Battlefield Hardline footage leaked so far is six months old - Visceral will show "real deal" at E3

Comments1

At some point yesterday, between digging up mention of a SWAT-themed Battlefield in Battlelog’s files and scouring leaked Battlefield Hardline footage for clues, we felt a pang of guilt.

We’d ruined EA’s E3 for them, surely? That trailer had to be the backbone of their conference - and we’d taken it from them. Poor CEO Andrew Wilson would now be forced to play for time performing on-stage skits with Pitbull or shouting the word ‘sports’, over and over.

Apparently not. Visceral Games say the Hardline footage is now six months old - and E3 will be about showing us “how much further the team has taken things”.

The world likes Call of Duty because it’s "believable and relatable", say Sledgehammer

Comments1

Sledgehammer are the first new studio to make a Call of Duty game in nearly a decade - and during the development of Advanced Warfare, they’ve done some thinking about what makes the series tick (and once the timer’s done, explode spectacularly).

“I think Call of Duty resonates because it’s believable and relatable,” said Sledgehammer co-founder Michael Condrey. “And it’s always been one of the strengths of the franchise.”

Call off the dogfight: Star Citizen's Arena Commander module has been delayed

Comments2

Hey, Chris Roberts - the space game resurgence is happening without you! The Elite: Dangerous alpha was a proper rolling, pitching vacuum combat game months ago, and now it does station docking and hyperspace jumps like they’re nothing.

Right now, Star Citizen is stone soup: a pot of ideas to throw increasingly large amounts of crowdfunded money into. It certainly isn’t a playable game. Its Arena Commander dogfighting module was due to launch today - but in the event, bugs ensured it didn’t make it to the pad.

Battlefield: Hardline doesn't mean DICE will stop work on Battlefield 4

Comments1

Since a game named Battlefield: Hardline emerged prematurely from Battlelog’s database, we’ve seen quiet acknowledgements from EA and gushing missives from Visceral Games. The only people we haven’t heard from are DICE - the custodians of the entire Battlefield series, until now.

“I want to be sure you all understand that introducing Hardline in no way means we’re done working on Battlefield 4,” said DICE president Karl Magnus Troedsson today. “Nothing could be further from the truth.”

Troedsson outlined a future for Battlefield 4 built on continued support, mystery new features, an expanded community test environment, and something that community has been clamouring for - a major netcode patch.

Relic pluck Dawn of War games from the maws of Gamespy and Games for Windows Live

Comments1

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War and its three ambitious expansions were on the kill list of games set to lose their servers once Gamespy expires this weekend. But about a week ago, Relic sent a squad of terminators to take back their space hulk and leave Steam matchmaking in their wake.

Dawn of War II isn’t under threat, but it does operate under the iffy Games for Windows Live - and Relic have decided to give it the same treatment. In short order, all of the progressive RTS games in Relic’s fold will be operating under the same matchmaking system and backend developed for Company of Heroes 2.

Well, who knows.

And I wouldn't be surprised if the next idTech engine drops OpenGL now that Carmack is gone.

There is a lot of legacy there, the plan put in place was to continue to iterate on tech 5 instead of making a new engine this generation. With the recent push for OpenGL improvement from Valve etc meaning that there is an increased focus on it from hardware vendors in terms of driver support. If they stuck with OpenGL this long I doubt they would be a rush to change now. And that wouldn't change anything for the current batch of titles anyway.

If they don't develop a new one then it's pretty much obvious that they will keep using OpenGL.

My doubts come after that. I mean, even before the Tech5 was launched, Carmack admited that they used OpenGL because they were used to, not because it was better. And now that he (and who knows how many more since they were bought by Zenimax) has left, that may change. After all, Zenimax may want to replace some of those folks with people from Bethesda and maybe create 1 engine for all its teams.

But I'm simply speculating.

@GTX 770 4GB: You want the one with extra RAM don't you? .

I don't know the prices over there, but here that particular card is too close in price to AMD's 290 with a 3rd party cooler which not only has the same amount of RAM but it is also faster in pretty much any game... But I know you prefer Nvidia so go for it! It will last you many good years of gaming (at 1080p).

Please excuse my bad English.

Currently gaming on a PC with an i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet    Add me if you want, but I'm a single player gamer.

True I could get a 290 for about the same price and it would outperform the 770 in most things by a decent margin. But I do kinda want that PhysX support. And Nvidia's recent driver changes plus DX12 lessen the advantage of mantle. Since the three main games I want a new card for are Nvidia titles (Batman, Far Cry 4, Witcher 3) with Star Citezen being the main AMD title but that won't be out for at least a year and a half anyway I am leaning towards the 770. If Watch Dogs is any indecation 3GB will be the  minimum going forward even at 1080p.

I recently got the Gtx 770 2GB ($310 with three free games via Nvidia) a few months back and have enjoyed it. Assassins Creed 4 runs around 40-55 FPS with ultra everything in settings, 1080p, 4x MSAA and physx particles on normal. Physx Particles on extreme caused it to dip under 30 fps in boat fights and around campfires. I have it slightly overclocked but not much. Having physx support is pretty awesome though.  Bioshock Infinite also ran over 60 fps 98% of the time.

I got it on the recommendation that I wouldn't need the 4GB of ram as the kinds of games that will need that much at 1080p/1440p are years off. Although I'm not sure that is a true statement anymore. I really hope I didn't fuck up by not spending the extra $50-$60 for the 4GB.

Well Watch Dogs already starts stuttering with less than 3GB of RAM with ultra textures at 1080p. Tho that might just be a memory management issue. Having said that MSAA+Ultra textures can even cause issues on cards when moving fast with 3GB aparently. But again that could be an issue with Watch Dogs, tho I wouldn't be surprised if it became a trend over the next couple years. Especially in open world games like Watch Dogs, The Witcher 3 etc. You should be fine if you drop textures and AA down a notch tho.

This is a comparison of Watch Dogs with High textures (recommended for 2GB+ at 1080p) vs Ultra (recommended for cards with 3GB+)

Finally, actual dogs: The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot now swaddled in Watch Dogs gear

When you think about it, Watch Dogs’ surveillance madness is a good match for The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot, the game about overzealous home security systems.

And Ubisoft Montreal have thought about it. They’ve bathed the halls of their action RPG in the pale blue light of wall-mounted cameras, and dressed their fantasy heroes in quip-muffling bandanas.

The cap didn’t make it over, somehow. Maybe it’s not so iconic after all.

Porting battle.net to iOS has made handheld Hearthstone a "significant undertaking"

It’s now entirely real.

David Braben on the ambitious future of Elite: Dangerous

Andy Kelly at 23:33 on 30 May 2014

“There are over 100 billion star systems,” Elite creator David Braben tells me when I ask if that number could possibly be true. “In fact, it’s closer to 400 billion. It’s a very silly number anyway.” Elite: Dangerous is the modernised sequel to the classic freeform space sim, and there’s no faulting developer Frontier’s ambition. The game sees you, a rookie pilot, set loose in a vast celestial sandbox with 100 credits in your space-wallet and dreams of achieving the ultimate pilot rating: elite. How you do this is up to you, whether you become a trader, a pirate, a smuggler, and many more jobs besides.

Braben compares his vision of the Milky Way to the California gold rush of the 1800s. “When there was a gold rush in San Francisco in 1849, many of the people who made money didn't mine a single piece of gold. What they did was take a cargo of spades and things like that, and sold them at stupidly inflated prices. Our galaxy will be continuously evolving. You might get the occasional gold rush, which changes the status of a particular place. Players will be running in to try and get some of the gold that’s been discovered in some outlying system. But what else will happen is that a whole raft of other things will be in demand. The need for food and equipment will skyrocket.”
