Steam has over one billion accounts
https://www.pcgamer.com/steam-has-over-one-billion-accounts/
Steam quietly welcomed its billionth registered account in April. Steam ID Finder shows that they joined on April 28, netting themselves a Steam ID with a lot of zeroes, but no parade. Valve hasn't marked the occasion, probably because the number doesn't mean quite as much as concurrent or monthly active users. Both of them are still pretty high, too.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey introduces Testiklos the Nut, a new mercenary
https://www.pcgamer.com/assassins-creed-odyssey-introduces-testiklos-the-nut-a-new-mercenary/
Oh, Ubisoft. If you're going to go there, you might as well go the whole hog.
The latest mercenary to appear in Assassin's Creed Odyssey is Testiklos the Nut. As well as his unfortunate name, he's laden with a tragic past. OK, it's not a tear jerker, but I guess it's a bit sad. He misses his brother, you see. Testikles (who you might've met previously in the game). They were separated when they were young, and Testiklos hasn't been the same since.

Ghost Recon Wildlands' new character looks like an awful lot like The Punisher
https://www.pcgamer.com/ghost-recon-wildlands-new-character-looks-like-an-awful-lot-like-the-punisher/
If you haven't played Ghost Recon Wildlands yet, I have to ask: Why? It's an excellent open-world shooter, big, varied, reactive, filled with vehicles to drive and guys to shoot, and perfectly willing to let you do whatever dumb, self-destructive stuff seems like a good idea at the time. But if you're somehow still not convinced, you can find out for yourself in the upcoming free-to-play weekend, which will also see the kickoff of Operation Oracle, a two-mission job "that will challenge your perception of the truth."

Mordhau's breakout success has its servers under siege
https://www.pcgamer.com/mordaus-breakout-success-has-its-servers-under-siege/
Mordhau, a first-person medieval combat game where you can decapitate one another with polearms, is a very fun game. It's also very laggy. Since it launched yesterday and has crawled up to become Steam's global top seller, Mordhau's servers are buckling under the weight of all those would-be knights trying to stab one another. It's really spoiling the fun of its extremely deep combat.

Blizzard isn't going to Gamescom this year
https://www.pcgamer.com/blizzard-isnt-going-to-gamescom-this-year/
Gamescom is the biggest videogame trade show in the world: It drew 370,000 visitors in 2018, compared to just over 69,000 for E3. It's open to the public while E3 is, technically at least, mainly an industry-only event, which is obviously a big factor in that difference, but even so there's no denying that it's major international event. Despite that, Blizzard has decided to skip it this year.

Run a robo-kitchen in Automachef

Automachef approaches the art of cooking like an engineer. It's a cooking puzzle game, though quite a bit different from its fellow Team17-published culinary experiment, Overcooked. To make all these salads and burgers, you'll need to build a manufacturing behemoth evocative of Factorio and Big Pharma, programming machines to do all the dirty work.

Star Wars Battlefront arrives on Steam and GOG, as May the 4th sales begin
https://www.pcgamer.com/star-wars-battlefront-arrives-on-steam-and-gog-as-may-the-4th-sale-begins/
Pandemic's 2004 game Star Wars Battlefront has come to Steam and GOG, as Star Wars Day approaches. While Battlefront 2 has been on Steam for a long time, this is kind of a surprise—there are some key differences between each game, particularly in the choice of maps, but I doubt many people expected this 14 year-old shooter to pop up in 2019. User AnthonyBF2 has created a guide for getting online with the game, if you're keen. It's got a launch discount on both Steam and GOG, too.
Rhen Var lives! Though you could always download the maps from the first game with the Conversion Pack mod for Battlefront 2.

Star Wars Day is named as such, of course, based on the sweaty pun 'May the 4th be with you', and it means loads of Star Wars games will be on-sale on both Steam (expect those deals to go live later today) and GOG. Star Wars fans probably know which are the essential purchases, given that most of the great games based on that universe are ancient history, now. KOTOR 1 and 2, the Jedi Knight series, the X-Wing series, Republic Commando and Rogue Squadron are all safe bets. Peruse our best Star Wars games list for more recommendations.

Ubisoft is trying to wipe out key reselling with 'silent key activation'
https://www.pcgamer.com/ubisoft-is-trying-to-wipe-out-key-reselling-with-silent-key-activation/
Ubisoft has teamed up with digital distribution firm Genba Digital to change its method of selling PC games through third-party stores like Fanatical and Games Republic. The new process is called 'silent key activation' and activates games on platforms like Steam and Uplay automatically rather than giving out codes to retailers and customers. From now on, Ubisoft will only sell games through sites that use SKA.
Instead of giving a retailer a massive list of keys that could theoretically be pinched or resold, no keys actually pass hands. Genba, which also won't have direct access to the keys, sets up a keybank that will distribute keys one-by-one, with each of them being recorded before the next one is sent out, and then the game will be activated on the customer's account.

CS:GO Danger Zone gets respawns and jump boots

CS:GO's Danger Zone battle royale looked so dreadfully dull compared to the more flavoursome Fortnite and, later, the slick Apex Legends, that I never really gave it a shot. Borderlands 3's main story will last 30 hours 'if you beeline it'

There's going to be plenty of Borderlands 3 to sink your teeth into. At a preview event on Tuesday, our writer James played about three hours of the new looter shooter, which is a mere fraction of the full game, as it turns out. According to creative director Paul Sage, the main quest for Borderlands 3 will last for 10 times that.
"If you beeline it through, and I mean beelining it through, it might take you 30 hours to complete the main story," Sage said.

Now that WWZed is established as a legitimate success, developer Saber Interactive has laid out its plans for post-release updates, which will begin later this month with a new mission set in Tokyo. The May add-on will also add a new type of zombie that spits a deadly virus and can come back to life (well, undeath) if it's not "properly dispatched."

Ongoing support for Anthem is not dropping off, despite persistent rumours that key development staff have moved on to other projects. Both executive producer Mark Darrah and lead producer Michael Gamble are believed to have moved on to Dragon Age 4, a rumour supported by this recent coy Tweet by Gamble (and one that Gamble elsewhere seems to deny).

Fallout 76's next and final Wild Appalachia update, Patch 9, has piqued my interest with the promise of player-run shops. Finally, you can start attracting players to your camp where they will be able to buy all your junk and fill your pockets with caps. Start having a browse in your stash to earmark some of your hoard for sale.

That's very strange, mostly given the date (it's not the end of first of a month, when most deals tend to expire). I wonder if it will be hard to fix and how they'll explain it.

The date matches, apparently, since their certificates were due to expire May 4th at midnight. Dial back the clock manually and add-ons can be downloaded and start to work again. Either way, a tremendous oversight that shouldn't have happened outside of Beta Firefox if you ask me.

For instance, lawyers (and others) here need digital certificates to digitally sign their work. A lot of software for government agencies also work only on Firefox...
