Microsoft has confirmed it will invest around $700 million in a new data centre in Des Moines, Iowa. The facility will support the growing demand for Microsoft’s cloud computing services and Xbox Live moving forward, a Microsoft exec has stated.

GI.biz reports that the investment will take Microsoft’s total spend in the region to around $1 billion.

In a statement sent to the Des Moines Register, general manager of Microsoft’s data centre services Christian Belady said that the investment “supports the growing demand for Microsoft’s cloud services.”

The news follows Microsoft’s statement that Xbox Live will be spread across some 300,000 by the time its next-gen console launches in November.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has denied a November 27 release date for Xbox One.

It seems they're going all in. This gen will be interesting.

well anybody doubting that hasn't followed MS for the past 20+ years.... their cloud infrastructure will be as important to them than the MS office department if it's not already the case.... and on top of it it will be relevant to them for several department at the same time.... investment will be there....no question about it....

Not just for gaming no, but 300,000 dedicated to Xbox. The entire network will be much bigger.

Are these 300,000 physical dedicated servers or 300,000 virtual servers?

well im glad they diversifying the data center. Otherwise with all the PR nightmare of the xbox one and if it does end up selling like crap investors are not going to want another console after that.

Will be iteresting what else their cloud services will offer, in particular for PCs.

The number of virtual servers is scalable, so they must be physical.
