Perhaps...yet they fully deserve it.

Anyway, this audit was commissioned by AMD and only one test is used (CRASH from Microsoft Windows Hardware Lab Kit), so I'll take this as pure PR, not how much those actual cards are prone to crashing in real games.

Link to actual paper:

https://www.amd.com/system/files/documents/graphics-driver-quality.pdf

I didn't realize it was a PR move from AMD. I noticed that the Nvidia cards weren't disclosed, but I took that as the authors (I've seen this story in more than one site) of the articles not wanting to start a war.

Shame on me.

I didn't realize it either, since article doesn't mention it, I had to go through comments to find out about actual source...talking about modern day "journalism" of some of the sites (though I'm surprised it's Guru3D no less, their reviews are pretty good)

I don't care much about smartphones, and I tend to upgrade only when the one I use starts to fail, so I only have two reasons to care about LPDDR5:

1) That means that DDR5 for PCs is getting closer, which is both good and bad, as always.

2) That kind of RAM paired with a tweaked Nvidia Xavier SoC (details were revealed yesterday, with 8 Carmel AMR64 CPU cores, 512 Volta GPU cores, 16GB 256-bit LPDDR4 memory interface and capable of operating at 10, 15 and/or 30W) would make for a great Switch 2, capable of offering equal or better graphics than PS4/X1. But I think this is not the best thread to talk about it.

I am a teach-enthusiast through and through. :P
Xavier+LPDDR5 with 100-200GB/s of bandwidth would be intense, but I don't expect that in a Switch successor, mostly because of how large and power hungry that chip is... And the fact it likely doesn't have an appropriate memory controller for LPDDR5 support anyway.

The real question is if desktop DDR5 will be deviating from LPDDR5 and to how much of an extent, keen for DDR5 to hurry up though, mostly for the benefits it brings to APU's.

I say...fuck them...for now.

I've been with ATI/AMD for a long, long time (my last nVidia card prior to them was GeForce4 Ti4400), and I finally decided last year to go back to nVidia. Once AMD get their shit together (when it comes to GPUs) and makes something actually worth buying again, I'll reconsider my decision.

AMD's GPU hardware leaves much to be desired, no doubt about it.
But on the driver front I find AMD's drivers to be a step up over nVidia's for the time being. (I say time being, because when AMD screws something up, they really screw something up.)
Of course I only have anecdotal experiences to go by with the nVidia and AMD GPU's at my disposal.

I also find nVidia's drivers to be a little more resource intensive than AMD's. - It's not so much of an issue on my faster rigs, but on the old Core 2 Quad rig, any CPU cycles I can spare is a good thing.
But if it weren't for nVidia... The fastest GPU I could drop in that rig would have been the Radeon R7 240 rather than the Geforce 1030, AMD is just to power hungry and have no low profile cards here.
So essentially I give up a bit of CPU time for a massive amount of GPU gain... It does mean that games like Overwatch that relies heavily on the CPU does struggle in intensive moments (I.E. 40fps), but games like Battlefield 1 runs great.

"NVIDIA mentioned that the Xavier SOC is built on a TSMC 12nm process node and houses 9 billion transistors crammed underneath a 350 mm2 die area."
You're going to need to do more than slightly tweak this to be able to put it into a Switch 2 type device.

https://www.gamersnexus.net/news-pc/2820-official-nvidia-gtx-1080-ti-specs-announced
Compare the die size and/or transistor count to a high end desktop GPU and you get a chip somewhere in-between a 1080 and a 1080Ti.

The CPU portion of the SoC would likely blow the Xbox One and PS4 out of the water.
It'd probably be close to a console generation's worth of power ahead of the CPUs in the 8th gen machines.
Though I've not seen any benchmarks.

Yes, it may have as much transistors as a "1085" card, but it has a max TDP of 30W, not 200. Chip size matters, but power consumptions matters too.

And let's not forget that an hypothetical Switch 2 with the Xavier SoC wouldn't run at its max 30W mode, but it's more likely to use the 15W one when docked, which is exactly what the actual Switch uses.

As for the tweaks I talk about...

Ubisoft reports record first quarter, PC sales surpass Xbox One
https://www.pcgamer.com/ubisoft-reports-record-first-quarter-pc-sales-surpass-xbox-one/
The first quarter of Ubisoft's 2018-19 fiscal year was a very good one for the company—a record-setter, in fact. Ubi reported sales of €400 million ($466 million) for the quarter, driven primarily by continued growth of digital sales and "player recurring investment" [PRI] in "digital items, DLC, season passes, subscriptions, and advertising."
And of course we don't want to overlook the PC's role in all of this: PC sales accounted for 24 percent of Ubisoft's total for the quarter, up from 21 percent of the first-quarter total in 2017-18 and behind only the PlayStation 4, which accounted for 38 percent of sales (down from 44 percent in Q1 2017-18). The Xbox One, which barely edged out the PC last year, came in third this time around, accounting for 22 percent of sales by platform.

World of Warcraft now supports DirectX 12, does no longer support fullscreen exclusive mode
https://www.dsogaming.com/news/world-of-warcraft-now-supports-directx-12-does-no-longer-support-fullscreen-exclusive-mode/
It appears that Blizzard has made some noteworthy rendering changes to World of Warcraft as this massive MMORPG does no longer support the DX9 API. Instead, the team has now added full support for Microsoft’s latest API, DirectX 12, meaning that players can now choose between DX11 and DX12.
While it appears that the team has not implemented any exclusive DX12 features or improvements, it’s a pretty cool addition. Also, do note that the DX12 mode is only available right now for AMD users. NVIDIA users can enable it, however performance takes a noticeable hit (so for now stick with DX11).
Blizzard has also removed the fullscreen exclusive mode that it supported before. As such, gamers can now choose between Windowed and Fullscreen Windowed. Moreover, the game has ditched its old “low, medium, high” settings and is now using sliders from 1 to 10.

Gearbox is seeking a 'Programming Copy Editor' to frag future typos
https://www.pcgamer.com/gearbox-is-seeking-a-programming-copy-editor-to-frag-future-typos/
Aliens: Colonial Marines suffered from a lot of issues, including wonky enemy AI that resulted in erratic and confused Xenomorph behavior. More than five years after it came out, someone discovered that the bad behavior could have been the result of a simple typo in the code.
Launching without that typo probably wouldn't have been enough to "save" the game but it sure would've helped, and so to ensure that something like this doesn't happen again, Gearbox has posted a job listing for a Programming Copy Editor. Copy editing, as defined by Wikipedia, "is the process of reviewing and correcting written material to improve accuracy, readability, and fitness for its purpose, and to ensure that it is free of error, omission, inconsistency, and repetition."

Overwatch's new hamster hero Wrecking Ball goes live next week

Another mech joins the Overwatch fray, but this time, there's a hamster in it. He's no jetpack cat, but Overwatch's second new hero for 2018, Wrecking Ball, is a furry little guy who pilots a spherical mech outfitted with a pair of giant machine guns. Oh, and he's live and playable on the Overwatch PTR right now. We've given the little guy a test drive, so if you're curious to know what he can do, we've compiled Wrecking Ball's abilities for easy viewing.
Update: The wait is almost over: Blizzard announced today that the wrongly-named rodent who drives a Dwemer Sphere in the increasingly strange universe of Overwatch is just one week away from leaving the PTR.

Star Citizen Kickstarter backer loses lawsuit pursuing $4,500 refund
https://www.pcgamer.com/star-citizen-kickstarter-backer-loses-lawsuit-pursuing-dollar4500-refund/
Star Citizen's Kickstarter raised over $2.1 million in 2012. Some of that was chipped in by Ken Lord, who was eager to play a successor to Wing Commander, a space combat sim by Chris Roberts, the designer leading Star Citizen's development. That was over five years ago. Today, not only is Star Citizen still in development (its Kickstarter delivery date originally suggested a late-2014 release), it's become a radically different game. Lord didn't like the direction the game was headed and was disappointed to see it go unfinished for so long, so he tried to get his Kickstarter pledge refunded.

Update: A representative from Bethesda commented on the Fallout: New California mod. Here's the full statement:
"The great thing about modding is that people can build mods about whatever they want. We don’t foresee an issue with this team’s work, and we wish them well in their development."

Valve will be present at Gamescom 2018
https://www.dsogaming.com/news/valve-will-be-present-at-gamescom-2018/
The official exhibitor list for Gamescom 2018 revealed that Valve will be present at this major gaming event. And before someone says it, no; the team will not announce or reveal Half-Life 3. So temper your expectations, especially you that thought that this would be THAT big moment, otherwise you will be disappointed.

I was *this* close to skip the news from PCGamer and never going back to that site again after finding out how some people over there use WASD, but after punching a wall several times, I decided to forget (that not forgive) that capital sin. So here's the second part of the news:

New Rainbow Six Siege patch nerfs and buffs nine operators
https://www.pcgamer.com/new-rainbow-six-siege-patch-nerfs-and-buffs-nine-operators/
Para Bellum’s big mid-season patch is on its way to Rainbow Six Siege, and with it a big balancing pass on nine operators. Many of these changes were previewed on last week’s test sever, but there’s plenty of new changes on the way.

Ubisoft is rethinking one of Rainbow Six Siege's most popular operators
https://www.pcgamer.com/ubisoft-is-rethinking-one-of-rainbow-six-sieges-most-popular-operators/
During a Reddit AMA discussing operator balance and today’s big 2.2 patch announcement for Rainbow Six Siege, Ubisoft devs from the balancing team shared some aspirations and hinted at a few plans for operators that are in the works. Most notably, Ubi is not happy with one of the most popular operators in the game: Thatcher.

Opus Magnum studio Zachtronics unveils its new hacking game Exapunks

Zachtronics, the maker of Spacechem, Ironclad Tactics, Shenzhen I/O, and most recently the outstanding Opus Magnum, is working on a new game called Exapunks. The year is 1997, and you're a former hacker with a bad case of the phage. There's only one thing to do: Read the zine—write a virus—get a dose.

For the first time, Square Enix is releasing a game on Steam exclusively in Japanese
https://www.pcgamer.com/for-the-first-time-square-enix-is-releasing-a-game-on-steam-exclusively-in-japanese/
The last few years have shown that Square Enix is devoted to the PC, releasing nearly the entire Final Fantasy back catalog and new JRPGs like Final Fantasy 15 and Dragon Quest 11 that would've once been console exclusives. Now, in what may be a sign that Japan's PC audience is growing, Square Enix is taking a first step: releasing a game on Steam exclusively in Japanese, without it being region-locked to Japan. SaGa Scarlet Grace is launching on Steam on August 1st, side-by-side with its console versions.

Overwatch's next update aims to balance the support class with a big Mercy nerf
https://www.pcgamer.com/overwatch-mercy-nerf-2018/
An upcoming Overwatch update will bring about some big balance changes to nearly all of the game's support heroes, in order to "keep them competitive with each other," developer Geoff Goodman revealed on the Blizzard forums today. And what that means, it seems, is buffing most of them and dialing back Mercy so that maybe someone else will get picked once in awhile.

This new fighting game wants to fill the void of Super Smash Bros. on PC
https://www.pcgamer.com/this-new-fighting-game-wants-to-fill-the-void-of-super-smash-bros-on-pc/
Fighting games like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat have found comfy homes on PC, and even Soul Calibur is making the jump in its next installment. But we're still lacking in platform fighters like Nintendo's Super Smash Bros., though Smash Bros. itself can of course be played on an emulator. Games like Brawlhalla have captured some of the same magic (and are plenty fun in their own right), but I reckon there's still a space for another great platform fighter. DimensionsVS, an upcoming free-to-play fighting game unashamedly styled after Smash, wants to fill that space.

Russian Subway Dogs, the game about Russian subway dogs, launches August 2
https://www.pcgamer.com/russian-subway-dogs-the-game-about-russian-subway-dogs-launches-august-2/
According to an ABC News report from 2010, homeless dogs in Moscow have figured out how to use the city's labyrinthine subway system. And that doesn't mean they've simply figured out how to board and alight subways – even cats can do that. No, these clever pups reportedly travel to the quieter suburbs to sleep, before trekking into the more populous areas by day to feed. They know what they're doing, in other words. Clever mongrels.
Thankfully, there's now a video game about the plight of Russia's subway dogs, and it's called Russian Subway Dogs. The trailer above serves as a mini-documentary outlining the plight of Russian subway dogs, while also providing a taster for what the game actually is. And what do you do in this dog-centric game? It hardly matters, does it? But if you must know, it's an arcade game where you'll be dodging lobbed bottles of vodka (incisive satire!) and barking at strangers to make them drop their food (now we're talking!).

Hoping Blizz does something similar for StarCraft, Diablo 3 and Overwatch, especially Overwatch, the reduced CPU overhead that DX12 brings would be great for the old spare rig.

Really?, so far DX 12 has hindered performance on my end with my CPU, not that it's old and ancient, but my 6700k has suffered performance losses when rolling with DX 12, let alone BWM, and WoW is already dated and somehow demands more power from my i7-6700k and GTX 1080ti at 1440p, which means DX 12 and no full screen mode means I'll suffer even more performance loss, which tells me to basically not play the game ever again.

I totally get old CPU's getting some form of boost out of this, but it's become annoying over the years to see DX 12 not giving a really good boost to current and new CPU's over DX 11, let alone staying at the same performance level.

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

Depends on the game/benchmark in question of course and what hardware you run with.
A 6700K wouldn't need the reduced CPU draw call overhead of Direct X 12 as much as say... The Core 2 Quad Q9650 I have, you already have 3x the CPU performance to start with.

Then you have the driver/GPU side of the equation, AMD seems to play better with Direct X 12, especially in games that leverage asynchronous compute.
