If you thought the new cards within the Hearthstone: Curse of Naxxramas expansion were overwhelming, think again. Most notably was that it will include “around 100 cards”, and they’ll be gathered mainly via booster packs.

Screencheat is a game that encourages you to be "that friend" who, well, screen cheats

Comments2

I’ll admit - I used to screen cheat. Back in the days where I gamed on the couch with friends, I just couldn’t help glance over and quickly scan over my opponents screen for valuable information. Eventually I became so proficient at it, I did it entirely subconsciously.

Today I can bring back that hidden talent to lay waste to my foes in a new game, aptly dubbed Screencheat. It’s a game where you’re actually encouraged to look at your friends screen in order to win. Why you ask? Well because you’re both invisible.

Mojang postpone Minecon until 2015; still to take place in London

Comments1

Mojang have announced that there won’t be a Minecon this year as previously planned, instead being moved to “spring” next year where it is still to take place in London. The exact reason for the postponement is unknown, but the Mojang blog post by COO Vu Bui seems to suggest it was a problem to do with the venue.

“We want to make sure we can follow through with the event and we never want people to start planning to attend something that might not happen.”

How the indie community united to save survival game Duskers, a studio, and a dream

Comments2

Duskers is a defiantly singular game. It’s “indie” in more of a “to hell with it, this one’s for me” kind of way rather than as a way to denote studio size or aesthetic. It’s unforgiving and, at first glance, deliberately obscure. You control drones exploring derelict starships in a galaxy that has gone dead, gathering scraps of supplies and avoiding combat at all costs. You have to meet Duskers on its own terms, because it makes few concessions.

It’s also Misfits Attic’s second game, and a passion project for designer Tim Keenan. It’s the game he started making just as he started to realize his indie dream was about to die. Duskers was how Keenan was choosing to go out, and he suspected he’d never even be able to finish it.

Then the indie community came to the rescue.

Diablo III gains ladder-like Seasons system in Reaper of Souls 2.1

On the face of it, Diablo III is a cooperative game - but it’s always been played competitively, with one eye on the wider Blizzard community. This first major patch for Reaper of Souls will finally acknowledge that tendency in-game, with a Seasons system that starts players at the bottom, brigand-bothering rung of demon-hunting and compares their performance on leaderboards.

Age of Empires: Castle Siege is a Clash of Clans-ish Windows 8 exclusive

If you want to gauge Microsoft’s changing attitude toward PC gaming at any given point, look at what it’s doing with Age of Empires. The long dark age of Games for Windows Live was heralded by Ensemble Studios’ closure in 2008. And renewed efforts to “up Microsoft’s gaming presence on Windows” have seen the company take stock in recent months, releasing extended editions of Age of Empires II and Age of Mythology on Steam.

What are we to make, then, of Castle Siege? A touchscreen-focused Clash of Clans homage found only on the Windows 8 Store?

Smuggling booze in Elite: Dangerous is challenging, noble work

Elite: Dangerous is a game where people get excited about docking. And they should be, because docking with a space station is an involved, exciting process. While not exceedingly demanding, they are quite a bit higher than the minimum specs, and will likely leave anyone with a PC that’s more than a few years old struggling a little bit.

British geologists fill the gaps in Ordnance Survey's Minecraft Great Britain

Comment

An awful lot of comprehensive geographical, topographical and geological data about Great Britain has been compiled and compressed on computers. And for decades, nobody knew quite what it was for. Some vaguely recalled that we started mapping in the wake of the Jacobite Rebellion, but that no longer seemed particularly relevant.

Then, with a collective sigh of academic relief, we hit upon the reason: it was all necessary to create an accurate replica of the British landmass in Minecraft. Inspired by the Ordnance Survey’s Minecraft map of Great Britain’s mounds and motorways, the British Geological Survey have recreated the real geology beneath the surface - right down to the bedrock.

The musical, which as far as I can tell never entered production, is simply titled Elite: The Musical — The Elite Musical and it's brilliant. It's about some space folks who head off into the stars in pursuit of a notorious pirate, with unexpected twists and turns along the way.

Shadowrun: Dragonfall - Director's Cut turns the expansion into a standalone next month

Comments1

While Shadowrun Returns did a lot of things very well, particularly in the writing, it didn’t quite offer the freedom that its tabletop forebearer was known for. Its expansion, Dragonfall - a proper expansion like the ones found in ye olden tymes - made strong moves in that direction though. A big hub to explore, lots of optional quests, a proper cast of party members who don’t mind a bit of a gab - it was quite the improvement.

And now soon you’ll be able to pick it up as a standalone. Shadowrun: Dragonfall Director’s Cut will come with the expansion’s campaign, five new missions and a slew of changes and new features that might even make it worth dipping in a second time. It’s free if you own the expansion already, too.

Despite its apparent heyday being far behind us, there does seem to be a healthy number of modern first-person dungeon crawlers around. Surprisingly, many of them are handheld games, but on PC we’ve not been left out in the cold. Legend of Grimrock and Might & Magic X are the most notable ones, but there’s StarCrawlers, too, and it looks rather promising. And the dungeons are spaceships rather than crumbling ruins and dark caves, which is definitely a welcome shift.

Quake Live gets a massive, newcomer-friendly update in anticipation of the Steam launch

When free, browser-based Quake Live was announced for Steam back at QuakeCon, bringing with it changes and new features, details on what these changes would actually be were sparse. But now the curtain has been lifted, and a hefty update has been applied to the game to get it ready for what the team no doubt hopes will be an influx of new players when it launches on Steam.

Most of the changes are built around the team’s goal to broaden its appeal, making it more welcoming to newcomers. This includes things like letting players select their loadout - their primary and secondary weapons - and scrapping gun-specific ammo packs for global ones.

Shape Of The World Is A Growing Exploration Game

By Graham Smith on August 27th, 2014 at 2:00 pm.

Shape of the World is an “artistic exploration game where the world grows around you.” It’s being made by three game developers working in Vancouver: lead dev Stu Maxwell, who previously worked on Relic’s Space Marine; Athomas Goldberg doing “creatures”, who previously worked on animation systems at EA; and Brent Silk on sound and music.

And that’s pretty much all I know, except that the three GIFs below the fold – and the screenshots through on the game’s site – mean that I’m already in love with this dreamy, colourful, self-constructing world.

Valve Time Force: Super Time Force Now On PC

The time-twisting shooty platformer’s port from Xbox is fancied-up, as one would hope. Capy Games bunged in a new mode and more levels, renamed it to make a most entertaining acronym, and also teamed up with some other folks who play loose with time, Valve.
