Your approach was good.
You just need to mix in counters.
Mind games riot!
They try to hit you when you approach, mix in a counter or two and they get hit instead of you.
Now they'll be worried when the next counter is going to show.
Also, use your blade dance more....
and use your shield breaker, it's pretty useful.
