The first in what will like be a series of features celebrating good games that didn't get enough celebration upon release. I do take suggestions for any game on any platform, provided that the suggestions follow a few conditions -
1. The game has sold under 500K according to VGC or other souces.
2. The game was either well-recieved but rather ignored upon release, or gained mixed reception but a notable following after release.
3. The game was released before 2007, when the sixth-generation was finally in full swing.
So without futher adieu...

Doom 64 is one of the earliest notable first-person shooters on the N64, released over a month after Turok hit shelves (and stole its thunder). It retains the 2D style and general gameplay of the Doom series, which was the main criticism in IGN's (factually incorrect) review. Doom 64 is a seperate game from Doom, featuring new levels, art assests, sound design, and physics. Easily the best Doom game on consoles at the time, but again, overshadowed by more technically advanced games which, by the way, did not age nearly as well.
I think the Happy Video Game Nerd's retrospective does a fantastic job of showing why this game is a true forgotten gem.
