assassin's Creed Unity DLC finally takes us to China on a quest for revenge

Comment

Ubisoft has pulled back the curtain on its post-release, season pass plans for Assassin's Creed Unity, and the publisher has managed to squeeze in a welcome surprise.

Along with the expected stuff like new weapons and customization options for Arno’s Parisian adventure, a new story campaign will take the Assassin out of the French capital and into the crypts of Saint Denis.

Far more interesting, though, is a standalone game separate from the story of Unity, set in 16th Century China with a female Assassin, Shao Jun.

Runescape's Lost City of the Elves has been found - it's always in the last place that you look

Comment

Back in January, Runescape players got to vote on what Jagex should work on for its next large update. The vote was between the invention skill and the Lost City of the Elves, Prifddinas. The latter won by a mere ten percent, making it about as close as the recent Scottish independence referendum. Maybe a bit less important, though.

Now the city has made its way into the game, all shiny and completely filled with elves.

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is vastly improved by an adorable canine mascot

Comments2

Metal Gear Solid is rarely adorable. Confusing and a bit depressing, sure, but it doesn’t delve into the realm of cuteness. That is, until now. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which was recently announced for PC, is undoubtedly the most cuddly, strokable Metal Gear game. And it’s all thanks to DD, a pup that Snake rescues after finding its dead mother.

DD is clearly the real star of The Phantom Pain.

Pathologic remake trailer is appropriately discomforting

Comment

Ice-Pick Lodge’s Pathologic Kickstarter - the remake of the developer’s first brilliant, but clunky, impenetrable survival mystery - has reached the mid-point of the campaign and the outlook is pretty good. With 14 days to go, it’s already raised almost $230,000 of its $250,000 goal.

There’s a proper trailer now, too, and it’s appropriately enigmatic and disquieting.

Steam active userbase doubles in two years to 100 million

Comment

It’s hard to imagine that somebody could collect 100 million anything and not win the grudging respect of enthusiasts everywhere.

Through persistence and patience, Steam has collated 100 million players - slowly at first, and then in a cascading rush - and gently pressed them into its charcoal book of PC games.

Triad Wars is an online crime simulator - "the flipside of Sleeping Dogs"

Comment

Triad Wars sounds like a Facebook game about spreadsheet management, but isn’t. It’s actually a sort-of-sequel to Sleeping Dogs from that game’s developers, United Front Games. Expect a “pure sandbox” PC game that’ll sit snugly alongside GTA Online and APB Reloaded in the emerging online crime genre.

Big changes to Steam: 'Discovery Update' adds curators, recommendations, and hides unpopular new releases

Tyler Wilde at 11:50 on 23 September 2014

The Steam homepage finally has a new look! A very slightly different, bluer new look! OK, it looks about the same, but the functional changes in today's 'Discovery Update' are really big.

Toxikk trailer tries to take arena shooters back to the old-school

Phil Savage at 02:11 on 23 September 2014

Is a man not entitled to the purity of his frag? Toxikk thinks he is, and has previously set out its "no bullshit" mantra in a short, action packed teaser. Today's trailer is more of the same, only slightly longer and with a fuller exploration of its back-to-the-'90s FPS philosophy.

Oculus Crescent Bay interview: Nate Mitchell on prototype tech and VR presence

Wes Fenlon at 07:19 on 23 September 2014

After testing out Oculus VR's new headset prototype Crescent Bay, I put the pieces of my brain back together enough to have a coherent chat with Nate Mitchell, VP of product at Oculus. I last talked to Nate at E3, when he walked me through demos of SUPERHOT and Lucky's Tale. This time, at Oculus Connect, we talked about the new Crescent Bay prototype—what Oculus had to improve from DK2 to achieve "presence," what kind of hardware it takes to run games at 90Hz, and whether gamers who ordered a DK2 should be upset that there's already a new prototype on the way.

Devs react to Spacebase DF-9 release: "Early Access is not an 'alternative' development approach"

Emanuel Maiberg at 10:15 on 23 September 2014

Earlier today, we brought you Tim Schafer's explanation for Spacebase DF-9's unexpected transition from early access to v1.0 release, and why planned features have been lost in the process. The short version is that the game stopped selling enough Early Access copies to keep supporting development at the scale Double Fine was hoping for, so it had to adjust its plans. In light of this, several other developers with Early Access games have made public statements regarding their projects, and Early Access in general.

Ubisoft explains why Watch Dogs is a lot like the first Assassin's Creed

Emanuel Maiberg at 11:38 on 23 September 2014

The original Assassin's Creed was a beautiful world in search of a game to occupy it. (When a large proportion of your mission design involves sitting on benches, you've got a variety problem.) Second time around Ubisoft made good on the premise with the brilliant Assassin's Creed 2, Brotherhood, and the company expects Watch Dogs to follow a similar pattern.

Blitzkrieg 3 will be the RTS antidote to "today's rapid pace of life"

Comment

Do you remember Blitzkrieg? It didn't make our list of the best strategy games on PC, but I remember the screenshots of bird’s-eye-view beach landings in the PC magazines of the early ‘00s. Mentions of the game seemed to linger for years afterward.

We’ve honoured that slow-burn tradition by picking up on Blitzkrieg 3’s fanfare a few day’s late, but with undiminished enthusiasm. The sequel comes from steadfast series originators Nival, and promises to repaint the familiar fights of World War II without the broad strokes of “politics or ideology”.

Trion lower ArcheAge subscription price after community kerfuffle

Comment

Our Nick’s has been rocked by changing winds while writing his ArcheAge review in progress - alternating between prime piracy anecdotes and sunk server woes. But a different issue has been bothering the game’s European community since the MMO's Western release a week ago.

ArcheAge’s subscription option had been priced higher than expected - a mistake Trion World have blamed on a “misunderstanding on our side” and subsequently corrected.

Richard Garriott's Shroud of the Avatar greenlit in short order

Comment

O, how the stars have fallen. If you paraphrase Lord British’s Wikipedia page concisely enough, you learn that “Richard Garriott built... his residence... in space”. But now the Ultima originator lives here to Earth, and has to push his game through Steam Greenlight like the rest of us.

Shroud of the Avatar spent just two days on the community service before it was accepted, however, and will be claiming a spot in Early Access in the near future.

Lords of the Fallen footage showcases mid-game boss fights and the "medieval BFG"

Comment

I came out of Dark Souls 2 excited to see what western RPG developers would glean from its idiosyncrasies. And who better placed to shave off some of its spirit than onetime Witcher producer Tomasz Gop, now at the head of his own studio and project?

As it happens, Lords of the Fallen circles very tightly around the template left by From Software, despite Gop's protests - but throws in a few punches of its own. Its latest mid-game footage shows off some juicy character specialisation and plenty of particle effects.
