it really isn't news of any kind... it is barely even growth...

as long as they aren't growing as fast as apple or google, than it really isn't good news at all for microsoft...

basically, the esteemed firm Gartner is saying that Windows devices will grow about 11% from 2013 to 2014, which isnt bad at all.  If they can do this on a permanent basis, they should in fact win in the end, bc these things are marathon races, not sprints.

Also, you point out the 11% growth of Windows while ignoring the 22% for Android and 20% for Apple.

Which goes directly opposite of your statement and actually shows that they are going to continue to lose marketshare every year. I guess its good they are projecting an increase where they actually had a decrease last year.


Well, it depends on how you define growth, as I meant it in the OP, I was using growth in numbers of units, not actual market share.

Even then Android is growing by 194,489 units to Windows 38,597.

Fact is, Android's growth this year alone is more than 1/2 of all windows devices being sold for the entire year.

As I said, growth is good and I'm sure MS is happy that its projected to up instead of decline again. (I disagree personally as I think it will continue to decline.)

But, with still projected loss in marketshare, MS has to be worried long-term. To me they have to consider what happened to RIM. As Android continues to grow and begin its march onto desktops (HP and others now have full desktops running Android), MS will continue to go downward. Kinda hard to fight two massive competitors with Apple (a known force continuing to grow) and Google (a new kid with amazing growth).

It's kinda funny that you don't realize that dallas is an even bigger Google enthusiast than yourself. His OP is just bait so he can show a projection that puts Android way out ahead of Windows. Hence all the setups and spikes.

These Gartner projections are all kinds of flakey, anyway. They always acknowledge the current trend, but strangely in the long term everything growing quickly slows down and everything that's shrinking returns to modest growth. Everything regresses to mean. Insightful!

As I writing my last post, I was thinking this very same thing. Decided to post it anyways as a farewell to the thread. The images are exactly what made me think I was being used in some sort of game.

These projections are only a year or so in advance but if other indicators are to be beleived, then MSFT could very well be on the road to domination, in short time. 

Why? How? 

Well if MSFT's stock price is anything to take notice of, things are looking up for them.
