Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft to invest $700 million in new data centre to support cloud service & Xbox Live

Are these 300,000 physical dedicated servers or 300,000 virtual servers?

Virtual... makes no sense 300k physical dedicated hardware... but that not make any difference after all because what you see in the client side is a BIG UNIQUE server the MS apps that make the automatic loud balance between the 300k servers.

Edit - Maybe is just 300k machine added to cloud too... fixed my first comment.

I am waiting for this Braid dev. calling this one fake.
He must know best, he made a $10 XBLA game!

haha

Sounds good to me. And looks like MS's cloud tech will be much better then the competition.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

This is why the "Sony has the cloud too" comments are so misinformed. This is a HUGE investment and you don't here anything like this from Sony.

The cloud IS an advantage for the X1. Reports like this make that clear.

Great Xbox news=1 page? Rumors multiple?

This data centre is almost certainly going to be used for a lot more than gaming though. This is a big part of Microsoft's business and gaming is only one aspect of it.

If Sony wanted to they could setup their own dedicated gaming servers (which they are probably doing for Gaikai) or simply use existing infrastructure from other companies (e.g. Amazon, Google, or possibly even Microsoft themselves... which would be ironic for Sony fans) for cloud services. Microsoft may have the infrastructure in place but it wouldn't be difficult for Sony or specific publishers to implement these services themselves. The result on the end-user wouldn't be significantly different.

This isn't really great Xbox news, more great news for Microsoft as a whole. It's also not really telling people more than we'd already guessed; Microsoft need to invest with all their planned Xbox Live expansions. There's not a whole lot to discuss or argue over.

The number of virtual servers is scalable, so they must be physical.

How would you know? Why does MS talk about "300k virtualised servers"? If those were really 300k physical units, why wouldn't they announce "Three million servers" or something to the tone of it, would sound much more impressive, wouldn't it? What about those people who live outside of Iowa - in Europe, Australia, Asia? Good look with pings to Iowa....
