Forums - Sony - Ellen Page claims Naughty Dog “ripped off” her likeness

It was a surprisingly bitter comment from Ellen Page that I honestly wasn't expecting from her. At the end of the day, it was merely a simple response to a fan question, which I think both the media and fans/haters are blowing well out of proportion (people are making it out as if she brought up the subject herself, or is planning to sue). It's just a shame, because we should be celebrating Ashley Johnson's performance, rather than arguing over how much Ellie looks like Ellen Page (a comparison that hasn't really been mentioned on these forums since Naughty Dog altered Ellie's appearance a while back).

Their likeness isn't uncanny.  Uncanny, meaning perfect, and the likeness isn't anywhere near close to perfect.  He looks as similar to Drake as Jason Statham looks to Cutter.  Bruce Cambpell is a closer similarity to Sully than Nathan Fillion is to Drake or even Ellen Page is to Ellie.

You are using the internet and you have access to google yet you give me a false definition of uncanny. They do have an uncanny resemblance...

When I said it means perfect, I wasn't describing it's meaning, I was describing its meaning in the way that you used it.  I didn't word what I said properly.  An uncanny likeness would mean a perfect likeness.  "being beyond what is normal or expected."  Characters from Mass Effect have uncanny likenesses, as does Jodie Holmes from Beyond Two Souls.

While I also know what you're trying to point out as you used the words other definition, you also used poor wording as well.  "Their likeness is uncanny and their names are also the same."  You broke it into two different statements in the same sentence clearly saying the "likeness" was uncanny.  Their likeness is uncanny with the coincidental use of the same name or however you wanted to word it would have been better to get the point across that you meant both the name and how the character looks.  I'm not being a grammar nazi or anything like that, especially since I'm not really good at writing either, but I just wanted to point out that you didn't make yourself clear.

*edit*

Btw.  I know someone who has the same similarities as Cutter and Jason Statham.  I'll try to get a picture and post it alongside the pictures of Cutter and Jason.  Similarites do not equal character likeness because I'm sure if we looked hard enough we'd find a celebrity likeness in just about every  game that's been released this gen.

I feel kind of bad arguing with you, but I can't get myself to back off. Sorry, but first of all, uncanny still does not mean a perfect likeness. An uncanny likeness is just as you said, "being beyond what is normal or expected. Secondly, that sentence that you tried to fix would not work the way you suggested. Their names do not bear an uncanny resemblance. Their names are the same. The name Nathan does not have an uncanny resemblance to Nathan. The name Nathan is the same as Nathan.

I like the people who think it's a coincidence.  I mean... look at the name.  "Ellie?"

It'd be like if there was a guy in a video game who looked exactly like Will Smith, but he was named Bill.  TOTAL coincidence.

I mean, lets be real for once here people.

That said.  Who cares?

I mean if anybody has a real beef it's Albert Einstein's family.

Taking character designs from real people is pretty much just what animators do.

90% of the comments in this thread are ridiculous. You guys make it sound like she told ND to go fuck themselves. Calm down people.

And the original Ellie does look a lot like her, which is why ND changed her.

I think it's more like you don't expect something like this from Ellen. It as nothing to do with ND.

Expect this from her? Seeing as how I've never met her and have only seen one movie she was in (Juno, which was overrated imo), you can't say I expect anything from her. Are you one of "those" people that think you know a person based on what you've seen in movies or television? If so, I'm ashamed of you sir.

Yes she is blatently a copy of Juno. I thought that was obvious to all.

Nevermind.

Video game companies have been doing this forever:

And Ellie is definitely Ellen.  And Ellie is not a "generic" little girl.  You see that picture, you know it's the Last of Us.  Her distinctive image is the trademark of the game.  And Ellie's hair, eyes, eybrows, lips, jawline, cheekbones... they are all Ellen.  They changed her slightly in the final version to make it less obvious.

She has that gormless everybody look. 'Her' likeness doesn't exist, it's an everybody look. Probably how Ellie ended up looking how she has.

The defensiveness of this whole thread is hilarious, but this "You don't even have a likeness" defense just takes the cake.

I whole heartidly agree. It's even a sickening defense. Literally my stomach pinches me everytime someone uses it.
