I say ditch the gamepad (make it optional) and re-introduce it with an enhanced Wiimote-nunchuk that has enough buttons/sticks that the pro controller isn't ever needed (and maybe a small touch screen, why not?) with a proper follow-up to Wii Sports or some other novel Wii entry and a reduced price point (which ditching the gamepad will help accomplish) and I'll buy it immediately.

Ditching the gamepad is lunacy as the whole console is based on the gamepad!!! Might as well say add an extra-core to the CPU and increase the RAM (well it happened to the PSP so why not?) to 3GB or 4GB.  Nintendo just needs to add value to the console either by a price cut or more bundles. For goodness sake they need to market that console right also!!!

I hear that, but I think the entire gamepad concept (after Wii) was lunacy to begin with and we are talking a relaunch here.   And sure more power would be great! Even if it meant keeping the current price.   But I maintain the gamepad is a greater hinderence to sales than it'll ever be a sales driver.  If WiiU is to ever 'catch on' the gamepad must go.    Otherwise, let me know when Wii3 arrives.

It's Nintendo's fault for not marketing the console properly instead of the gamepad concept.  If you have the system you will realize how well the Gamepad works with the whole console.  It's hard to go back to my X360's UI after the gamepad tbh.  Ditching the gamepad would be akin to people saying the 3DS should just ditch the 3D aspect of the 3DS (which would make the name 3DS moot to begin with...lunacy I say).  TO THIS DAY I have people going to Best Buy and Costco asking if they could pick up the gamepad for their regular Wii as Nintendo's stupid ass marketing team didn't differientiate the console from the Wii well enough.

A huge problem is the games all look like Wii games.  NSMBU looks like a Wii game, so does NintendoLand (outside of the controller obviously), Pikmin 3, Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros, Super Mario World 3D, the new DK game, SMT vs FE, etc., etc., all look like they could have should have been Wii games (albeit without the HD graphics).   The fact that WiiU doesn't upscale my Wii games nor will allow off-TV play with Wii/VC/WW games (that don't use motion/IR) is also a huge detriment.  Also if I could have finally played games like Assasin's Creed with motion controls/IR would have been a huge selling feature.     The gamepad just doesn't add enough to any of these games to justify buying another system to play them.  I have Batman, etc on 360....  I would have bought many of Nintendo's games current or upcoming if they released on Wii but I don't want a WiiU, it's just not compelling and no bundle will make it so.

At the very least Nintendo needs to make use of the HD graphics and power of WiiU with more games like X.   I'd love to see Endless Ocean in HD and Metroid and Zelda (without a cartoon style, with a cartoon style it hardly matters).   But these games aren't even announced, nor will the likely even come close to using the power of the WiiU when they are.   They'll likely be Wii games in HD.      And yes, I have the same regard for PS4/XB1 currently as far as merely running prettier PS360 games.  Not interested.

The 3DS manges to outsell the PS3 2:1 every week, so that is a little better than slightly.  The DS was just a monster but it's hardware was more limiting during it's time than the 3DS is right now.  Thus, my second point is that the 3DS will last a couple of years longer than the DS did especially considering that it's main competitor is all but being shelved by the industry.  That's why Nintendo needs to act now to avoid the same fate as the Vita!!!  Sony took too long to make the Vita competitive and thus the system paid the price and headed towards obscurity.  A price cut this September would greatly change the fate of the console and give it a fighting chance at being modestly succesful. (40-50mil units sold)  A delay of doing that risks the system to going the same route as Sony's failing handheld; which is going to be much more costly to reverse it's fortunes than an early price cut!!!

2:1? Since when? This week was because of the amazingness that is Animal Crossing. Look below: (WE = Week Ending)

  • WE 4/6) 3DS: 165K & PS3: 153K (12K difference)
  • WE 4/13) 3DS: 142K  & PS3: 146K (PS3 won by 4K)
  • WE 4/20) 3DS: 178K & PS3: 139K (39K difference)
  • WE 4/27) 3DS: 154K  & PS3: 136K (18K difference)
  • WE 5/4) 3DS: 167K & PS3 130K (37K difference)
  • WE 5/11) 3DS: 138K & PS3: 120K (18K difference)
  • WE 5/18) 3DS: 130K & PS3: 126K (4K difference)
  • WE 5/25) 3DS: 139K & PS3: 131K (8K difference)
  • WE 6/1) 3DS: 129K & PS3: 129K (Tie)
  • WE 6/8) 3DS: 123K & PS3: 121K (2K difference)

As you can see, 3DS only slightly outsells the PS3 which was released in 2006. It is doing decent but no where near what it could be if the price was better. Again, all of Nintendo's past HH's launched at a lower price than the 3DS is currently.

Spring 2014

3DS: $140 & 3DSXL: $170 or maybe even another re-design?

I dunno, they have until November to turn it around. Because im afraid the Wiiu mentality will be set in stone after PS4/X1 release.

Set in stone? Who says the PS4 or XB1 will kill off Wii U? The system hasn't had a game since launch and everybody is already prepared to call it a failure.

um...obviously you haven't seen those games or owned a Wii or a Wii U for that matter.  The underlined part SHOWS THAT YOU DON'T OWN A WII U as the console upscales quite nicely and noticeable. I don't want to derail the thread with Wii U next gen or not but the system itself is great.  Play Trine 2, Nano Assault,  Assasin's Creed, and Ninja Gaiden (espcially Ninja Gaiden screen tears etc are all improved) and try saying the Wii U games look like Wii games.  As for X1/PS4 there is a modest increase in visuals but not to the level of Wii to Wii U games!!!

ok point taken.  as I said I look at Japan numbers as VGC numbers are bogus especially since they can't track DD anymore.

Add a bigger HDD, 32gb is just laughable.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

It does suck that VGC can't track downloads but I understand as that is likely difficult to do. We still get a decent estimate. Plus, systems can't be sold digitally so those #'s are still as accurate as they've always been (take from that as you will) so it still doesn't explain why you don't take the system #'s seriously. (Serious as in accurate, not that anyone actually feels like dying if there favorite system doesn't sell well)

No offense but making random claims like your "2:1" comment, will make people think you have no idea what you're talking about. Just letting you know for future reference :)

Anyway, this thread is about the Wii U which again, mainly needs games.

I'm not talking about those games (I have a 360 for them) I'm talking Nintendo's games which really don't look significantly better in HD (to me) not enough that I'll shell out  $350 (or even $250) to play different versions of basically the same games in HD.   I'd sooner have them on Wii.     I have about 300 games on Wii and numerous games on 360, so I know the difference between say Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands on Wii and AC3 on 360.   But I have a 360.  So why do I need a WiiU for that?  I don't.   And NSMBU in HD is yawn worthy.

Now if WiiU upscales Wii games to HD that is of interest to me but I've been told that is doesn't (and in fact can't because Wii games are only playable on the completely seperate Wii interface which is still 480p).    If this is wrong, I'll be happy to revisit the matter, but it's still annoying WiiU won't allow for off-TV play of those games (where it makes sense - Xenoblade for instance) which would go a long way to justifying it's price.

I understand.  Though I just want to point out that those games play better on the Wii U than on my X360 esp Trine2 and NG looks noticeable.  As forthe upscaling here:
