Forums - Nintendo - Forgotten Gems - Doom 64

The first in what will like be a series of features celebrating good games that didn't get enough celebration upon release. I do take suggestions for any game on any platform, provided that the suggestions follow a few conditions -

1. The game has sold under 500K according to VGC or other souces.
2. The game was either well-recieved but rather ignored upon release, or gained mixed reception but a notable following after release.
3. The game was released before 2007, when the sixth-generation was finally in full swing.

So without futher adieu...

Doom 64 is one of the earliest notable first-person shooters on the N64, released over a month after Turok hit shelves (and stole its thunder). It retains the 2D style and general gameplay of the Doom series, which was the main criticism in IGN's (factually incorrect) review. Doom 64 is a seperate game from Doom, featuring new levels, art assests, sound design, and physics. Easily the best Doom game on consoles at the time, but again, overshadowed by more technically advanced games which, by the way, did not age nearly as well.

I think the Happy Video Game Nerd's retrospective does a fantastic job of showing why this game is a true forgotten gem.

I don't know how much this game sold, but it wasn't nearly to the equivalent of it's awesomeness.

Forgotten sales numbers, I suppose, are a sign of forgotten quality.

I want to say I played Doom 64 at someone's house at one point, but truth is I usually stuck with renting the games with multiplayer like Duke Nukem 64 or Hexen. I didn't even play the first Turok game, although 2 and 3 were interesting experiences/

i beat Doom64.. quite an accomplishment imo. I'll never forget that intro. Pure magic.

In this case, absolutely.

Doom 64 was a great game. The happy video game nerd is right. This game is still a joy to play. A lot of 6th gen games are not good on the eyes nowadays and that makes it hard to play. May play this today.
