Forums - Sony - Wall Street Journal :"PS4 Demand Exceeding Sony's Expectations"

And so continues the "curse of the 3rd console" in the gaming industry.

It never ceases to amaze me how at the start of every single generation without fail, one of the major console manufacturers will inevitably shoot itself in the foot with a combination of arrogance and incredibly boneheaded decision making.

SEGA did it with the Saturn in '95.

Nintendo with the N64 in '96, and now three generations later they've done it again with the Wii U(!)

Sony did it with the PS3 in '06.

And now M$ has done it with the Xbone.

When will the madness stop?!?

This is flawed because the original Xbox wasn't a success, it sold 24M and ended up in a very distant second place, for the XBone to be the third console curse then the previous two consoles should have been a success.

^more importantly, the first Xbox made massive loses for Microsoft.

So estimates were 16million for Consoles PS3+PS4 a while back
Then 10million for PS3.
6million PS4 for FY, even more?

7.256million?

Sony is not making 1.2 million PS4's per month, that AINT going to happen no matter how hard they try. Realalistically you are looking at 3 million by launch at most 3.5 million for 2013. Unless they started production in March.

Most people who want a PS4 will have to wait well into 2014 to get one, Asia and Japan will be a no go for 2013, they will soon come to that conclusion , this thing is going to sell out Nov-Dec in the west.

Sony and the media are already saying they most likly wont meet demand 2 days after console reveal, lol, they priced too low because demand is now out of control. They should push retailers to offer mandatory bundles of a game and a camera to push the price up to $500 just to keep demand in check. Screw it, at this point you might aswell gouge a lil.

Perfect example as to why Apple charge crazy prices for their goods, keeps demand in check, yet even then they run into stock issues (Apple was a bad example, but y'all get what i am saying). Not to mention 6 million consoles sold and they dont know their failure rate outside of the lab, it could hurt them if they have an issue, an early call back on 4-5% will be a disaster.

This is good news for Sony, bad news for the silly people that have yet to preorder, you aint getting a PS4 in 2013 otherwise.

Not necessarily... the Xbox managed to beat out Nintendo's offering while essentially selling in only one region (NA), and it allowed M$ to gain a foothold in the console industry and served as a springboard for the 360... something that no one thought possible when the Xbox was originally announced.  But if you really want to argue your point, SEGA is a better example because the MasterSystem wasn't a success (a minor one in Japan maybe), but that didn't stop them from trying to one-up Nintendo in the 16-bit gen.

What I consider the "curse of the 3rd console" to be is that the 3rd console released by a manufacturer has always been a relatively big letdown in terms of sales and support compared to its predecessor, i.e...

Genesis > Saturn, SNES > N64, PS2 > PS3, Wii > Wii U, and now it appears, barring something drastic, that 360 > Xbone.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Original Xbox managed to beat Nintendo, end in second place and become the online multiplayer console but it also lost billion of dollars if we want to count that as success then we should also count the PS3 as a success since its in a not so distant second place right now (with a small posibility of finishing in first) even though it also lose billion of dollars.

About Sega I really don't know if the master system was a financial success for them I guess it was because they released the MD .

If they really want to gouge, how about throwing in a Vita bundle.

^This.  I love my Vita and was really excited when they started pushing it as the perfect PS4 companion, especially with remote play on all PS4 games (please work).

Phase 1: Ensure Vita Remote Play works well with all PS4 titles outside of motion games
Phase 2: Have default control mapping to Dualshock 4, allow custom control mapping
Phase 3: ???
Phase 4: Profit!
