Our very own Anthony Severino was able to be a part of a roundtable with Adam Boyes, VP of Publisher Relations at SCEA today, with a whole bunch of different topics being discussed, and one of them was all about the PS4 and its RAM.

For Adam personally, his “favorite moment was getting to announce to the whole developer community that we had double the RAM to 8GB of GDDR5,” because they did originally have 4GB of GDDR5 on the system.

Recounting the story of how they went from 4GB to 8GB, Adam was actually at Gearbox (Borderlands), with Randy Pitchford, President of Gearbox, telling him, “If you go with 4GB of GDDR5, you are done.” Following that statement, Boyes says that the entire room of about 30 people added in that “you guys, you never listen, you’ve never been good at this stuff.”

After hearing this, Adam says he had a mini-breakdown, and it wasn’t until he reflected on this and asked himself the question, “Are we going to be the best console in every single category?” before things started moving, because “the answer used to be no.”

So, Adam went back to the developers about the possibility of doing 8GB of RAM, getting responses like “that would be incredible.” He then took all the feedback to Tokyo, got the thumbs up, and the rest is history.

Wow, so it's like last gen when Unreal told Microsoft to double their ram in the 360. Good that they listened to devs.

I really liked Adam Boyes from the conference and the hilarious "PS4 disc sharing" video. He looks like a funny, nerdy guy, not some corporate white-collar. They fit with Yoshida, they seem to have similar sense of humor and look really funny together :D

As for the PS4 and RAM. This will be big in the long term. PS4 really shapes up to be a redemption console for Sony after PS3 and it's rocky launch. They seem to adressed the flaws, and are not afraid to admit them, like Cerny at the Meeting, and Boyes at the conference when he made a joke about Giant Enemy Crabs :D
Overall props to Boyes, and especially Cerny for the console itself. They have really outdone Microsoft in a impressive fashion on the hardware department.

That's pretty cool that he was willing to share that story. The people Sony has running things now are awesome. Even with Jack Tretton still there, they've mostly managed to change their persona and focus. Cerny and Yoshida are two of my favorite people in the industry and I'm starting to like Boyes, too.

Sounds more like a threat not a request.

I would love to know when that visit and the change of the 4GB to 8GB happened.
