slash 100 bucks from the consoles price and make it drop to 199$ and 249$ along side sonic lost world, the 3d mario game, pikmin, W101 and WiiU fit releasing and you got yourself some pretty decent sales right there

I don't think Nintendo could afford to cut the price that much.  I believe at most they could reduce the price by $50 for both SKU or make the deluxe the only option at $300 (the most logical solution) to coincide with a major launch (preferably a Mario title but the combo of Pikmin3, Sonic, Wonderful 101, and Rayman will have to do.) to regain/jump start momentum.

there's also the fact that the more time Nintendo has to reduce manufacturing costs, the better.

My idea would be to drop the price to $ 250 rather than just to $ 300, but doing it next year alongside Smash and Mario Kart, so to give the platform a more meaningful and lasting effect. Striking while the iron is hot, so to speak, with a combined effect within a small time frame to get the full attention of consumers.

If you drop the price now or for the holidays, then by this time next year the new price is old news, and another $ 50 price cut then wouldn't be as significant as the first one. And Microsoft and Sony will definitely be more agressive next year in terms of pricing and bundles as more of their key releases appear, so the competition will be much stronger then.

I never really took manufacturing costs into consideration so nice point there. It would probably help Nintendo a lot from a business standpoint to wait until next year to lower the price. At the same time, you go on to say that they should drop it next year by $100 instead of $50 this year. That would make your manufacturing point invalid because they likely can't get the cost down that much by Spring.

I guess the GP is into the whole idea of getting a good deal so a Price Cut along with Mario Kart 8 would create the illusion of a good deal even though the price would be the same if it was reduced now rather than later. In reality, it would make no difference but to the average consumer, maybe it would.

Another issue I have with waiting is the 3DS. I know that they are different markets but they still will compete with each other. I think a 3DS price cut is due in Spring 2014 to help boost its sales after the Pokemom momentum fades.

The 3DS needs a price cut?  I think not!!! The system is selling quite well so I don't see Nintendo having the need to cut the price of the system.  Nintendo, needs to generate enough profit to satisfy those grumpy analyst and shareholders.  They are releasing great games that would help the system sell without the need for a price cut.  The Wii U on the other hand is desperate for both a price cut and influx of great games.

No - Nintendo just needs to buy more studios and make more games under their quality control umbrella

Games can and should tell stories and share ideas through their mechanics. This is the intrinsic element of the medium and this is how experiences should be crafted in video games. No company does this as well as Nintendo and their echoes from the past.

You need an option for "shudder it's console division and start making games for the real next gen consoles.... That's the one I'd choose.

umm...the Wii U is a next gen system for Nintendo.  If you are comparing it in terms of capabilities, it's a transitional console like the Dreamcast, but with the backing of a company with more broad appeal of IPs and vast resources compared to Sega.

Buying studios is somewhat moot, when developers could jump ship and move to diffrent companies.   Developing new IPs or buying old one for dirt cheap and developing them in-house is a better option.  I say Bonk is a ripe to be sold to Nintendo seeing Konami doesn't make games anymore except for MGS.

3DS is doing pretty well all things considered but could be doing much better. 3DS is #1 every week but only manages to slightly outsell PS3 which was released in 2006. Yes, it sells well and easily kills the Vita (its main competition) but at its current rate it will likely sell worse than any previous Nintendo HH.

The DS had 6 full years as Nintendo's HH system. Say 3DS continues to sell 14 Million or so a year. It will sell about 84 Million lifetime. It will likely do more this year but less near the end, total sales are looking to be between 70 & 80 Million. Still great but could be much more.

A price cut in Spring 2014 would be 3 years after launch and 2 1/2 after the first price cut. A small one will help a lot and the benefits will outweigh the lost $ on system profit.

I disagree with the whole "smartphones killed HH gaming" thing. Yes, smartphones sell much better but what would you expect? A dedicated HH can still sell extremely well. The 3DS price is still higher than the launch price of all previous Nintendo HH's despite the massive $80 drop. The sales have a ton of room for improvement.

I say ditch the gamepad (make it optional) and re-introduce it with an enhanced Wiimote-nunchuk that has enough buttons/sticks that the pro controller isn't ever needed (and maybe a small touch screen, why not?) with a proper follow-up to Wii Sports or some other novel Wii entry and a reduced price point (which ditching the gamepad will help accomplish) and I'll buy it immediately.
