Freeper of Souls: Diablo III patch 2.0.1 rolls out today, and Loot 2.0 with it

Comment

Hollywood teaches us that the sea retreats from the shore right before the biggest wave hits, as if Poseidon himself is gearing up for a really snotty sneeze. Today, Blizzard are breathing in. They’ve recalled their closed beta for next month’s Reaper of Souls expansion and pulled down the Public Test Realm for its imminent, accompanying patch: 2.0.1.

Three nights only: final qualifiers for $250k crowdfunded Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournament

Comment

We are rapidly gaining on EMS One, the Counter-Strike tournament hosted in Katowice, Poland - best pronounced as a TV Batman “KATOW!”, followed by a cool-as-you-like “-ice”. It’s especially notable this year, not only because Counter-Strike: Global Offensive player numbers are on the rise, but because its sizeable prize pool has been composed entirely from the contents of the holey pockets of those very same players.

The main event is a couple of weeks away still - but six of its 16 team slots have yet to be filled. That’s what this evening’s European qualifiers are all about.

Party up like Charlie Sheen: Battlefield 4 'Platoons' feature will allow pre-game grouping

Comment

“Right, men. Whatever happens, we stick together.”

Those were the last words I heard our Tim say before the PCGN we-don’t-need-a-parachute regiment sallied forth into the Titanfall beta last week. I watched haplessly as a perk-boosted Nick sprinted off into the undergrowth, and only caught fleeting glimpses of my colleagues thereafter.

The same won’t happen for much longer in Battlefield 4, at least. Players will soon be able to join up with other players before joining a match, rather than during.

Deus Ex: The Fall PC edition heads to Steam

Following last year’s release on mobile devices, we’re really happy to now announce that Deus Ex: The Fall is coming to Steam on March 25.

The game’s been adapted for the PC, meaning (of course) full keyboard/mouse controls, but also a whole bunch of other little bits too - so if you didn’t fancy dipping into Ben Saxon’s story previously, now would be an eminently sensible time to reconsider. After all, the game was produced with the original creative team from the superb Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and there's the small matter of new tracks penned by none other than Michael McCann...

The Steam version will sell for £7.99/€9.99/$9.99, but if you pre-order the game now (or grab it for a limited time after launch) you’ll also get the original Deus Ex – Game of the Year Edition as well, for free... and if you’ve already have DE:GOTY, you’ll be able to gift it to somebody else instead!

So what’s on the complete feature list, compared to last year's mobile version of the game?

  • No in-game purchase options
  • 28 Steam achievements
  • Adjusted AI
  • Steam Trading Cards, Badges and  (TBC)
  • Revised tutorial
  • Full keyboard and Mouse control optimisation
  • Rebalanced game economy taking into account no IAP
  • Microsoft Controller support
  • Removal of auto target options
  • Reduction in aiming recital size
  • Choice in cover style as DXHR (HOLD or Toggle)
  • Resolution options
  • Anti Aliasing option
  • Vsync
  • Control maps for keyboard and gamepad

So while Eidos-Montreal continues to work on the hugely exciting plans for Deus Ex Universe and a full-on, triple-A Deus Ex game, you should definitely jump into Deus Ex: The Fall while you wait…

Anyway, it looks like Thief doesn't support Mantle nor TrueAudio yet. They will launch a patch later in March to add them.

Not that some won't be able to enjoy the game because of that, tho.

From the sound of things the game it's self is what is stopping people enjoying it

That's what I wanted to say with the last sentence. Mantle will help the game to run better, but not to be better.

I'll have to keep an eye on that Vector Thrust game! As a fan of the good Ace Combat games (read, not the last one), I'm all for arcade with a bit of simulation flying games.

Blizzard plan to strip currency systems from World of Warcraft raiding in Warlords of Draenor

Comments4

Randomised loot drops are, when tuned well, a recipe for joy - but the flipside is the potential for crushing runs of bad luck. There’s nobody who understands that better than Blizzard, who first introduced a currency reward to World of Warcraft raiding as consolation prize for players who never seemed to land the shoulder piece they wanted.

These days, there are two currencies at work in the raiding system - but Blizzard want to remove both of them.

Port Inspection - Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2

Comment

There are always going to be games that we don’t end up reviewing. This makes us a little bit sad. Multi-platform releases are the ones that most often fall by the wayside, but we still want to let you know if they are worth your time and worth playing on PC.

The Port Inspection is our solution. Instead of a traditional review, our inspections will look at how the PC version of a multi-platform release stacks up, technically. And we’ll do this wearing lab coats.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, MercurySteam’s final outing in Konami’s venerable franchise, is our inaugural Port Inspection. It’s always good to start of with something divisive, and the Lords of Shadow series is nothing if not that.

Redeem your Reaper of Souls key before March 31st and get the Demon Hunter for Heroes of the Storm

The Reaper is coming, the Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls specifically. Souls are indeed a form of currency for Blizzard. If you’re into that sort of thing, you might like to pick up Reaper of Souls. If you grab it and redeem your key before March 31st, you’ll get a couple of gifts from Blizzard.

You can strut around Diablo 3 with some flaming Archangel wings and, this is probably a bigger deal, you’ll unlock Valla the Demon Hunter for Heroes of the Storm, when it eventually launches. Future rewards!

Make like the Daedra and swarm The Elder Scrolls Online in our beta weekend giveaway

Comments90

Update: If you're getting an invalid code message when attempting to redeem the key, this probably means you already have access from the earlier beta event. Check your account, at the side it should say "Beta Access", that means you're good to go. Just give the code to a chum. If you don't see that, and the code is invalid, you'll need to contact customer support. Cheers to RodRackStack for bringing this to our attention.

The Elder Scrolls Online is a video game that in some places plays like the Elder Scrolls games did two iterations ago, and in others like the Elder Scrolls has never played before. I quite like it. You may not: but it is like no other MMO you’ve ever hopped through before, and you’ll be contractually required as a PC gamer to have an opinion on it.

Let’s make it an informed one, eh? We’ve got 1,200 beta keys, and one looks like it might have your name in it, if you squint a bit.

Nosgoth enters closed beta February 27th, new skins being designed by Soul Reaver art lead

Vampires vs. humans arena scrapper Nosgoth is making the move to closed beta, letting more folk kick in the doors of the grisly game and slaughter each other for gold and glory come February 27th.

This would be a good thing were it not for the fact that more players probably means I’ll have more competition, and I’ve been rather enjoying not having my ass kicked consistently in an online game for once.

So if you do see me in a match, please leave me alone. I just want to drink blood and be left in peace.

The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot opens its portcullis for free Steam beta

Comment

The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot is an action-RPG-cum-dungeon-keeper hybrid. It's of interest not only because Dungeon Keeper proper has lately been malformed beyond recognition, but also because it’s the first ever RPG to emerge from Ubisoft Montreal's former textiles mill - birthplace of Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six: Vegas, Watch Dogs, and a dozen other sneaky action games that’ll make you go “Oh yeah!”.

Until now, access has been restricted to players willing to stump up for Steam Early Access, which seemed a bit off in a game destined to be free-to-play. But that was then, when Opulencia hadn’t opened its doors for open beta.

Valve grant Steam price-slashing powers to developers

Comment

Valve are uniquely open to suggestions when it comes to price cuts - numerous developer accounts over the years have testified to that. Flash sales are timed to coincide with major updates - sometimes offering indies a crucial second wind that’s allowed them to keep the lights on.

This is unprecedented, though: carte blanche for developers to run their own sales via the Steam store, whenever they like, at whatever price point they desire.

Up in the air: What will happen when Games for Windows Live shuts down?

Comments2

The end is almost in sight for the blighted Games for Window Live service, and there was much rejoicing. The Windows Live Marketplace shut down last year, and a now-deleted official post for Age of Empires Online stated that GfWL would be dead by July, and further implied the game would no longer be playable after that date. Microsoft has refused to comment on the matter, however, and that’s putting a lot of developers in a pickle.

Without an explanation from Microsoft, many studios are concerned that their titles will be effectively unplayable come July, and thus have begun the process of removing GfWL and adding Steamworks instead. Unfortunately, an even greater number of publishers have absolutely no plans to remove GfWL from some of their games, leaving them without online support and in some cases, potentially broken.

Exploring Everquest Next Landmark: the closed alpha's best builds

Comments1

Everquest Next Landmark's desert is a little like a post-apocalyptic world in progress, littered with half-finished but deserted houses and castles of such scale and imposing beauty that great Ozymandias would regret wasting so much time erecting vast and trunkless legs of stone  to troll passing travellers. In most cases, they're deserted while their creators go to mine more of the gold or whatever else they need to put the finishing touches on them, but that's okay. While you can't mine anyone else's claim, for obvious reasons, you can visit all them and travel between servers to see what people have made now that they're free of the tyranny of solid blocks and able to craft in slopes, spheres and other voxel goodness.

Here's some of our favourites from around the assorted servers, mostly for doing something a bit different with the tools than simply putting up a house - though the houses people are building are already looking great, and come in just about every flavour you can imagine.

While Lion's Arch burns, ArenaNet fiddles around with an interactive Guild Wars 2 atlas

Comment

Confession time: I have a love of maps and cartography that borders on a fetish. Back before proper in-game maps were common, my study was overflowing with graph paper covered in labyrinthine mazes and maps of towns, and I often found myself ignoring school work in favour of doodling my own maps of fantasy lands plucked out of my own noggin. Right now, my mouse mat is currently a giant map of the world, and several random maps are scattered across my walls and floor. Yeah, I’ve got a problem.

So I feel confident in saying that ArenaNet is an enabler. Not only does Guild Wars 2 have an absolutely lavish map that I lose myself in every time I look at it, the developer has put up a new interactive map on its site, which is “designed to lead fans through a process of discovery that illustrates the game’s current living world storyline.” The bastards.

Blizzard will price World of Warcraft level 90 boost at $60 to avoid "devaluing" levelling

Comments8

Warlords of Draenor is about as inclusive as WoW expansions get: each copy comes with a magic wand to wave at one of your characters and bring them right up to level 90.

It wasn’t a surprise to learn that Blizzard would be selling an identical boost via WoW’s in-game store, but the price turned heads: $60.

Blizzard have assured players that they’re not running a “profit maximising” scheme - but instead ensuring that WoW’s levelling zones don’t become NPC-only wastelands.

Silent Enemy is a game about bullying in which you're not the perpetrator

We spend a lot of times in our games being bullies. We manipulate environments and the people in them; we knock NPCs over and laugh as they struggle to get back up. It can’t really be helped that those are the most entertaining ways to interact - but it’s cool to see somebody explicitly explore the other perspective.

Minority are the Montreal lot who made Papo and Yo - a game which, when stripped of its fantasy, was about navigating a Brazilian favela with your abusive, alcoholic father. They’re nearly done on their new thing - a puzzle-laden adventure about high school bullying.

Dead Island: Epidemic shambles into closed beta

ARTSs, MOBAs, MOTAs, ZOMBAs, when are we going to get some consistent nomenclature for the genre? It’s all very peculiar. Presumably developers are making so many MOBAs right now because of the success of the likes of Dota and LoL, yet at the same time they make a pretty big effort not to be linked to the genre at all. It’s exhausting.

But despite constantly marketing it as a ZOMBA (Zombie Online Multiplayer Battle Arena), Deep Silver’s tongue does appear to be firmly in its cheek when it comes to its free-to-play Dead Island: Epidemic, at least. It knows its made a MOBA, but it doesn’t want you to forget zombies are in it. And it’s now moved into closed beta.

Koe is an introduction to the Japanese language in a game reminiscent of traditional JRPGs like Final Fantasy and Pokemon.

All artwork in the video is placeholder, and will be completely revamped if funding is successful.

Koe)pronounced “ko-eh” is a role-playing game in the style of traditional JRPGs such as Dragon Quest, Pokemon and Final Fantasy and is influenced heavily by them. Koe will be released for Windows, Mac OSX and Linux with plans for it to be released on Playstation Vita. The special edition of Koe will only ever be available through this Kickstarter campaign!

Essentially, what I want to do in the game is give you an introduction to the Japanese language within the game itself. I know people who are interested in this style of gaming, as well as Anime and Manga, and who have wanted to learn Japanese because of it, but have no idea where they should start. So why not a fully-fledged story-driven JRPG that gives you a nice start with the language itself?

Before I lose you with the education side of things, I want to tell you that the game itself is a game before anything else, not a flash-card application nor a voice recognition translator, but rather I have put the game, and therefore the gameplay, before anything else. This means it plays like a JRPG, there are random battles, bosses, a story, pets, wizards, cities, houses as well as cats and you will play through collecting items, experience points, weapons and everything else that comes with a traditional JRPG.

Who is it for?

It's for you! No, really, whether you have zero experience with the Japanese language or you are well versed and looking for a supplement for your studies, or just want to play a JRPG for old times' sake, then this is for you!

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/297265509/koe-a-jrpg-with-japanese-at-the-core-of-gameplay

Seeems interesting, tho I'm not sure I will bother backing it.
