Which series is bigger now?

Zelda 34 29.82%

People should stop saying Zelda sales are shrinking or even diminishing. This isn't true. Only Skyward Sword had disappointing sales with 3.5 millions sold. But Twilight Princess was the record of the serie with 8 millions solds, more than OOT.

Animal crossing has a bigger potential on handhel, as it is the perfect handheld game, and on handheld it will remain a 10+ million franchise. Zelda can't sell these numbers, but Zelda has a very strong and dedicated following. Even a Zelda remake of OOT sold more than 3 millions. The DS episode sold 3 and 5 millions respectively. The power of the brand is still superior to AC by quite a good margin.

AC will sell way more on HD, where it is the killer app, while Zelda will sell much more Wii U than a AC Wii U version.

I agree with you, but I believe that Zelda moves more consoles than Animal Crossing. The reason is that Zelda is a rare commodity (epic adventure), whereas AC is part of a cornucopia of casual offerings on Nintendo systems.

AC on hand helds moves a shitload.  Just look at the recent figures and go back to last year around Nov when it launched in Japan.  AC moves hand helds.  Biggest system seller than almost any IP on hand helds.

Okay, but you're only telilng half the story. How many Wii units did Twilight Princess push, how many 3DS units did OoT 3D push? With games on legs like those two it really is hard to judge.

It appeals to a broader audience but certainly isn't a bigger game in terms of quality and level of passion from real gamers.

Id go to say their in the same tier list neck and neck,LOZ has strong sales but hasnt had great timing as of late of their releases. I mean look at Skyward Sword, released during a flat falling of the Wii console and then LOZ OoT a remake released when the 3DS was and see how the 3DS struggled the first few months?

The next LOZ thats coming this year for the 3DS will match AC NL pound for pound IMO!

Do you actually believe ALBW will compete with New Leaf?

I don't think it will even be close...at all.

Quality? Passion? Real gamers?

... ... ...

All those words are based on your opinion and I respect the way you feel but that can't be measured, at all. I don't like Zelda nearly as much as AC so does that mean I'm not a "real gamer"?

... What about Mario Kart and Smash Bros.? Or the Wii_ games like Fit, Sports and Party? Or even the DK games? Compared to those franchises, Zelda is pretty niche, sales-wise. I mean, take Mario Kart; it's the very definition of a system seller.

Zelda's a bit like Metroid, albeit to a much lesser extent, in that it's seen as an important franchise for Nintendo, while in reality, it's not that big a big seller at all.

I was counting Mario Kart in with the Mario IP. If you wanted to seperate them, then Mario Kart is above everything including Pokemon. Animal Crossing Wild World outsold every SSB game and New Leaf will likely do the same. Since SSB4 will have 2 versions and its first HH, it will make things more clear. I'd bet that AC New Leaf, and ACU will outsell SSBU & SSB3D. Wii Series hasn't had enough time to say. First off, its exclusive to their home systems. Also, we have yet to see if the series success will carry over to Wii U. I think it'll be successful but not nearly as big as before. Donkey Kong? AC is definitely past that one.

AC WW sold 11.86m. AC CF on Wii sold 4.45m. The other 2 under 4m (although New Leaf is of course still selling a lot).

The 4 topselling DK games all sold over 5 million (DKCR on Wii almost 6m) the bestselling one close to 10m, even. Plus, there are a TON of DK games, compared to AC. I'd say DK is a far more recognizable franchise than AC, as well. I daresay the DK franchise is at least very, very comparable to AC, if not bigger. Not to downplay AC of course, but that's just using the hard numbers.

As for Smash, yes AC WW outsold all of them, but only barely. All Smash games sold more than all AC games, except for WW. Just 'cos one version of a franchise outsold most games in another franchise doesn't mean it's bigger.

Also, yeah I get why you were counting Mario Kart as part of the Mario franchise, but I don't really think that's fair.

I agree, you can't count just one game. At the same time, Pokemon sells like crap on consoles these days but it's still highly noticed because of its HH games. New Leaf has already sold 4 Million if we count digital sales, but obviously going by VGC numbers, it hasn't yet. I think NL will sell 10 Million+ as well and if 3DS explodes eventually, I don't think 15 Million is out of the question.

Donkey Kong is definitely more recognized as a character but to be fair, he has appeared in tons of games. Animal Crossing doesn't exactly have a face that people can recognize. Smash Bros 4 will be the 1st game where the Villager is playable in a non-AC game. So as a character, yes. I don't think his own games are nearly as big as himself though. Kind of like how Yoshi is well-known but not for his games.

To be fair, AC probably isn't in the Top 3 yet but the potential is definitely there. Some people might laugh but I actually believe that if Nintendo plays its cards right, Animal Crossing can be up there with Mario & Pokemon one day.
