Forums - General Discussion - Which resolution should I get with new HDTV?

Im planning on replacing my EDTV with an hdtv for my room. My other hdtv in my living room supports up to 720p. Should I get a 720p and save money or get a 1080p but at a higher price. IS there any major difference in quality. Should I just stay with my EDTV and its 480p.

no major difference, if you can afford it go with 1080p.

Well, if it won't break your budget 1080p would be the way to go-- but 720pwould still be a great picture.

What do yo plan on using it for? that really is an important question.
also, how much space do you have?
How far away from the tv will you be?

edit: dangit I keep thinking of questions to ask...... I need a new job

Do you prefer a larger screen or a higher resolution?

Games,Maybe I would hook my computer up to it and blu ray. About 10ft at most. OH and I have quite some space.  Edit... It matters how much of a difference I would get with the higher resolution. If its a little more detailed then a larger screen if its alot more I would pick the smaller screen.

blu-ray?? well then you really might want to get 1080p. Anyone upgrading to Blu-ray right now is probably a videophile-- or at least that is what is usually the case. Not everyone can see a difference between 720p and 1080p. I would suggest that as you are checking prices really try to see the difference between the two. Make sure that the difference in picture justifies the monetary difference for you.

A smaller screen is also going to be better if you don't have much space.

don't hook-up a blu-ray to a 480p. You could save a lot of money and get a dvd player instead.

Oh and don't buy cables at the store!!! There was a thread about this recently. Go online and check for cable prices. Ask Twesterm, entroper, or rocketpig if you need a site recommendation.

Well blu ray was free with the ps3 I have so why not. That is why I have my ps3 hooked up to my HDTV in the living room rather than my EDTV.

I am not saying don't get a ps3/blu-ray just if you do upgrade make sure you don't have it on sdtv. As it is in the living room than that should be fine.

If it's a larger tv, 1080p is the way to go. The difference is noticeable on a 40 in. screen from 10 ft. away, and is very noticeable on a 50+ in. screen from 10 feet away.

Or at least it's noticeable to me...

It sounds like you would benefit from a 1080p display vs. 720p.
