And so continues the "curse of the 3rd console" in the gaming industry.

It never ceases to amaze me how at the start of every single generation without fail, one of the major console manufacturers will inevitably shoot itself in the foot with a combination of arrogance and incredibly boneheaded decision making.

SEGA did it with the Saturn in '95.

Nintendo with the N64 in '96, and now three generations later they've done it again with the Wii U(!)

Sony did it with the PS3 in '06.

And now M$ has done it with the Xbone.

When will the madness stop?!?

This is flawed because the original Xbox wasn't a success, it sold 24M and ended up in a very distant second place, for the XBone to be the third console curse then the previous two consoles should have been a success.

Not necessarily... the Xbox managed to beat out Nintendo's offering while essentially selling in only one region (NA), and it allowed M$ to gain a foothold in the console industry and served as a springboard for the 360... something that no one thought possible when the Xbox was originally announced.  But if you really want to argue your point, SEGA is a better example because the MasterSystem wasn't a success (a minor one in Japan maybe), but that didn't stop them from trying to one-up Nintendo in the 16-bit gen.

What I consider the "curse of the 3rd console" to be is that the 3rd console released by a manufacturer has always been a relatively big letdown in terms of sales and support compared to its predecessor, i.e...

Genesis > Saturn, SNES > N64, PS2 > PS3, Wii > Wii U, and now it appears, barring something drastic, that 360 > Xbone.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.
