Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo 3DS was the best-selling console in May

Not a surprise.

Also, I hope they know that Pikmin 3 isn't a 3DS game. Since it seems this article is talking exclusively about the 3DS, I don't see how a Wii U game got mixed up in there...

Yeah when I saw that I was like, Pikmin is multi plat? WAHT?

Did 3DS just break 360's perfect streak that spanned dozens of momths?

The handheld industry has shrunk big time, forget comparing with the DS, it's a good deal lower than the PSP at a similar point in their life cycles (roughly 2 years into launch, same month of May used for comparison):

3DS (May 2013) - 114k

PSP (May 2007) - 221k

Just for those who are curious DS sold 430k+ that May 2007.

Yes it's nice that it barely eeked out the 7+ year old 360 as people are turning their attention to its successor, but it's not neccessarily something to throw a party about either. 3DS is struggling to increase momenteum year over year, and the portable market in general is really hurting in North America.

Are you sure you're not comparing US numbers with WW numbers? NPD is only the US market.

wernt you the guy that said that april is the exception for te 3ds and it wont increase yoy again? lol it did it again btw this month. and wernt you the guy that said 3ds would never be on top of npd? Well it is :

I wonder what youll say next month when it increases yoy in software sales, hardware sales, and reaches over 200k and is first again,

This will probably develop into a trend. 360 has few or no significant exclusives remaining. 3DS is growing nicely, getting ready to explode with Animal Crossing, a few smaller games, and then Pokémon and Zelda.

I never said it wouldn't be at the top of the NPD. It's competetion are 7 and 6 year old pieces of hardware who've just had their successors announced, it's bound to eek out some victories.

It's barely increasing year over year, it's basically flat. Last May was 113.5k according to the leaks, so lol, it increased by a whopping 500 units. That's statisical noise, not an increase.

It isn't performing that great in the West, even Iwata has said that, why don't you rag on him too. 114k is simply not that great of a number. If that's the best selling platform, that tells me the industry is hurting badly right now.

It should get an OK boost for Animal Crossing, but I think the problems the industry is having right now are systemic, not just because of 1 missing game.

People should prepare themselves for a generation where no hardware tops 300k in a month outside of the holiday quarter (unless there are very special circumstances) and where 200k+ already constitutes an exceptionally good performance. The economy is in a dire state, the wealth of the masses is decreasing and none of the five eighth generation systems were designed to sell under such conditions.

The scary thing is 3DS + Vita + Wii U combined (the three newest pieces of hardware) can barely muster 165k for an entire month combined.

That is down right unbelievable.

Even the PSP alone 1-2 years into its life span was doing better than that alone.

If it's doing well now, keep a look out when Pokemon XY, Zelda LttP 2 and MH4 release....money flying everywhere.
